Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Yes he said he wanted to go to Chelsea - it's a great club he said. Wants to stay in London, only a 2 hour flight to Croatia.

You do realise antihenry is talking about a verbal agreement with Levy when he signed a contract last year. Not the fresh quotes.

In which case, Modric would cost himself millions of pounds in loyalty bonus, and he's made to look like the enemy.

Surely that's the idea. Spurs/Levy would come out of the situation with their reputations intact with the more simple minded.

A newbie (roonster09) just sent me this.

"I wish to make it absolutely clear, as I have said previously, that none of our key players will be sold this summer. We are building a team for the future to consistently play at the highest level and retaining quality players is crucial to that.

"In respect of Luka Modric, we are not prepared to sell, at any price, to Chelsea Football Club or any other club.

"We made our stance on this issue abundantly clear in writing to Chelsea. They chose to ignore it and then subsequently made the offer public.

"For the avoidance of any doubt, let me reiterate that we shall not enter into any negotiations whatsoever, with any Club, regarding Luka.

"We now consider this matter closed."

Statement by Club Chairman, Daniel Levy - News Articles - Tottenhamhotspur.com

I look forward to seeing those quotes in Mediawatch after Modric joins Chelski.

If Levy is really interested in keeping the player he can offer similar terms to what Chelsea are prepared to give. Everything else is posturing to the inevitable.

Modric accepted a contract extension, like what, last year? Why should Levy offer Modric similar terms now?

he said the same about Berbatov. Not for sale.

He'll be in blue next season.

Levy back in 2008 regarding Keane and Berbatov.

"I have absolutely no wish to sell either player and to date we have not accepted any offer for either. However, when a player's head is turned and their commitment is absent, particularly when they occupy key positions such as that of striker, they become a negative influence in a team dressing room in which they were once a positive addition and influence. This is the situation we now have on our hands, with both Dimitar and Robbie having made it clear that they wish to leave for Manchester Utd and Liverpool respectively.

I still think Modric is on his way out even with Levy's recent comments.

I always wonder about the intelligence of these players who sign new long term deals then start itching for a move a season after. They don't get it puts them totally at the mercy of their club. Regardless of whether they went on strike or handed in a transfer request.

Players mostly get what they want despite having signed a long contract, so why not? A longer contract gives players security they want, just in case they turn rubbish, or have consistent injuries.

Woodgate, Hargreaves, and Owen at Newcastle are good examples of why it benefits players to be on long contracts.

Yep, win-win.

Levy's just playing the game. He wants Modric to formally ask for a transfer to make the club, and him, look stronger and to let all the ire of the fans be directed at the player when he's inevitably sold.

I wonder is Spurs will feck it up and let it rumble on and on and destabilise the club over the summer and end up leaving it to late to sign a replacement.

But if like Fabregas ad Modric you want to move soon, why pen a deal for 5 -7 years? I simply put your club is a position in which they don't have to sell you except for exhorbitant fees, which makes it harder for you to move. Or if you turn to shit Julen Gurero style, you are stuck at the club unable to move else where to revive your fortunes.

A deal of 3 years would make more sense.

Maybe Modric got assurances from Levy and Spurs that he'd be allowed to leave if he signed that contract?

Bit late for that...

'Modric is Scum'

Glaston is right that Levy won't sell Modric this summer.

There are substantial differences between Levy's statement re Keane and Berbatov and his statement about Modric.

Depends on your definition of a 'big club.' Apart from the Mourinho years on, in my lifetime Spurs have always been a bigger club than Chelsea. The annual fixtures against the renties - when they were in the 1st and not the 2nd Division, never elicited as much excitement as the games against Spurs.

It's quite simple really. Chelsea are challenging for major honours every year and have done so for the last 8 years now. They're no flash in the pan and thus justifies their "big club" title.

Just because Spurs have a grander history than Chelsea doesn't make them a bigger or more desirable club than Chelsea to players playing today does it?

Levy would be crazy not to accept £35m for Modric

Thay can live without him easily and Harry will bring in a load of plyers

In all fairness, looking forward to seeing what Glaston posts now. :p
Nothing's changed: Modric will be at Spurs next season. My offer of bets remains open ... beyond the two wagers agree so far.

Modric was their best player in a season where Bale was the best ever ever ever and VDV scored 10+ goals so yes I do think they'll miss him.

The bet offered is that he won't be sold this summer full stop, regardless of which club or whether it's for £1 or £100m.

Not even for a £100m apparently.

 No chance. They'd be getting majorly stung at £40 million

Levy got 30.75 out of us for Berba and Modric has 5 years on his contract and the market is severely inflated right now. I really wouldn't be shocked if he got 40+ for Modric and Chelsea would be desperate enough to pay it as well.

Fair play to you. Stick to your guns

At least you are not as deluded as some Utd fans still thinking he may opt for us instead of Chelsea

Can anyone confirm whether or not Glaston is an honourable person? Is he just going to welch and vanish forever when Modric leaves?

They also got a great fee from us for Carrick. And a huge fee for Robbie Keane to Liverpool.

So maybe he will get £40M for Modric. Doesnt seem too unrealistic a figure.

What disrespect to us. We've been after him for longer than Chelsea have and he wants to go there? How rude

Levy doesn't have offer or do anything. A contract with 5 years yet to run is all the power he needs.
