I don't understand either side in this Maguire debacle to be honest. He's not wanted by the club and he must know that, so why you'd suffer the embarrassment of the situation is beyond me, I'd have been looking to do a deal on the £7m. The club should also be embarrassed, they don't want him and need reinforcements for the squad, they too should have been looking to do a deal. It'll probably turn out one side was looking to do a deal and the other side was behaving like a child.
And before anyone says anything, I have left a position for less money when I wasn't happy with the conditions. There are always other opportunities to maximise your earnings when you're doing well and in a better position. Different economies of scale, but ultimately the same effect on my bottom line earnings.

You're right, we shouldn't assume that money is the be all and end all for everyone, we equally shouldn't assume that conditions for happiness are the same for everyone.

You are maybe right, but what are the chances that becoming a meme, losing your place in the team, losing the captaincy, being overlooked for a left back in your position, being mocked by football fans in general but especially your own fans, and even being referenced mockingly in the parliament of a foreign country on a different continent is not embarrassing?
That doesn't really matter. Take Sanchez for example. Obviously quality footballer who was great for Arsenal. For us - terrible buy.
Maguire is also a terrible buy. Worst ever defender? Depends on how it look at it. When you buy someone for a world record fee, plays 1 good season, then he value nosedives and most likely we might have to pay him to let him go, draws 200k per week, coupled with terrible mistakes on the pitch which cost us games and titles (Sevilla), was made captain (pretty much the worst one I've ever seen) - all these things coupled together then it's pretty much right up there.
I've moved to a much smaller organization without any increase in compensation because it was a role I'd wanted to do. I've also been in a situation where I was in a shitty role but the money was excellent, so I hung around in spite of being frustrated. I guess it's a question of what you value more at that point in your career.
If I see it from Maguire's perspective - he knows he is unlikely to feature in the 2026 world-cup, or win the 2024 Euros with England... He's made 50+ appearances for England and won't cross 100. With his talent (or lack thereof), a good season at WestHam is not suddenly going to "revive" his career, or put him on the radar of a big CL team. His best chance of being a part (however small) of a silverware winning team is @ ManUtd in the next 2 years... He's getting paid 30% more @ ManUtd too. There's no real reason for him to move to West Ham beyond "professional pride".
The club on the other hand - probably feels that paying 7m (15 if some reports are to be believed) to Maguire is naive given that the club will have to take a risk on integrating a new unknown footballer (who will be 3rd / 4th choice CB and barely feature) for next two years. At least Maguire is a known devil, and has been quiet and hasn't kicked up a fuss during his time here.
We're not in his shorts. Maybe he's mostly oblivious (or doesn't care ) about outside noise ? Certainly he took a dive in the hierarchy and was stripped of the armband. But he did a job here for two seasons more or less, perhaps he could still at least so far he's concerned.
There's a lot of assumptions about what the pride, aspiration and priorities of players are or should be.
If he has to forfeit payment in order to play elsewhere, he is returning money owed by the clubs balance sheet for the upcoming contract years.

You do not forfeit anything when you transfer, you are choosing not to fulfill the remainder of your contract. The forfeit only happens if you get made redundant/contract termination

You're right, but he has previously discussed in interviews about the feedback he sees on various platforms and how he tries to block it out. He may have a good mindset with regards to ignoring things, but no matter how good you are it sinks in on some level and at some point you are kidding yourself. Judging by the way his performances keep getting worse I'd guess it has some effect, but like you say it is all assumption.
@pawanraj I mostly agree with what you write regarding his career, but it seems he does back himself to be able to do a job for United. For this he must realise that will require minutes on the pitch, which won't happen in all likelihood with United. If he does back himself to that degree why not insist on a release clause with West Ham, go prove he's still got it for a season or two and then let his performances hopefully earn him a late career move to one of the big clubs.
As it stands now all signs point towards a Bogarde, and whether you are money orientated or not that is just pathetic and will torpedo any legacy he ever had. He will become more of a meme.
Maguire didn't choose any of that officially. It's the club that doesn't want to fullfil the remainder of his contract. Maguire says he'll oblige them if they compensate him for his loss of income.

Harry Maguire does not want to leave, the club wants him to leave! He says 'I'm happy to stay but if you give me 7m or 15m (whatever source you believe) of those remaining contract wages I can agree with a transfer'.
That is his point of view right now, it doesn't matter at all if he secretly wants away or hope it gets trough.
He's playing hard ball on that position and it's his right to do so. If the club wants him gone so badly, they need to pay up or maybe there is hope that he lowers his demands if they don't react.

I think the club are playing hard ball on, we give him the payoff then where does it end, all players leaving will demand a payoff if they aren’t wanted. Hopefully it forces Maguires and Southgate’s hand, not playing then no international football so he willing leaves.
I’ve also left a job for one paying 25% less, more so the progression was believed to be better and recruiter for the company said I’d be back earning what I was on at the time within two years, once I found out it wasn’t, I jumped ship within 8 months of living in poverty. Gave me more experience to get a better job after that, same could be said of Maguire, one good season at West Ham and we will come crawling back with 400k a week 5 year contract.
I think he won't run down his contract and he's probably off next year at the latest.
Last year, no extension on the table (you'd imagine !), if slim played minutes surely he'll know there's no place to win back. Will probably be more affordable for smaller PL teams, only one remaining year of wages to bicker about.
Maybe not the optimal result for United financially speaking but apparently there was no middle ground to be found this year (so far).
It's more than the deficit of his loss of earnings between the 2 contracts (Roughly £7m), he apparently wants another£8m due to the fact that if he run his contract down he would be offered a huge signing on bonus apparently. A near 33 old Maguire with little game time in years is going to apparently get £8m signing on bonus? Can't make this stuff up.
Beyond greedy. Utd need to make a stand and put him in his place.
We as a club shouldn't be held ransom by players who are only leaving due to their own underperformance. It would be better to take the financial hit and enforce a policy of only offering X in these situations.

The issue the club have is by making it common knowledge that they won't sign replacements until the incumbents are sold it puts all the power in the hands of those players who know that if they dig in utd will eventually cave as they'll be desperate to get their replacements (who by all accounts have already been sounded out) before the deadline.
I don't buy the west ham moving on story either, that's just more public pressure to get us to cave - they love a drawn out transfer saga as much as we do. Karen's gotta protect her apprentice image after all. Having said all that I expect there will be other interested parties down the line too

Agreed, paying him the difference if you are asking him to move on is fine but he's projecting revenue beyond his contract, madness to me.

We gave him a big contract and he hasn't played well in years. We are trying to find a best case scenario for both parties. So i think its only fair that he gets a partial pay off. I don't think its fair that he get the wages that he would've gotten if he had stayed, cause he ain't staying. And he ain't staying because its not only better for the club, but also better for his career.

The club accepted an offer. The club also have stated they are happy for him to stay, so yes it is his choice
I'd say they're smart enough to brief that they're in for certain players so we would bite.
No, that means he wants to ensure that he is financially recompensed from being asked to exit his current contract ahead of schedule and take a lower wage elsewhere. That doesn't mean he actually wants to leave.
Those who still clamour about workers' rights and all that need to realise that 99% of workers will not get the kind of guaranteed payout (tens of millions) for underperformance. His case is more similar to that of senior executives/directors who fail, bleed the company and still get millions in bonuses and stock options. A bit like Woodward.
