Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

What is his record though ? 3 assists ? What has he proven, mostly when I watch him, he's much more of the destroyer than the unlocker... He does though provide that through ball from time to time...

Modric though is the player that keeps Spurs ticking, links up their defense to attacks with his great passing... Not Scholes like, but his ability in the final third when he drags 2 players to him and makes the pass to find another team mate is what I like about him... His ability on the ball and his dribbling sense is a bit better, not by much but I've seen more of Modric attacking and infront of the penalty box compared to Ever...

8 assists 2 goals last season

He created more goals for Valencia than any of his team mates, including Silva. Not really something you can say about "destroyers" and something you cannot say about Modric. VDV is the player who creates for Spurs and he got 7 assists in la liga last season.

Weird I can now post in this thread again.

Transfer fee wise he'd be a nightmare but he'd be an immense signing for us. The assists/goals argument doesnt apply with him imo

It does but it isnt everything. In a central midfielder you would ask for both, brilliant general play and as much productivity as other top central midfielders.

There are other midfielders who do just as much in general play (offensive and defensive) but produce more often. Thats where he needs to improve

He's a good player no doubt. But I don't think he will be a vast improvement. We can develop Anderson into a player who suits our style more. The media are overhyping Modric a fair bit. No way would I pay 20+ for him.

Delusion in this thread among those who think Modric wouldn't add much to our midfield. He's at the very least a step up from everything we've got bar Scholes at his best, and while I'd love to see Anderson reach the level I just don't see it happening. Too inconsistent and injury prone.

Would break the bank for Modric, as I think he'd become an essential part of our midfield for the next five years, at least. It'll be interesting to see what happens if Spurs don't get a CL spot, but if they do I don't think he's within our reach.

He's gone cold again this season. Don't think he is of that higher grade that we will need. Very talent though.

Yeah, cos ability-wise he just towers over Scholes, Carrick, Fletcher or Giggs, doesn't he?

'Walk' was the wrong word there.

Modric would walk into our current midfield if he was playing anything like he has this season. He's a better player than any midfielder we currently have, bar Scholes who is aging, and could also play in a 4-4-2.

Doubt Harry would sell after his talk the other say. Saying he could win the league in the next 5 years if he brought in a couple of Modrics. If that's what he says he needs then I doubt he'd sell the only Modric he has.

I doubt there'll be any sale full stop or that any sale was ever a possibility.

 In five years time, Harry will have managed three more teams and got a gig with Skysports

Getting pretty sick of "the media are overhyping him" argument to be fair.

Think people have made there own minds up about him by now.

I think Adam is actually a realistic target. He won't cost a fortune, there is a fairly good chance that Blackpool will go down this season, Ferguson seems to like him and we have a good relationship with Holloway who praises us all the time. I think he is the most realistic target among midfielders at something like £10m.

He's not good enough to warrant interfering with Anderson's progress, or even Gibson's.

He's better than Gibson mate. Same bad qualities kind of but a way better set pieces taker. He'd be the best one by miles here.

Miles better than Gibson at the moment. And I doubt he'd stunt Anderson's development considering neither Carrick or Fletcher or Gibson are/have.

He's got two more seasons of full playing time under his belt than Gibson, I'm just saying Adam is too ordinary to buy instead of just playing the two young players we have; more regularly.

Carrick and Fletcher are not in direct competition with Anderson though, Adam shares similar attributes (and flaws), so I'd rather we gave Anderson more game time than by a middle of the road player for the same position.

Nah he hasnt, but he's only just got his form back since just before christmas when he was really good in Argentina's win over Spain. Since then he's always had a big effect for Valencia

The argument exists because he doesnt produce enough. If he goes and scores a couple and creates a few more in big matches, the argument dissappears.

Problem is thats exactly whats not happening

Not sure who you've been watching. He's been fantastic for Spurs over the last couple of years at least. He's the heartbeat of the team, rarely gives the ball away and allows the likes of Van Der Vaart to get forward.

As said above he'd walk into United's midfield and I reckon there'd be a few clubs in for him if he were available.

Its all well and good taking about Anderson "developing" into a top player but there's no guarantee it'll happen. He needs to keep injury free to have any chance.

The problem is for clubs is that it is very difficult not to sell when players hand in transfer requests and make it clear they don't want to be there, If clubs the size of Man United move in for him then there is every chance he will do this.

He is actually a tidy midfield far better than anyone we got.

Spurs didn’t want to sell Berba, people forget the player pretty much went on strike to get his transfer.

If Modric wants to join United (or anyone else for that matter) he could play the cnut card and push a transfer through. And once the cnut card has been played, the transfer value usually drops.

I think United could sign Modric, but a lot would depend on Modric.

That's only if you equate 'produce' with a few mostly meaningless stats and ignore a reading of any game Spurs have played this season.

Assist and goals aren't necessarily the be all and end all of a centre mid.

For a player like Lampard they should be - his Chelsea career has effectively operated in a system where his midfield ole has been covered by two exceptionally talented defensive midfield players. Lampard's only job is to put goals and assists on the board.

A player like Modric shouldn't be judged on just goals.

Personally Modric wouldn’t be my number 1 target. Given my preference for 4-3-3 and the current crop of midfielders we have in our squad I’d (in a utopian environment) much prefer a player like Pastore.

What is it with some of you lot and Modric? Do i detect the disdainfully upturned nostrils of elite club snobbery? It would seem that if a player doesn't play for Utd then there is sufficent justification for unreasonably diminishing his performances or contributions in some form or another.

Imo Modric is one of the best and most consistent midfielders in the EPL. His passing, mobility, workrate, consistency, the imagination and variety in his play, in fact his whole attitude surely cannot be so flippantly dismissed. He has been performing brilliantly for Spurs, both at home and in the CL. What more can he possibly do?

Anderson is a perfect contrasting example, really. This is a player who has gone backwards since his very first season. He has had persistent problems with both his attitude and fitness levels, been criticised for his actions and behaviour off the pitch and continually struggles for both form and consistency. Yet despite these problems most of which can probably be reasonably attributed to his poor attitude, because he currently plays for Utd he is somehow deemed a better hypothetical future option than Modric who has been playing out of his skin (albeit for Spuds) for the last 18 months.

This does not mean i am advocating getting rid of Anderson, merely making a comparison in the differing attitudes and the subsequent form of the 2 players and ultimately how illogically and unreasonably they are being judged by some Utd fans.

How anybody can look at the manner of the majority of our performances this season and not believe that Modric would significantly improve our midfield is completely and utterly beyond me.

Overrated! Charlie Adams has played better against us and he doesn't have anywhere near the quality around him! There you go.

That's right, let's sign a player because he's had a good game against United!

:wenger:

Caf logic

Superb post mate. Far more superior player to Anderson, Gibson and Fletcher. There I said it.

You're perhaps forgetting that Modric's contract runs until 2016 and that he signed a new, 6 year contract only last summer.

This alone makes his situation very different from that of Berbatov's at the time.

That is absolutely bang on the money.

Being 3 years older helps. And where is this poor attitude comes from? All SAF have said about Anderson is that he has a good attitude and always have a smile on his face.

Im not sure of Berbatov's contract at the time of joining United, but IMO only when a player enters the final year of his contract does the landscape change from the selling clubs perspective. They might want to cash in, even if a player is behaving himself.

The difference between a 2 year contract and a 6 year contract matters little if a player wants to leave and is bringing nothing but negatives into his current club. You could argue having him on a longer contract presents bigger issues.

That means nothing.

A new contract is important for the players pocket and for the club (Maybe a clause, for example Modric can leave the club for 30m).

No CL football next season for Modric/Spurs and a big club comes in for him then everything is possible, CL football is so important for the players.
For example Robben has said last week that he will maybe leave Bayern Munich without CL football 2011-2012.

It doesnt if he says he isnt going to play Spurs anymore, much like what sealed Berbatov's move

Bizarrely Modric seems to be completely underrated, and the hype that is Bale well overrated. Watch a few Spurs games.

Where VDV will be the one with cutting edge

Nobody is denying that Modric is very good with his general play and moving the ball around. But he doesnt do enough defensively to be the holding player of a pair, and he doesnt do much to affect the scoreline which leaves him short as the attacker of the pair.

What he can do is what current, not-much-legs Scholes can do and play the ball around well and we do still need Scholes playing because it makes a big difference. But the top midfielders give you more than that and if you're paying £30 million or so for him, he better be a top midfielder.
