May be Utd believe Moyes will be able to convince West Ham's board to come back with a better offer for a 30 year old CB with no resale value. In the mean time West Ham probably will explore other option first. West Ham #1 priority is to find a Rice replacement.
 
I am a big detractor of Maguire as a Utd player, however I wonder Maguire and DeGea was a disaster waiting to happen every time, is there reason to think that the dynamic of Maguire and Onana significantly less so?

Maguire has certain qualities as a defender, he also has some flaws, which have been amplified by a lack confidence and form.

I am not for a second suggesting that Maguire is going to suddenly turn around and become a world beater, but with Onana in goal are we more likely to see an England level Maguire, as he is definitely a better player in front of Pickford (and Schmeichel for Leicester before) than he was in front of DeGea.

I would still sell him for a pint and a packet of dry roasted nuts but I cannot see anyone offering that much.

I think this is very wishful thinking. With Onana, we will actually play higher in the pitch, which means that Maguire's weaknesses are going to be further exposed. In many ways, De Gea was Maguire's perfect keeper. Considering that De Gea was glued to the goal, it meant that we had to play deep in the pitch, which plays to Maguire's strength. Considering that De Gea also would not (usually) try risky and short passes but go long, it also meant that for most part Maguire's slow thinking in the ball wasn't getting exposed (we saw what happens when there are dangerous short passes to Maguire in the Sevilla match).

Onana is one of the worst possible keeper for Maguire and he is gonna look worse than he did with De Gea. I think his best bet is to go for some team that plays deep and is quite defensive. If Mourinho was interested, he would look good in Roma. In England, playing for Moyes' team would be good.

Expecting England's Magure is very wishful thinking. England plays very deep in defense, they usually had 2 defensive midfielders (Rice and Phillips or Rice and box-to-box Bellingham), and quite often 3 CBs (including a fast one like Walker). At United, he will just have one CB next to him and usually not that fast (Licha is slow, Varane and Lindelof probably a bit above average speed), and just one defensive midfielder in Casemiro, while probably being 10+ yards higher in the pitch. Also, Pickford is much more similar to De Gea than Onana (who is more similar to Ederson).

On top of that, for all his talk Maguire is not confident on the pitch. His nerves are going to be fried playing in front of Onana. He's the sort who will drop his head quickly after a mistake and a telling off. We've seen it before and that was without a madman goalkeeper yelling at him.

These two posts are everything that needs to be said about the Maguire @ Manchester United situation. 100% agreement.

A confident, good on the ball CB would be a good replacement for Maguire. Sell him while you have takers, even at $25m. What we paid for him was a bad idea, and it won’t be recovered in any form. Gone, poof!

Good post.

Onana is also improvising all the time, which is the antithesis of what Maguire, and his frayed nerves, needs - a keeper that might literally take on a pressing attacker, turn inside and lay off the ball on his available foot expecting his CB to have the skills and smarts to keep the chain going is Maguire’s 2nd worst nightmare; there’s memers slavering in anticipation of those outtakes.
 
Pretty much what I expected it to happen, Maguire is 6th choice now. Next is trying to get young CB either this summer or next.
 
Hopefully this adds pressure on Maguire to sanction a deal away from the club. The minute he decides that it's definitely over, we'll be seeing more offers coming in for him.

If you're talking about as a first choice centre back I 100% agree... However if you're talking 5th choice CB, with Maguire's confidence absolutely shot to bits....I think Evans + £25m is far more beneficial to us.

Evans. Period. Besides which, I think it’s forgotten that neither he nor Maguire would be intended to have anything but a peripheral role. The pecking order was made clear last season; the only question is whether we mess with Shaw in lieu of the LB position.

Probably I'm just disappointed that we seem to go for "easy" solution with this type of signing. Instead of looking forward to build something for the future.

Have to say though, I have soft spot for Evans. It's great to see him at United.

Why does England have CBs lining up to take his spot to play the likes of Malta and Estonia? Also he will be registered no matter what if he ends up saying.

It's a short term deal. I expect us to go for young cb next summer as one of the top priorities. Getting Maguire down the pecking order and hopefully sold is the most positive aspect of this deal. Evans is more than capable to be 4th/5th choice.

I’d assume less so the easy solution than the right one at this moment in time. FFP/budget restrictions, maguire/Bailly still on the books etc.

I’m sure if the cash was there and/or we’ve managed to move more deadwood on, EtH would prefer to sign someone but for now they’re dealing with a lot of uncertainty.
 
If we sign Amrabat it gives us the option of playing Casemiro at CB. He started ahead of Maguire last season in a cup game. He could end up being 7th choice.
