Manchester City 17/18 discussion | "If you're here for the Champions clap your hands" (#6505)

Would be interesting to know what tactics Hodgson used I just caught the tail end of the match but City could have easily lost that.

Dreadful again. But let's keep pretending they're playing like they were in September.

De bruyne I would say is a near certain bruise, 5 days max, Jesus looked a little worse

Today showed that at some stage they will lose. People saying they will go unbeaten and looking towards games against Liverpool/Spurs away as their only chance of slipping up. They'll end up losing to some random nobody. That's how football works (except for a couple of times a century).

31.12.17 was the start of an unbelievable City meltdown, which culminates in us winning the title on the last matchday of the season after signing Griezmann in January. Believe.

Crystal Palace already lost at home against Arsenal this week so I didn't expect them to lose again to be honest. City should be happy with a point IMO.

Gutted we won't get the record. Lucky to get out of there with a draw TBH as Palace were the superior team.

If the injuries to Jesus & KDB are as serious as they seem we are in real trouble for the rest of the season. Any injury to Aguero & we have no fit strikers. We also have no creativity in MF if Silva & KDB are out for extended periods. Not great going into the Liverpool game.

We should have enough of a buffer to win the PL. Don't like our chances in the rest of the competitions though.

I’m not surprised. Pundits acting as if them winning games like this is a certainty are deranged and naive (I.e Mersin, Nicholas, etc). Football doesn’t work like that, you can’t be fecking perfect all the time regardless of how good you are.

Lose or simply not win? CP, apart from the dodgy penalty had zero shots on target. Parked buses will give the opposition a chance at a point and on a rare occasion a loss but this is not revelatory as Pep routinely faced this in Germany & Spain

They had a golden chance with Townsend and Benteke should have done far better with some of the crosses. Also Ederson almost messed up in the first half, there is a big blunder in him waiting to happen.

There you go, nothing to go on. Hoping for a blunder or winning without a shot on target? If that's a strategy, not a winning one

The blunder happened against Shakhtar in the dead rubber CL game.

His style of play comes with the occasional blunder (look at Neuer), however I don't see it as a significant flaw in their defense waiting to be exploited. Shit, we couldn't...

Nothing to go on is using the fact that they had no shot on target as a relevant point today. Anyone who watched the game would know that City were lucky to an extent, take off those sky blue tinted glasses.

Is it just me or despite these injuries, Jesus and KDB, they don't really need Alexis. But they will maybe go for him just for the laugh.

How exactly were City lucky? They had the lion's share of possession and actual shots on target as well as half chances - it was night & day.

You don't have to have the lion's share if possession to have the better chances.

Palace were deserving of their point imo.

I have noticed that people ignore all the chances City miss, and focus on the 1-2 "sure" chances from the opposition. If both sides are equally clinical, City win.

But yes, deserved point from Palace.

How about if you have the lion's share of the possession, the better chances AND shots on target?

I said nothing about deserving a point just that it's hardly an example of how you beat City when they came nowhere near to beating them apart from the dubious penalty

Of course it's an example of how you beat city. You start off with not making stupid mistakes and keeping tight defensively. Obviously we were away and Palace at home but despite having the better players, we found ourselves 1 down pretty quickly and subsequently having to chase a superior team.

Obviously it isn't going to always work. In fact, most times it probably won't work. But teams like Palace probably have their best chance of picking up points vs city in this manner.

Dubious penalty or not, they got it. If he'd had enough of a cool head to put it away, we'd be talking about city's first league defeat. That is the closest any of us have come to beating city so far.

Yup if they're serious you're fecked for CL. Sanchez suddenly looks like a necessity for safeguarding the league too imo.

I think that's pretty standard when fans analyse matches like this between 'lower' teams and the top teams. They will focus disproportionately on the chances the lower placed team had as so many people are probably convinced that City will walk away with the match.

The league is a dead cert now imo. They've done what Chelsea did last season and built up such a buffer that other teams won't be able to match them.

I think we picked up more points than Chelsea did in the second half of last season. In fact, at one point, I think we had 12 or 13 wins out of 13/14 games. It was too late by that point though as the gap was too large.

The title race is dead as a dodo. City could play their stiffs from here on and they’d comfortably have too much for the rest.

Sorry mate, he's a Utd fan pretending to be a City fan.

You got out of jail with the injury time penalty, but it means the unbeaten league season is still possible. You take the draw and move on. With the squad you have, there is plenty of cover and a set way of playing. Any long term absence of de Bruyne would be a big blow of course.

Pretty much it requires a side to go on a run like theirs and nobodies going to do that. 5 point leads are pretty big,15 no chance. People underestimate the value of even small points leads sometimes. It's why I'm still annoyed at us dropping points at home to Everton and WBA in consecutive games.
