I feel no spite towards Harry Maguire, but I'm glad we didn't just pay him millions to leave. If he wants to warm the bench and jeopardise his England career, he has every right to do so and I don't begrudge him a penny of the contract he signed. If, after failing to reach the required standard at United he has to drop down a level or two to get a game, then I don't see why we subsidise that. He either thinks he can elevate himself from 5th choice centre-back or has abandoned what's left of his career to enjoy the riches of his contract.
Nicely put. He is effectively paying roulette with his future. West Ham was a solid option for him. I'm not so sure there will be that many good options for him in January or next summer once teams have purchased alternatives and Maguire has spent a season on the bench.
It may cost United money in the long run for Maguire, but the alternative would have been setting a terrible precedent where every player we want to move on would expect massive compensation from us.
