I feel no spite towards Harry Maguire, but I'm glad we didn't just pay him millions to leave. If he wants to warm the bench and jeopardise his England career, he has every right to do so and I don't begrudge him a penny of the contract he signed. If, after failing to reach the required standard at United he has to drop down a level or two to get a game, then I don't see why we subsidise that. He either thinks he can elevate himself from 5th choice centre-back or has abandoned what's left of his career to enjoy the riches of his contract.
You take the 30mil, minus the pay off and you have money to spend.
It may not be enough for Pavard or Tobido if the selling clubs wanted the fee upfront, but United could have spread the payments over a few years.
Not that it should be fan driven, but we have a player who everyone knows the fans want rid of. Many resent him for refusing the leave.
Next summer, he will have two years left on his contract. He will be worth much less after spending a year on the bench and he will still want the pay out. Plus, the buying club will offer him an even smaller salary, thus meaning we have to pay more of the salary shortfall.
I also dont begrudge him wanting for money he was promised when signing the contacts.
But from Uniteds perspective, he is a depreciating asset. Every day we are paying for him and he is worth less and less.
He is costing us 10mil a year and by us not agreeing to pay some of that off, we forfeit the 30mil transfer fee.
Better to offload and recoup some of that money than him do a Phil Jones.

I totally get that, but if we pay him off, we're only getting £22m and at that price, we're going to struggle to bring someone in of any quality at all. Maybe everyone is just getting burnt here, but perhaps it will encourage Harry Maguire and his agent to be more realistic when a bid from a mid-to-relegation level team in January.

West Ham was a solid option for him. I'm not so sure there will be that many good options for him in January or next summer once teams have purchased alternatives and Maguire has spent a season on the bench.
It may cost United money in the long run for Maguire, but the alternative would have been setting a terrible precedent where every player we want to move on would expect massive compensation from us.

A is wrong. £3m is the breakeven point for Maguire if we weren't purchasing a replacement. (-£26m book value writedown offset by £10m wage savings + £13m amortization savings)
If we were to sign a replacement for £30m at £100k/week for 5 years, the FFP breakeven point on this year's books would go up to £14m (£3m + £6m replacement transfer fee amortization + £5m replacement wages).
