I've still yet to see a credible story about another club with concrete interest in Maguire - its all journalists speculatively putting 2+2 together and getting West Ham, etc - and the rumors of United wanting 40m for him are a laugh.
If he stays its probably not due to him wanting to fight for his place and more likely because there aren't any offers for him high enough that it makes sense for United to sell from an FFP perspective. If you assume a buying club won't pay him for than 100k per week then Maguire probably needs something like a 10m payoff from United to rip up his current two year 200k per week deal and sign a new one elsewhere. Giving up on loyalty bonuses will also be a factor. But if it costs United 10m to Maguire to sell him plus two years of 13m fee amortization will accelerate, then you're looking at something like 36m ffp figure for this year plus whatever it costs to sign a replacement. That is compared to an estimated 23m that it will cost to keep him.
I don't really understand United's FFP situation but if things are at all tight then this deal just doesn't make sense unless United can get a stupidly high fee from another club, like 30m-40m. But nobody is going to pay that for a 30-year-old defender with a lot of baggage and high wages, not in a world where you can get a similarly aged Conor Coady for 5m, Dan Burn for 11m, not to mention top young defenders from the continent like Botman or Aguerd for 25-30m.

Us selling him isn’t helped by the fact Southgate ALWAYS picks him. It doesn’t matter if Maguire‘s right foot had dropped off due to leprosy, Southgate just defaults to him whatever.

It will be a disaster for him if he stays. I don't hate him or anything, but he' clearly not good enough for the style ETH wants to play. He's worn out his welcome & couldn't solidify his starting spot last year; he won't miraculously change his game to become a top ball playing CB. He'll be £180k/wk 4th choice CB who will also likely lose his captain status.
Southgate ain’t dropping him
The fact that he has a contract makes it his choice. I hope he leaves but i doubt it. He receives big wages, he likely has more sponsor opportunities to get even more money as a Manchester United player than as a player of any other Premier League team and he has the prestige of being a Manchester United player. He might consider giving that up for a chance to play at the Euros but Southgate is picking him anyway so why would he go?
It's his paycheck and his ego that are holding him back.
Im quite sure many clubs do want him, but no club can afford or justify the salaries we pay. We effectively hamstring ourselves over and over by giving iffy players the salaries we do. The possible transfer options severely narrow down and he hasn't set the bar at a level that match the salary required for the higher tier clubs that do and can pay in that ballpark to close a deal. Situation effectively forcing a cheap transfer, subsidized salaries or some other bad solution.

He's the most important player to move on for my money, not because he's THAT bad (he'd be decent with renewed confidence in the right system, which we don't want to play). It just sends such a bad message this guy hanging around polishing his captains armband from the bench.

Surely regardless of whether he leaves, he needs to be told he won't have the armband next year. He doesn't start enough.
Surely clubs want to sign England's best centre back though. Not sure how that can hurt us. If he literally wasn't playing at all surely there would be zero interest
Yeah, but what do we gain then? Getting him off the payroll and getting a transfer fee are the main benefits of getting rid of him - if we were to pay out his contract, we might as well keep him around.
For all his faults, he is quite professional and doesn't cause trouble, when not playing.
Two reasons, apart from his performances, that he will be hard to sell. 1) His wages 2) He could be in Jail in Greece come next February.
He does though, it’s clear no one in the squad likes him or respects him. Whenever he tries to assert himself as the captain he gets shit thrown right back at him. His wages are an issue for the rest of the squad who are on less and actually play also, and it clears the air for a new captain to be themselves without seeing him sitting in the corner of the room as United’s official captain that never plays.
Let’s face it, we could replace him quite easily with a PL level CB. Not an elite one of course, but solid back up. There’s got to be one player in the bottom half of the table who could do it, we signed Smalling from Fulham and he turned out decent.
I really, really want Maguire to go, but I think ego is harsh, I think he has a desire to fight and prove himself, but I don't think I would ever class him as egotistical, he has not been mouthing off everywhere, or even been disruptive within the team, he has just got on with it, has played when he has been asked, not thrown a sulk, he maybe needs to wake up and smell the coffee but credit where it it due
Ego doesn’t refer to being egotistical, what you’re describing is his literal ego. His sense of pride won’t let him leave or his self belief won’t let him leave. That’s his ego.
Well, that might be true to an extent. I don't think we saw a lot of issues during this season, so I'm not sure it would be worth it to just buy out his contract. We could also offer him to other clubs on a symbolic fee, or pay a share of his wages after a move. There must be a way to get rid of him and get some kind of financial benefit as well.
I mean that he sees his own level being that of a Manchester United captain, which it clearly isn't. He refuses to admit it. Moving to West Ham or similar, would be an admittance that he couldn't do it here.

But ETH has also made it clear that he is fifth choice, behind Varane, Martinez, Lindelof and Shaw at CB. I agree that he hasn't been disruptive, but it is poor from him to not just move on, or at least offer to give the captaincy away.
At the very least we can get a loan for him paying his full salary and small loan fees. This is the worst case scenario.

You'd hope so. It's just a bit messier squad-dynamics-wise than getting shot of him is all.

I'm not just saying this because I want him to leave, but for the sake of his own career and earning power it would be best for him to go. He needs to think about his next move. He's on good wages here now, but another season barely playing and he will not get anywhere near what he can get now when he's able to leave for free. He would be best to go and sign a 5 year deal with a bit of a salary drop now then be offered a fraction of what he's making on at best a 3 year contract.
Not to mention his saving grace is England which could be in jeopardy. Ten Hag couldn't of made it clear he's not wanted. When Varane and Martinez went down he opted for Lindelof and Shaw instead of our captain. Says it all.

Strip him of the captaincy and shirt number, and drop him to the U23s. If we make it clear that "fight for your place" is not an option, he'll be more likely to leave.
That's a really good strategy, tell every player out there that if you fall out of favor we'll shit on you, that'll do wonders for recruitment

Except he wasn't and isn't, he just doesn't suit the style we want to play, given he's a nailed on starter for England despite not playing much football shows that the standard of English CB's is either seriously poor or he's actually a better player than given credit for

There's a lot of subtle pressure that can be applied even if it's not that extreme. The most public example of it is the RM / Bale saga. So far we haven't even released a comment saying we want him to leave. You can have Gary Neville / other ex-Utd folks to amp up the pressure saying he needs to play or lose his place in the euros and so on.
The club is too nice, we need to get a bit of ruthlessness back into the way we do business.
Stripping the captaincy would be a good start.
