Manchester City 17/18 discussion | "If you're here for the Champions clap your hands" (#6505)

Well yeah, then playing Sane there seems daft even if they do push up.

Yeah, he was too blame for the goal too. He got muscled off the ball and instead of tracking back stood there waiting for the LB to do the work then had a sudden realisation "Oh shit I'm the LB". His laziness meant Kompany had to push out wide once Fernandinho was beat and Rooney was free (although Stones didn't cover himself in glory by running straight past him.)

Yeah, maybe an experiment Pep will stop trying if it fails badly enough.

Another season, another year City get overrated by media and Caftards alike.

City can finish 17th a season but everyone especially the Caf and media will be saying they'll win the league next season just for them to struggle to even challenge. It has become a cycle.

...City finished 3rd. United finished 6th.

A lot of people on here thought United would win the title before a ball was kicked.

Why is it weird that City were backed?

That level of dominance with ten men is actually quite impressive, to be fair. They didn't create a lot, mind you. And their defensive problems will still persist.

I've seen enough to know that the new goalie is a clown, too.

Think it's too early to write them off, regardless of what we saw tonight.

Chelsea didn't start well last season and won the league.

@Minimalist
Its every season though. City can do no wrong from June until September every fecking year. On here, the media.. City will walk the league is a phrase that rivals blessing in disguise for its overuse on here

I feel like their attacking midfielders/ playmakers are too similar. David Silva, Bernardo Silva and KDB. They all want the ball to feet and then try play the perfect pass. Need a bit of variety imo

All week Ive heard pundits claim its too early to judge Utd as title favourites yet always seem to pick City in the same breath.
That never made sense to me. What had City shown?
They desperately need a Matic in their midfield
Also Walker being so offensively average sticks out like a sore thumb in this side
This is something I ABSOLUTELY do not understand. It's been like this for a good 4 or 5 years and it never materialise.

Not only do they get picked as favorite, they're expected to walk all these league seasons and they always end up struggling with other teams winning them. Then comes a new season and we're back to hearing how City are overwhelming favorite to win the league without even needing to prove themselves first.

It's so odd.

I thought their goalie was alright. His distribution was something else. That one pass to Aguero... jeez

Personally i thought Everton let them play with a lot of possession. Almost like they thought absorbing the pressure and getting them on the break. Unfortunately they didnt have the players to pull something like that off. Their forwards would lose the ball so many times only for it to get thrown back :@

Still time to buy a Monaco player or a 2. Seriously, I don't think they'll be any different to last season. Buying players is good and all but Pep will be stuck with his strange ways and they won't win the title. Despite the fact everyone has them as favorites.

Overrated imho.

The media and hype surrounding this side was as if they'd walk through the league with ease. Pretty apparent even after the money splashed on defense it is very suspect and goaltending is far from certain.

I don't see how a side like that can overcompensate those things for an entire season and rely on their attack to bail them out week in week out. Just don't see it as a recipe for winning the league. Top4 sure but unless things drastically change, not enough balance to maintain such a tactic for the entire campaign.

Edit: B Silva looks class however. Great pickup for City (unfortunately :p)

Really think that they should get rid of Kompany. The guy is way past his best now and doesn't guarantee to be fit for long periods of time anyway. Otamendi is a fraud, I've never seen a guy defending so much by throwing himself on the ground at every opportunity he gets.

Peps tactics are questionable.

Spends £150m on full/wing backs and starts Sane at wing back.

Not a lot of people thought United would win the title be it fans or media, that you're simply making up.

It's been over 3 or 4 years that the majority even thought of United winning the title. In fact our past 3-4 seasons starts have been met with skepticism with people settling for top 4 challenge.

City finishing 3rd far from the winners Chelsea is also proving my point. Nowhere near the title challenge yet they're seen as favorite the year after by default. It was the same the year before(finished 4th level on point with United) yet were seen as overwhelming favorite the following year.

Just pure overrating.

They're a good team, but I have no clue why the media always has them as prohibitive favorites.

You'd think they've a squad far above any team in the league.

Think Pep will take time to find his best team.
Mendy will give them lot of balance as Sane is just not a wing back. Interesting to see who he leaves out. I think Bernardo silva has to start that guy is wonderful. Also think Pep wont play Jesus and Aguero together again.

I think the keeper is still a bit iffy and their defense too isnt that great. Lots of ifs and buts on them right now,They clearly have the best squad in the league, its about if they can click.

Oh frig off you eejit. Go look at the BBC list of pundit predictions or even the redcafe thread from our own supporters.

Are you also oblivious to the bookies putting United as second favourites as well?

I don't think it's clear at all.

I don't think any team clearly has the best squad in the league.

Kompany is still their best defender by a distance though and only leader they really have.

If they sell him their stuck with Stones, Otamemendi and then Mangala. That is grim.

It's not only the media, Caf also join in that circlejerk.

It's actually hard to tell who overrate them more between the media and Caf.

They remind me a lot of us under lvg. Observed this last season too, all the sideways passing with zero penetration. However, even with this draw I will still have city as my favorites to win the league. I feel pep has to improve massively and another repeat of last season will have a huge impact to his cv.

True.

Not gonna lie, I did pick City to win the league, but I believe it'll be a very close title race.

Don't see them as massive favorites nor do I think their squad is far above anyone's.

They look a scary team, but their bark is worse than their bite. Their attack looks a bit disjointed so far this season, just not linking up quite as smoothly as they want and they have their moments at the back too.

I reckon that when they play well they'll decimate teams. If they play poor to average, they won't be able to shut teams out and will leak goals and squander chances. It harps back to the cliché, 'grinding out results', these guys don't feel like they'll grind out a result when they play poorly. I may be wrong, but just get a vibe it'll be all or nothing.

If I was an opposition manager with pace on my side, i'd tell my guys to run at them, they don't seem to like that - they had difficulties with Calvert-Lewin tonight, so you put Lukaku, Pogba and Rashford/Martial running at them, I reckon they'll shit their designer pants.

They have the best quality clearly in terms of squad but it is a unbalanced squad though. Also their team seems so unstructured.

Let's see if the quality can overcome the imbalance and also Pep will cost them few times with his weird ways and lack of defensive focus.

Aguero and Jesus should not start together. There is too much talent in midfield to justify having one of Aguero/Jesus shoehorned out wide.

Looks to me like Pep is trying to fit everyone into the team even if they are good players a lot of them are too similiar and get in each others way.

I'm not really seeing the supposed media love-in with City that others are seeing. They are simply not that interesting so the media isn't as arsed to write negative stories about them. Man Utd on the other hand gets you clicks.
