Is Gaz back yet? Heard during the Porto commentary that Fulham was his last game suspended.

Nothing I would relish more than a reaction like last season when Real battered us and we went to Newcastle and battered them. But I have this nagging feeling that with confidence is so low that we will screw up again.

Gaz is still out isn't he ? Gonna be a loose fit... :D

Nah, I reckon Raouls lineup has more steel in the centre. I feel for Saha but he has to bide his time until we are out of the injury hell.

Sir Alex Ferguson's problems intensified last night when it emerged he may have to play Ryan Giggs at left-back in Sunday's Manchester derby because an injury to Roy Keane has left his defensive resources threadbare.

Keane has been deputising at centre-half and unless he recovers from a hamstring strain Ferguson will have only three defenders available in John O'Shea, Wes Brown and Phil Neville. Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville are suspended and Eric Djemba-Djemba, playing at right-back in training, has joined Quinton Fortune and Mikaël Silvestre on the injured list.

Giggs filled in at left-back when Keane went off against Fulham last week and is the only option apart from the inexperienced Danny Pugh.

If Keano cant make it we are really in a hole

We cant even play 3 at the back because Phil aint a centre back. Dont think it will be a formation likely to be found in any textbook

I cant remember it being this bad since the 98 run in

I'm not convinced that we would get the best out of Ruud in a 4-4-2. He's clearly more comfortable as the lone striker with Scholes behind him. Fletcher played well in the middle and should be rewarded with another chance to play there. Kleberson needs to play if he's fit. He can provide us with some much needed creativity there. He should be hungry after not having played in so long. Same for Ole.

:nervous: Giggs in left back? Do we have any youngster who can step in? Now we miss David May :(

Presumably if mickey almost made it back for the porto game he will be ready for the city game. I want Fletch to play, he had a good game on tuesday, following on from fulham. Heres the team:

--------------Howard--------------
--Phizza----Wes---Mickey--Oshea--
-----------Fletch--Keano------------
--Scholes------Saha--------Giggs--
---------------Ruud---------------

Edit: :o Forgot Keano is available, slot him into the back if mickey dont make it.

--------------Howard-------------

PNeville---Brown---Keane---OShea D

----------------Butt-------------- DM

Solskjaer------Fletcher-------Giggs (A)M

-----------<--Scholes-->--------- AM/F (free role)

---------------Ruud-------------- S

IMO Scholes should not have any defensive role, he is the man that should get the ball when United wants set up an attack, not ruud... this line up should make that possible, IMHO hes best when he's just behind the striker in a free role, supplying Ruud with ammo from all possible angles...

when necessary, you could substitute Scholesy for Saha and play him alongside Ruud and substitute Solskjaer for Kleberson switching Fletcher to the right...i'd prefer him to play CM but i'd still rather have him than Kleberson on the RW....

Switch Giggs and Scholes...I reckon SAF has finally twigged that Scholes is wasted out wide in 4-4-1-1

But if reports that Keano is out are true then Danny Pugh as left back is an option, so Giggs will definitely be needed left midfield. And Ole, earmarked as right winger, surely'll get a start ahead of Kleberson. He's fresh.

Manchester United's surprise exit from the Champions League will remain fresh in the memory as they prepare for the derby clash with City.

Last season this was the game that kick-started United's season as they embarked on a run which took them to the title.

But rather than making their first ever visit to Eastlands desperate to put their championship challenge back on track, their major concern is now surely securing an automatic return to Europe's elite competition.

Sir Alex Ferguson's negligence in failing to strengthen the defence during the transfer window, in the full knowledge that Rio Ferdinand would be out for the season, is becoming more apparent by the game.

And as his side's injury troubles mount the prospect of playing Manchester United does not seem as daunting as it did two months ago.

The purchase of Louis Saha, leading to a change in tactics to a two-pronged attack, has further exposed United's weaknesses at the back and the shaky form of England defender Wes Brown.

Although Brown put in a fine performance against FC Porto on Tuesday; he has been left culpable for a number of goals recently.

While the rash challenge on Fulham's Luis Boa Morte in the FA Cup may not have proved costly in the end, the way he allowed himself to be turned by the same player in the Premiership clash at Loftus Road cost United two valuable points.

That draw left them in third place on goal difference from Chelsea, and nine points adrift of a seemingly invincible Arsenal side with only 11 games remaining.

Mikael Silvestre is out for a further three weeks after picking up a knock on his ankle when blocking a shot in a practice match at the beginning of the week. Eric Djemba-Djemba is also on the sidelines with a broken rib picked up against Porto and is set to be joined by Christiano Ronaldo - who is very doubtful after suffering a thigh injury in the match.

To add to United's defensive woes, Gary Neville completes his three-match suspension for the sending-off he picked up against City in their FA Cup encounter and that incident may yet cause a hangover into this game.

The experienced England international was first booked for diving in the box and then shown a straight red card for pushing his head in the face of Steve McManaman - who was accused in some quarters of over-reacting.

Quinton Fortune is still unavailable, but at least Ferguson will be able to welcome back Roy Keane after his European ban.

That means that Keane is almost certain to play as a makeshift centre-back alongside Wes Brown, with Phil Neville and John O'Shea taking the full-back roles in a decidedly weak looking rearguard.

And it is the defensive record which is most worrying for the champions. They have kept only one clean sheet this calendar year - in a goalless draw with Newcastle United - and have conceded ten goals in their last five games. Compare that to Arsenal and Chelsea, who have let in only four goals in the same period.

What was at one point the meanest defence in the Premiership now has many cracks, and Manchester City will be looking to exploit that.

Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are almost certain starters from those left in midfield, but Sir Alex must decide whether to hand Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first start since returning from injury or stick with Darren Fletcher in support of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha.

City have problems of their own, but of a very different nature. Their concern is not of a trophy-less season - but simply preserving their Premiership status for another term.

It goes without saying that Kevin Keegan remains under pressure as City stand only three points above the trap door. But despite a run which has seen them win only one of their last 16 games, there is still the feeling that they should have the ability to put a run together to secure safety.

The most worrying statistic is City's home form, having beaten only Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers at their new City of Manchester Stadium since making the move from Maine Road. Their last home win, against Bolton, came almost five months ago on October 18.

It is often said that to avoid being dragged into trouble you have to be winning your home games, and that's what City are discovering to their cost.

But while United have injury worries all over the pitch, Keegan has only to deal with the loss of Anelka - a big loss though it is. He serves the last game of a three-match suspension for his dismissal against Arsenal, but that news is tempered by the return of Paulo Wanchope.

The Costa Rican striker has been out since December following surgery on a knee problem, but came through City's Senior Cup victory over Bury on Wednesday night with a clean bill of health and could be thrown straight into the derby alongside Robbie Fowler.

The prospect of a high-scoring encounter on Sunday is a very real possibility, as was suggested when the two sides met at Old Trafford in the FA Cup a month ago to the day. United ran out 4-2 winners but Fowler, ploughing a loan furrow with support from deep by Shaun Wright-Phillips, did enough to suggest they can trouble their more illustrious visitors.

City won this fixture 3-1 last season; Nicolas Anelka and Shaun Goater (2) for the home side with Solskjaer replying. But that was the first derby success for a side starved of bragging rights for years.

It is their only victory over United since they handed out a 5-1 humbling way back in September 1989, and they went through a patch in the 90s where they lost eight consecutive derby games, conceding 20 goals in the process.

But such are frailties of United at this moment in time that such domination seems doubtful.

City know they have to start picking up points on their own turf, and the high-octane atmosphere of the first ever clash at their new home may provide the impetus to at least gain a share of the spoils.

My team would be:
------------------------- Howard ----------------------------
Phil ----------- Brown -------------- O'Shea ------------ Pugh
Kleberson ----- Scholes -------------- Butt ------------- Giggs
---------------- RvN ---------------- Saha ------------------

Bench: Caroll, Fletcher, Solskjaer, Forlan, McShane/Spector?

I'm taking it neither Mickey nor Ronaldo are fit for the game, in which case I would go for

------------ Howard -----------

Phil ---- Keane ---- Wes ---- JOS

Fletcher -- Butt --- Scholes --- Giggs

--------- Ruud --------Saha --------

If Djemba Djemba is fit then i'd have him ahead of Nicky Butt

Sorry to dissapoint u lot but the following players all all Injured or not available for the match and its looking really BAD now- Keane, silvestre, Djemba2, Gary neville, fortune,Ronaldo. well so it leaves only Wes and O'shea as the only defenders left, Oh NO, we will probably have phil in the back somewhere and also I heard fergie may play Danny Pugh also. This is bad, really bad. An unexperienced reserve player and phil neville in defence???, I can't see us winning this one really, probably a draw.

I reckon Fergie would start with this lineup. I don't think he'll risk throwing in Pugh in a derby.

------------ Howard -----------

Phil ---- O'Shea ---- Brown ---- Giggs

Fletcher -- Butt --- Scholes ---- Ole

--------- Ruud --------Saha -------

subs: Caroll, Forlan, Bellion, Kleberson, Ronaldo/Pugh/Bardsley

I think we need Scholes in midfield. We are not passing the ball well enough at the moment and Scholes intelligenent use of the ball is needed more in a deep midfield role.

I would play this team,

------------- Howard -----------

Kleb---- O'Shea ---- Brown --- Phil-

Ole---- Butt --- Scholes --- Giggs---

--------Ruud -------Saha -------

I think Kleberson could do a job for us at right back. I'm certain the passing from full back positions would be better. With Gaz and Phil, they frequently pump those long balls into the corner for Ruud to chase. We are playing like the bloody scousers.

The second one looks better, phil will be a better LB than giggs who we need in the midfield, and kleberson may be good at RB we never know.

It just show how shallow we are at the back at reserve level. When Ashley Cole is injured - Arshole Winger has the luxury to bring in the nvr-heard-before Clichy and he did a fantastic job ...

Sometimes I was just thinking if we lack of the courage to just give the youngsters some chance or have we not done enough to prepare them to this level yet - just none of them are??

I thouhg Lynch has been doing well in the right-back position and he's probably one of the most snr youngsters - if so then he should probably be given the right-back role for SUN showdown .. ? Kleberson - I haven't seen him with a lot of defensive ability frankly - Djemba2 probably a better choice if he's avail.

Penny said:

he's not! why do people keep making up formations with injured players? fortune, keane, silvestre, djemba, gary neville and ronaldo are all out.

So it's off to the big council house in Manchester - is this actually a home or away match? :p

------------------Howard---------------

--P Neville---Brown--O'Shea---Pugh--

-------------Butt-----Fletcher-----------

----Solskjaer----Scholes-----Giggs----

---------------van Nistelrooy-----------

Carroll
Kleberson
Forlan
Saha
Lynch/Bellion

Doesn't look that bad at all - we would be asking for it though if we played 4-4-2 with no protection for the back-four.

The only occassions we have won a match since the beginning of February have been with 4-2-3-1, we have lost or drawn all the 4-4-2 matches. :nervous:
