Yeah, many in here talking like they'd walk away from that amount of money without at least negotiating.
Big clubs pay big money for players and they don't work out all the time. Just look at the list of current biggest money transfers. Nothing unusual.
Expecting it not to happen will just have you constantly in a bad mood.

Depends how you look at it - it’s clear now to him that his time at United is done from United perspective. From his perspective he wasn’t expecting or wanting to leave coming back for the new season
I don't know about "standard practice" but it happens all the time, its just rarely reported. It may not be making the player entirely whole but some level of payoff is common in these situations.
Don't believe for a second that players like RVP and Alexis walked out of big United contracts to smaller deals with new clubs in Turkey and Italy without getting payoffs of some sort.
That's true but the wages Maguire is on are so vast that it's slightly different, he's never going to earn that anywhere else and he's got another two years of earning more than 200k a week on his contract.
The figure mentioned that Maguire wants is reportedly 6 million quid, that's about 60 per cent of what he would lose in earnings by going to West Ham apparently.
Surely we can find that compromise
It’s standard practice to get some kind of compensation to meet the difference in pay. The key point here is that United are effectively breaking the contract by choosing to sell him.

His game time was significantly reduced last season itself and it was matter of time before he was removed from Captain's position , it would be naive to believe Maguire wasn't aware where this was all heading .

He’d been an odd bloke if he just wrote off 10m quid. Unlike Rashford and the like who have been stars at big clubs since a young age, Maguire didn’t start making big big money until he moved to United.
At Leicester he was reportedly on 45k /week so it’s not like he’s swimming in riches like some players.
If United want him to leave, and it’s clear they do, and he feels it’s time to move, which it appears he does; a negotiated compromise will be made, where West Ham pay a little more, Maguire loses some future earnings and United pay 12-18 months of lost earnings.
It is fairly standard for a player to be compensated for the remaining time on their contract. Possibly not in full, but certainly a fair chunk.
I'm pretty certain that it's why players so rarely actually hand in transfer requests when they want to move, because doing so can forfeit their compensation.
The wage at the new club is irrelevant.

These type of things are fairly normal when a player is expected to earn less, the only contentious point in these cases is how performance related bonuses are compensated and whether the selling club pays through a severance package or if they accept less money from the buyer who then compensate the player however both sides decided.
I remember a case of a player who was paid the same wage until the end of his current contract and had his "new" salary after it.
It was a huge sticking point for DeJong last summer, Barca were prepared to sell but they wouldn’t give him money owed. Instead they wanted United to pay it and United refused.

Judging from ETH latest press conference I honestly dont think ETH really want him to be sold this summer cause as bad as Maguire has been we need to offload some midfielders, get a new one (like Amrabat), and perhaps another experienced ST first before thinking about signing a new CB. Now we are forced to sign a new CB, not that i mind if we can get Pavard in without getting rinsed by Bayern.
I thought when reading ETH's comments about Maguire this morning that it was possibly linked in some way to the compensation that is trying to be agreed. If he had come out and said outright that he wasn't in the plans at all then it would have given Maguire and his agent all the bargaining power.
With saying that he could stay and fight for his place and he theoretically could win it back and be a regular, if Maguire chooses to leave in the face of that it gives the club the angle to say it's his choice to leave. If it can be shown as his choice to leave, then the club have a lot more leverage to reduce any payment he's looking for.
Will undoubtedly come down to who blinks first. Maguire knows that he's not really got a shot of being a regular starter, so I reckon for his career he'll eventually accept a lower lump sum.
I’m not sure you can go that far. Compensation will only sometimes come in, surely, depending on what is motivating the player. And the stance of the club as well.
The Yes, No, How Much Compensation, is a negotiation like any other. If Maguire actually wants to move and play first team football then he might accept £0 compensation. If he’s not that fussed then it’ll be a compromise. If he just doesn’t want to leave, he could demand full compensation and a pay rise.
No-one could blame him for doing whatever he thinks is best for himself. It’s a short career in terms of earnings but also in terms of opportunities to achieve. Not rotting on the bench would be worth more than money to some players.
That’s why it is crucial for ETH to not include Maguire in the match day squad today. Put Evans or Mengi on the bench, or even Eric Bailly
Yes it is. Legally the club and player are bound by that contract. For whatever reason that United’s name gets dragged into these stories, which creates hysteria even though it is standard practice amongst all players changing clubs with a reduction in wages.
He will probably be in the squad
Essentially the same reason Romano provided last week it's most likely truth given his reliability. Think the media are creating the narrative around Maguire and club when a replacement is deemed necessary.
He is not going to live on the streets. He is getting a 4 year contract worth 5.2m pounds a year with Westham (21m total in 4 years). He is not the first professional in the world to lower his wages a bit to have a better career.
He wouldn't be the first to sit tight and run down his contract. So, he doesn't have to sacrifice anything he doesn't want to.
He's 30. He can't wait around and look for a project.
Conference League aside, the chances of West Ham winning anything are virtually 0. Whereas if he stays at United, he might actually pick up a medal or two as a sub in the next couple of years.
And England probably aren't winning anything as long as France are as strong as they are. Putting all his eggs in that basket would be foolish.
So going by your logic of Maguire making the most out of the limited time he has left in football, it would actually be best for him both financially and professionally to stay put at Old Trafford. Even if it's only as a passenger, he has more to gain than lose compared to moving to West Ham. He'd be taking his cue from Martial.
It's a few million dollars. Guaranteed (contracted as long as Maguire turns up for training, stays professional, and makes himself available for selection)... No matter how wealthy you are, it's still a feck-load of money.
Nobody here is unbiased... and everyone probably falls somewhere on the spectrum wrt the "morality" of Maguire demanding money legally owed to him..
Considering he's an athlete with a short shelf life, and a maximum of 3-4 years of playing time, I personally do not think he's in the wrong for looking out for himself. Clubs are notoriously "disloyal" to players and do not hesitate to sell 'em on. Expecting players to show "loyalty" is a little bit naive IMO.

I think you, and many others, vastly overestimate the importance players generally place on the quality of their career.
As far as Maguire is concerned, he's earning a decent amount at United and that's guaranteed for the remainder of his contract.
West Ham can't match that, so unless United pay the difference, there's no incentive for him to move.
He probably fancies his chances of a similar move when his contract is up anyway, and that'll likely come with a nice signing on bonus too.
Pretty interesting that so many people are able to take the high ground when it's not their contract, their job or their life. Very easy to come out with stuff behind a keyboard with absolutely nothing riding on it while taking a dim view of someone else.

Maybe he's saying that he will concede that the manager and club don't really want him and will move on if the club is inclined towards that, but to do that he doesn't want to take a hit on a contract we put in front of him and both parties signed. If it is the choice between losing out financially or staying, he may be saying he would rather stay. There isn't any real contradiction within that position whatsoever.
Ultimately, don't have a go at him for being reluctant to leave the best contract he'll ever have that all parties were all too happy to place ink on. A compromise is probable, but it's not Harry Maguire that's the bad guy, it's not his fault we paid too much for him both on transfer fee and wages and now we're scrambling to reach an acceptable financial package that sees his departure. It's all very much part of the same balls up made by Woodward and Ole and co. If we didn't pay 80 million we wouldn't be on our arse trying to get a book value, we probably would have been able to justify a more acceptable salary package rather than making him a record signing and having to follow through on that, and ultimately if we'd have scouted better in the first place we'd never even have proceeded. So it's our mess that is being cleaned up, not the players.
