Luka Modric

Di Maria and Ozil are inconsistent Modric was more reliable. Plus he loves the Alonso-Khedira axis.
That's not true though.

Modric has been a great squad player, don't think he's good enough for a first team spot though.

As someone mentioned above, I too feel he's always been a bit overrated.

He is slightly not massively but goes missing at times. He hasn't had a good big game in Europe that I can remember.

I think it was Brwned that posted his stats a few days ago, they really blew my mind. Ozil may not have the best condition, but his number of assists is staggering.

Modric overrated? I've heard it all now.

He would walk into any PL team's first XI.

Ozil created the most goals in La Liga last season, despite being moved away from his position in the hole for 5 matches and starting less games than Modric, who always played in Ozil's role

Ronaldo credits Ozil for creating most of his goals and its obvious why

Not to mention being a rat-faced twat whose goal knocked us out of Europe.

Knew it wouldn't be long until the Modric-police arrived to tell us all how amazing he is, how he'd walk into any teams midfield, how he's one of the best midfielders in the world etc etc Thats exactly why he's overrated. People talk about him like he's Zidane!

Ronaldo's goal knocked us out of Europe..

I stand corrected, but the rat-faced twat still contributed. Anyway, if he did sign for us, where would he play? I wouldn't pick him ahead of either Shinji or Carrick and I don't think Modric would suit at all as a ball-winning defensive midfielder of the type we need.

No one talks about him like he's zidane though.

Modric's a very good player. Question regarding him is whether he can impose himself on the biggest stage and play a leading role. Time will tell, one season in a new league is little to base stuff on.

I'm basing it on the years he had at Spurs too. I've always said he's a good player. But nowhere near as good as some people on here make out.

For some reason Mourinho played him mostly as AM, Ozil's position, instead of his natural CM position.

That's because Modric and Alonso don't complement eachother, and Alonso is probably their (second) most important player, so he can't drop him.

I know he racks them up at an alarming rate. It doesn't really take away from my point imo in fact for me it highlights it. Someone as talented as him should not go missing as often as he does.

He doesnt. He does his business and is a key reason why Madrid can mount a title challenge

I'm talking Europe mainly most of their league matches are straight forward but he does tend to go missing on occasion imo. Let's the game pass him by.

I think it is unfair to ask Modric to rack up the amount of assists that Ozil has. Ozil is a final third player, he exists solely to break past defences and play the final pass, most of it, of course, to Ronaldo. Modric's natural habitat is in midfield where he can control the play and facilitate possession. Both are very different players.

It's certainly a point of critique that is held against him when he plays for the national team as well. He is not a "big game player" it seems and often enough goes missing when his team would really need him to shine.

I haven't given up hope on him though, he is 24 now and enters the stage of his career I would expect him to show that he can be as good under pressure as he is in the less important games and he will have to make that step in order for our national team to win anything in tournaments or will have to make way for a player who can do it under pressure as well.

He can't afford to keep going like he did so far the competition on his position in our national team is just too good for him to not show his best when it really matters, Götze and Draxler are just waiting for him to stumble.

Isn't it safe to say that Modric would be a significant upgrade from Cleverley?

He'd be a massive upgrade from Cleverley, but my problem and a lot of others problem is whether he's worth spending a massive sum of money on. As I've said, he can have a tendency to get lost in games against bigger teams where he's not given time and space to control the midfield. What we need is a player who can control the game even when a high pressure system is effectively used by the opposition. For £15m for example I'd take him, but for £30m which people were often talking about last year, I'm not so sure. Very good midfielder who's good on the ball but he is overrated.

Id assume hell play next to Carrick as a CM! They'd compliment each other well IMO. It's more Cleverley & Anderson's spots under threat as opposed to Carrick/Shinji.

I do believe we need a back up for Carrick anyway though.

I think you're right, but I can't see Modric wanting to play the role of Carrick's understudy.

He won't bud  as Modric is not a DM!

He's more of a CM or even a box to box CM, dictating the tempo and keeping the ball. So there's not a chance in hell well buy him to be anything other than Carricks partner.

Well, what do we think? I'd be well up for getting Modric in, and think he'd be class beside Carrick.

I'd take him. Still an excellent player.

I thought he realy started to play well for Madrid last season, would be suprised if they sold him.

I bet Fergie is fuming over Man United being linked with all these midfielders.

Would be very happy if we got him, though he's not that young is he? 28 or 29 I think. Would improve us massively anyway.

Real Madrid do ruin a lot of players but he's still a top class player at a good age who would slot in seamlessly next to Carrick. Would prefer Cesc as he offers more of a goal threat and is a bit more box to box. Either would be great signings.

Always thought he'd do a good job here. Far better than Cabaye anyway...

Most definitely. I cringe anytime that Cabaye thread gets bumped.

Modric is still an excellent player and his performances in the second half of the season for Madrid showed as-much. Some people on here decided that he was shite when he went to Madrid, for some bizarre reason.

Supposedly some journo called Di Marzio or something has said we have made a bid. Apparently very reliable.

Yup, his article doesn't say much though http://www.gianlucadimarzio.com/calciomercato/manchester-united-contatti-col-real-per-modric/

So with rumours that Vidal will go to Madrid increasing, could this guy be up for grabs?

If the Fabregas bid fails, I'd love to have this guy here. PL proven, and will be a fine player to have in midfield for us. A big improvement.
