People should be "angry" on Erik, not Harry. If Erik told him that he is not in his plans, he would ask for a transfer. Obviously, Erik told him that if he stays he will be 4th or 5th option. I don't rate Maguire at all but i never looked at him as someone like Jones. Player who would be happy to just collect a paycheck.
Season has 60 games and with one defender (Varane) injury prone and other (Lindelof) just slightly ahead in packing order, i would stay too if i was him. It is better to be backup in United then first team player in West Ham for example.

If you want player out then you must leave him no options.

Unfair on Jones that. He wasnt sat around picking up a pay check in the reserves, his body was wrecked and he couldn't play.

Maguire and De Gea were a toxic combo, both of them lacking in confidence and feeding into each others jitters.

With one of them gone, the other improves. It’s just we rarely (if at all?) saw Maguire with no De Gea last season.

I’d rather we sold him and found someone better, but who is out there and affordable?
 
Better bin this guy, so I don't hear it was De Gea who kept him from showing he was world class.
 
He is going nowhere with the ridiculous wages he is on that he will not get anywhere else. Easy for him to sit tight and laugh all the way to the bank.

if anything a proactive goalkeeper means we’d adopt a much higher line which would make Maguire more of a liability.
 
It’s shame he appears happy to waste another season of not playing much. He’s third choice for right CB, and should be desperate to leave but maybe there’s not much interest.

That’s true, but on the other hand, Maguire’s ability with defensive headers from corners also helped compensate for one of DDG’s biggest weaknesses. So if we have a keeper who is able to command his box, that ability will be less important.

IMO, the toxic combo is/was Maguire and Lindelof. I feel like I’ve lost weeks watching them endlessly pass sideways to each other. If both are still going to be here this season I never want to see them on the pitch together.

I reckon over half the caf were against that transfer, it was so obvious he was nowhere near the level the club thought he was. I’m shocked how bad he’s been but I knew he was an average to good player at best.

In the rare events the caftards are in unison but the club can’t see it, you know we’re doomed. For example we simply cannot buy Pickford.

He's genuinely 6th choice.
 
Just maneuvering for a payoff from the club surely. It must be obvious to him he has no future here.

He's in Southgate's plans so he doesn't need to rush into finding a new club. He can still collect a big wage and just keep himself fit for the internationals. Maybe people will forget his blunders if he only plays for England.

That’s what happens when you’re getting such a high wage. You’re happy sitting on the bench for another season, especially if you know you’re guaranteed a place in the England team which he is. If he has to fight for his place then no doubt he’d want to leave to get game time.

Guy is delusional. He is 30 years old, he is not suddenly going to massively improve to the point where he jumps 2-3 spots in the pecking order. Especially not since he is really lacking pace, and that is major tactical reason for not playing him.

If he truly wanted to help the club, he'd sign with another team, which would clear some salary budget and resolve the captaincy situation (admittedly not a huge deal).

That is actually a very good point. Gives me some hope I guess.
 
I was a sceptic from the day he signed but even I think he’ll look better if being babysat by lucho & with a keeper that will take certain decisions away from him.

I reckon he’ll go very late in the window, just need Everton or West Ham to concede 3 or 4 in a game before the window closes.
 
Also it’s not like Ricardo Carvalho is some sort of bastion of defence. He’s hardly spending a week with Maldini or Baresi.

If he stays, he'll feature in 30+ games, including sub appearances. It's a long season, 4 competitions and injuries happen. He got 31 games last year remember.
 
Damned if you do, damned if you don't...the hate United's 4-5th choice CB gets is bizarre.
 
No one is hating on the guy for training hard. People are frustrated with this whole ‘fight for my place’ shtick, when it’s clearly a lost cause. He is essentially holding back squad development to be an overpaid back-up.

Even if he does improve he'll always be a liability in a high line because of his lack of pace so what's the point?

Ricardo Carvalho was also a brilliant defender in that first Chelsea machine Jose put together. Made Terry look better than he was.
 
I think it'd be foolish on his part to stay. I think theres a lot of teams and systems he'd do well in but Ten Hag's United isn't one of them. Even leaving aside the scrutiny and the non existant confidence theres no future scenario where Maguire is a first team player and Ten Hag isn't looking to replace him next time the window opens.
He'll have some offers this season from good level teams that wont match his wage but might pay it out over a longer contract. Them offers wont be there in 2 years time after sitting on our bench for 3 years, Lingard should be a cautionary tale to others.

He was a seriously good CB. Play style, more importantly, that Maguire could try and realistically emulate.

Scratching my head trying to work out the logic behind your idea here.

I don't see Onana offering any mitigation. He's going to want to give the defenders the ball in risky positions which Harry takes ages to deal with. He's going to suit playing high so he can goalkeep proactively. If anything it could exacerbate the issues and place more scrutiny on HM.
