That and the shitshow our fans created for that first half of the season about not "backing the manager" by refusing to sanction the signing of Harry fecking Maguire.
I quite like that his first priority when coming on to see a game out isn't to get the back line organised or make sure players are focused, but to wrestle the armband off of Bruno, and adjust it so it's sitting on his arm just right so there's no mistaking who Captain Fantastic is.

Gary Neville saying in TV 'who is Woodward to veto a manger of calibre of Mourinho?' gave ammunition to manager-worshippers to moan for a year, which made the club change their policy of that football board (the two chief scouts and someone else) vetoing the manager's signing. Which then resulted with us getting the likes of Maguire and AWB.
The policy was the correct one, Neville was spouting his usual nonsense, fans being cultists, Mourinho being a bitch, and Ed being a moron to reverse it.
Maguire and Henderson must be on the list for guaranteed leavers this summer.

The fans supported the manager, yes. But is was very much the managers shitstorm. The fans weren't the ones spouting constant shite in press conferences and setting the team up to fail, at which point the fans pretty quickly began to turn.
In reality though it wasn't unreasonable to expect the football club to bring in a centre half, which we badly needed, after we had finished 2nd in the league and only added Fred and Dalot (who at that stage had only played about 10 first time games iirc).
And frankly, had we signed Maguire that summer for the reported £50m instead of the world record £80m the following summer, it would likely be looked back on rather differently.

If we were able to get 30m+ for him, 20-25m for Henderson and say 30ish for McT we'd be in a very good space for a CM + CB
The reported amount was 70-75M that summer. I do not think it would have changed much, Maguire just isn't that good and has a very fragile mentality.
I think he will ask to leave by himself. He's 5th choice center back behind Varane, Martinez, Lindelof and even Luke Shaw.

I would like to see him in Italy where the tempo is slower to see how he does, but I suppose that with the next Euro 2024 coming, he would like to stay in England.

I was under the impression the links were generally £50-55m. Looking back it was a classic Mourinho shitstorm situation where he told the board one thing and the world a very different thing. Look I'm not saying he's good enough and he should move on but I think a lot of that fragility has come from being essentially a walking meme due to being the most expensive defender in the world. Had he not had that tag things likely would have been different.
I don't think 20 million would be good honestly. A championship defender would probaby go for that, not an England starter. We need at least 30 million out of this for FFP and for logical reasons, we shouldn't be giving people away.
Well it would actually, as there's two effects of selling him; 1. improve our cash position (to re-invest in the squad, e.g. up-front payments for new signings subject to negotiations), and 2. it frees up room to maneuver within the 'FFP-constraints', i.e. eliminating the £13m yearly amortization (26m/2years remaining of his contract) for Maguire could allow us to spend e.g. £65m on a new player on a 5-year contract (65m/5y = 13m p.y.) on the same wages and still be status-quo with regards to FFP.
I understand, but in the contrary if you're the buyer, would you put more than 25 for a defender that is laughed by the entire Europe and would put an extra eye on your team ?
It's a bet to put 30M for the 5th defender of Manchester United too.
If they think he's laughable they won't put any amount of money down. The buyer obviously has to believe in him as a player within their system. Same as any player. It won't be based on memes or social media.
I just don't think we can give away players like this. It sets a really bad impression in the market.

I think you are getting confused. The article you linked is from a month before we signed Maguire, not the previous season when Mourinho wanted him.
Basically the timeline was that at the end of 17/18 Mourinho wanted to sign another central defender. We were linked to a whole bunch (Dier, Alderweireld, etc) , but Maguire was probably the one that seemed to be his first choice but was also going to be the most expensive. All the reports were saying that Leicester were demanding about 70m. Obviously we didn't sign any, and Mourinho went on to throw his toys out of the pram and ultimately got himself sacked. Maguire ended up signing a new contract at Leicester in the early days of this season, obviously getting a wage increase.
The following season (now with Ole) we went back to Leicester and offered the 70m that they'd wanted 12 months earlier and they then demanded more, with many reports saying they wanted 90m. We finally signed him for 80m.
I'd go along with that. Like a lot of these failed signings, he was highly rated at the time, but the price tag means he's been under intense scrutiny and rather than meet the high expectations he's been burdened by them.
The fact that ETH consistently uses Lindelöf or Shaw as 3rd or 4th choice means, you would assume, that he's been told he's not in his plans. Unless ETH has made a decision to take him out of the firing line for the rest of the season.
I guess it depends on whether there is a willing buyer and at what price the club are prepared to sell. The discussion about that I find a bit pointless - it's up to the club - except to the extent it affects who we can recruit and FFP.

I rekcon Emery has bigger plans than Maguire. As for the fee United will get. Maguire is 30 years old, his next contract will likely be his last. He is currently on 190k a week and its unlikely he will take a massive cut given he still has two years to run. WIth no resavle value, its all dead money to the buy club. The transfer fee and wages will never be able to be recouped from a sale. This is why talk of 30-40m is unrealistic. When was the last time a team outside the top 6 paid this much money for a 30 year old?
