Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Its kinda bizarre we haven't made a bid for Modric, makes you wonder that chelsea and Utd may have come to an understanding that they didn't bid for Sneider and we would keep out of the way on Modric.

A bit far fetched but plausible..

It will end up with a transfer request.

That will be the very last resort.

"I want to remain friends" = I don't want to lose my signing on fee by asking for a transfer.

I think a much more plausible explanation would be that we've already made enquiries and discovered that a) Chelsea are also interested and b) he doesn't want to leave London.

Glaston:
It's kind of hard to "unsettle" a player who is happy at Spurs and signed a 6 year contract to prove it. Regardless of what Modric would choose IF he were a free agent, the fact is that he isn't a free agent and it's very very unlikely that's he's going to cut up rough at the prospect of staying for at least another year.

You are all absolutely barking mad if you truly believe that Levy is going to sell him just 1 year into that contract and when he's THE key player at Spurs.

In May, Modric spoke to the Daily Mail:
He signed a contract last year that runs until 2016. It’s long, but not as long as the 10-year contract he signed at Dinamo Zagreb.
‘A lot of people asked me why I did that,’ he says ‘They couldn’t believe it. But the club came to me and offered the 10 years and I thought, “Yeah, why not?” I love the club, so I signed. I spoke with my family and my agent beforehand and I knew I would not stay for 10 years.

‘But I wanted to sign it to show I was not looking to leave, while at the same time giving them some protection when it eventually came to me leaving. That was the biggest reason I signed it, because it was best for the club.

History repeating itself? :)

I'm sure we have most likely asked about him and been turned away with a high figure or just a plain no, and given our relationship with Levy over the Berbatov saga, i'm sure we wouldn't want to be pushing anymore buttons of a persons who very quick to cry foul everytime one of his players is approached.

How ever given Modrics recent quotes, i'm sure we'll be working at getting a bid going and a package that would encourage Modric to up sticks to Manchester.

The benefit we have over Chelsea at the moment, is the fact they are managerless. If we move quick, and Sir Alex decides to personally get involved and meet with the player then things could swing in our favour. I have no doubt that if we truely wanted him, Sir Alex would be in his ear, like he has done so many times in the past to swing players decisions.

Then again, our "interest" in him could be just paper talk and we're infact after somebody else?

The interesting part is about him having an agreement(probably verbal) a year earlier with Levi that they'll let him go if Chelsea comes back with an offer.

Ronaldo had the same with Fegie, Carvalho did with Chelsea a year before he was allowed to join Real. I'd imagine it happens a whole lot more than people think. If Modric indeed was given assurances of such nature and Spurs now tell him to shut up and stay put, he won't be happy.

Did he specifically mention Chelsea?

This just came up on Sky's Transfer Clockwatch.

"In respect of Luka Modric, we are not prepared to sell, at any price, to Chelsea Football Club or any other club."

-Daniel Levy, Chairman Tottenham Hotspur

Just read on twitter that SAF is bitterly disappointed on missing out on Modric, has any links been posted for this this morning or is it Twitter bullshit?

Yes he said he wanted to go to Chelsea - it's a great club he said. Wants to stay in London, only a 2 hour flight to Croatia.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has reacted to Luka Modric's desire to leave White Hart Lane with the following statement: "In respect of Luka Modric, we are not prepared to sell, at any price, to Chelsea Football Club or any other club." Full story to follow shortly.

He'll be at Chelsea Hockey Club before you know it

Breaking news on their TV channel now. Come on Spurs stay firm.... unless we come in with an offer :smirk:

New Levy statement circulating.

"No key players for sale."

The man's a tit.

Wish Fergie would get back from France. In fact wish he would do his transfer business BEFORE going off on holiday every year.

I don't get why we haven't made a bid for him either (if we are truly interested) I suppose we are probably waiting for a decision on Sanchez.. I think if Sanchez decides to join united we are a few attacking players too heavy.. In which case we would have to get rid of at least 1.. My money would be on Berbatov being that one player.. He is in his last year of contract (with an option to extend by another year) and he is 30 now.. If we are to move him on.. Now would be the time.. He was the joint top scorer in the PL and this will be known my many clubs that may be interested.. One of the clubs that may be interested are Spurs.. So depending on whether we get Sanchez or not we could then bid for Modric with or without Berba in the deal.. Yes I know this is a far stretched theory.. But I just wanted to share it..

"I wish to make it absolutely clear, as I have said previously, that none of our key players will be sold this summer. We are building a team for the future to consistently play at the highest level and retaining quality players is crucial to that.

"In respect of Luka Modric, we are not prepared to sell, at any price, to Chelsea Football Club or any other club.

"We made our stance on this issue abundantly clear in writing to Chelsea. They chose to ignore it and then subsequently made the offer public.

"For the avoidance of any doubt, let me reiterate that we shall not enter into any negotiations whatsoever, with any Club, regarding Luka.

"We now consider this matter closed."

I would think the reason why we haven't made a bid for Modric is either

a) We're not interested in him.

b) We were aware of his desire to join Chelsea.

Why?

Seems like a very sensible statement to put out by Levy.

Modric has said he won't ask for transfer so now Chelsea have to offer silly money or Spurs keep their best players and can try and build a team, surely what they really need to do.

My personal feeling on the transfers is that Sneijder is our 1st choice central midfield player, but SAF also wants Sanchez. I believe that should we sign Sanchez then Nani will be used in a deal to buy Sneijder. This gives more balance to the situation and the team.

Sneijder should be first choice over a player like Modric because he addresses the issue we've had for several seasons now, the lack of goals from midfield. This would indicate why we were intersted in Nasri also. I think Modrics lack of goals is what makes him not worth 40-50m.

I don't anybody on here would complain if we signed Sanchez and Sneijder. I believe that is the plan. I'm not so sure we'll get either though.

He will ask for one eventually, if things don't go to his liking.

It's not sensible though is it, he's setting himself up for a fall. He's drawing extra attention to it which just alerts other clubs.

It's all just rhetoric.

Modrics quotes from his interview, says he had an agreement with Levy, upon signing the new contract, that if any bids would come in then Spurs would consider them.

Now that Levy appears to gone back on his word, but publicly stating that they will not entertain any offers for Modric, Modric could react by doing the same and handing in a request.

It also means that Modric would have to force his way out, thus reflecting better on Spurs as a club.

In which case, Modric would cost himself millions of pounds in loyalty bonus, and he's made to look like the enemy.
