Luka Modric

Looks like he's out for a pretty long time. Up to 4 months out according to AS with a hip/upper thigh injury. Huge blown for Real Madrid - guess that means Illarra or Khedira will finally get minutes, or maybe Isco will play deeper, but I doubt any could come close to replacing him.

Ouch! It's actually crazy how underrated he was at Spurs.

By whom? He was fantastic, SAF actually said he thought he'd been the best PL player one season. He was the player I really dreamt we'd go all in for. :( One of the players I enjoy the most watching, so elegant on the ball.

Sad news about his injury.

To be fair, he wasn't as good as he could have been at Spurs, despite being very very good and at times, excellent. I remember watching him for Croatia against England and he just looked destined to be a top player right there. Being in a dominant side with great technical quality has really elevated him.

I know many fans were not particularly bothered by him signing for Real Madrid unlike Bale. He was rated but I don't think fans in the PL properly appreciated him. A bit similar to Alonso I'd say.

Bad news for Madrid. But he should be ready for Croatia vs Norway, that's all I care for tbh.
Luckily we had wee Mateo on the bench to substitute him although of course you cant just substitute a player of Modrić calibre.

Well this international break has been a pain in the ass not only for United but for so many other teams. Injuries everywhere.

Would prefer to keep developing Clev and Ando.

I'd completely forgotten people thought this...hard to believe he went from being Madrid's whipping boy to the best midfielder in the world in just 18 months. Such a graceful player but at the same time a tireless worker.

I'm with you, but there were plenty on here (almost a majority, at times) who hilariously underrated him. Of course, you won't see them owning up to it now...

Don't get me wrong, I'd welcome him here and he's a very good footballer, I'm just not convinced that in the long run he'd be better than either Ando or Cleverley once they hit their peaks.

This is roughly my stance too. I rate Modric higher than a lot on here seem to, but I also think in a settled system Anderson and Cleverley are both much better than people give them credit for, and Modric would only be that awkward half-step better than either at the moment, and could well be outstripped by them in a season or so.

If we buy someone, and we still should, it needs to either be back-up for Carrick or a world-beater who'll comfortably oust Ando/Cleverley. No point benching them for someone like Modric.

Can we get some Scholesy Modric quotes in here? He deserves to be vindicated.

Here it is:

Modric is the more clever player and the better passer. The more creative mind. Anderson is Nicky Butt with dreadlocks.

Someone call Woodward so Scholesy can be hired as scout.

 Fair play. Although you'll note the other post where I say that I'd like us to sign him - that (admittedly now daft-looking) comparison was not about me not-rating Modric, is what about how very highly I rated Cleverley back in the day. Which is no secret.

There were plenty in that thread arguing that he was simply mediocre.

I was always a big Modric fan im pleased to say. Wanted him when he was at Spurs about 4-5 years ago.

I think people can be excused for under-rating him back when he was still at Spurs. I know I did. If only because I enjoyed winding up @Scholesey

Can't understand why anyone wouldn't have realised he was a terrific player long before the start of this thread though. Was one of the best CMs in the PL in his final couple of seasons. Clearly head and shoulders above anyone we had in our squad at the time.
