Manchester City 17/18 discussion | "If you're here for the Champions clap your hands" (#6505)

I'll post this here, but what do you think Pep will have made of Utd's performance defensively today? He must be licking his lips, specially now Pogba is also out. Sanchez had an average game but the position he took up just in front of the 3 defenders will have Silva or KdB interested. So much space.

We played very openly against Arsenal. No chance Mourinho will do that against City, especially as without Pogba we will find it far harder to score if we go a goal down. He'll probably be parking the biggest double decker he can find and going for the counter attack.

Yeah but that’s a benefit to be fair.

Stones has been good this year...

On the Pogba comments, I think Paul was just trying to say that they would struggle with injuries to key players like we have. He wouldn't wish injury on other players, he just worded it poorly.

Still the best defence in the league (having played a game more than City).

With two first choice CBs out injured.
The best defence in the league do not concede a similar amount of shots in 1 match, that city have conceded in total for all their PL matches.

There is an arguement for the best goalie. But defence, no chance.

Give your head a wobble. In addition to the myriad of examples above. Scoring a winner in the 97th minute against Bournemouth when there was only 5 minutes of injury time is also lucky.

Not this shit again. Tell you what mate - why don’t you give your own head a wobble? There were several stoppages in that 5 minutes of added on time even before Sterling scored. The ref spent well over a minute having a word with both managers and you ignore the fact that Bournemouth themselves very nearly won the game in the 96th minute just before we scored. Not only that, once the game finally restarted after the goal the ref played on for the best part of a minute.

In short, you’re talking bollocks:

Turns out they do though.
Eh?

There’s an, albeit, humourous tongue in cheek thread to a fax machine...

Sky could easily run a story today about United position for ‘what if ddg didn’t save anything all match’ cf their ‘what if sterling didn’t score at the end of matches’.

Echoing (only) Pogba’s remarks, Ddg would be the only united player, consistently over the past 4 years, that would be very useful to the opposition to not be playing.

Even the most basic figure of GA is the same number as city, albeit for 1 game more.

Added to the already mentioned shots a goalie has faced...

None of which inspire confidence in the supposition of the best defence.

33 shots against - most against United since stats started.
14 - most saves (equal) ever by a goalie.

Goalie yes, defence ... no.

You can write a long post all you want but we are still actually the best defence in the league.

You should also factor in that we often invite pressure to counter, against the top 6 we always do it.

Meanwhile you play possession based and therefore don't expose your defence nearly as much.

Ok, I see , I’m wrong.

33 shots against and 14 goalie saves are the outstanding signs of a working tactic employed by a great defence.

Obviously.

And if City don’t concede a goal today, the only positive statistical measure so far put forward, GA, will be equal across the number of games, rather than the fraction better per game average that it is prior...

We've conceded 1 goal at home this season, 1 from open play in a calender year.
Is this even a conversation worth having?

This needs more attention.

It's just laziness to credit De Gea entirely for our recent successes in the league, although he did/does play a significant role obviously.

Has Pep been banned yet for his antics midweek or is he going to have it swept under the rug?
What antics? Pep's an intense weirdo but it was cleared up immediately by Redmond who confirmed that everything said between the pair was completely complimentary. I'm not sure Pep can be banned for being an eccentric.

Would surprise me, tbh. After beating us maybe Mourinho might be happy with a draw.

A draw suits them down to the ground whilst doing us no favours whatsoever. Jose will go for the win 100%, a 6 point swing is just too big an opportunity to pass up.

It will be a massive risk to play an open game against this City team, but one way or another we have to find a way to win this game. I have full faith that Jose will find a way, even without Pogba.

Have only just joined the forum but it does seem we have a lot of opposition fans on here posing as Reds. Has it always been like this?

You are on the WUM here surely. The team which concedes the lowest number of goals at season end is deemed to have had the best defence. It has been this way since time began. A team can have 1000 shots against them during the season but concede 10 goals. Another team may have 50 shots against them & concede 11 goals. The team which conceded 10 goals will be deemed to have had the best defence. You may say this is down a team's GK. A GK is part of the defence though.

I would hope any further fatuous responses from you on this matter would be met with the Ban Hammer as you are clearly on the Wum.

He will have to play Herrera, even if he is awful atm.

The poster you replied to supports city, no wonder you think that if you cant read the supports bit.

My bad, didn't notice the supports section. I was talking more about other posters in this & other threads though.

The OP has alot of posts so presume he's not constantly on the WUM. Most of his posts do seem to come across this way though. Look's as though English isn't his first language so he probably doesn't pick up on his poor posting style. I'm sure though he is trying to say that City have a better defence than Utd. I do think he genuinely believes it even though the stats say otherwise.

Games played/goals conceded.

Well, the stats say that City have conceded nine goals this season and United have also conceded nine. By your definition that means the two defences are of the exact same ability? Unless City concede this afternoon, then United's is better? Or, if City keep a clean sheet today and then win next week, then City's defence is better?

Do you know what, I think I prefer JASR's more nuanced approach to a good defence.

Apologies if my style isn't to your liking. Apologies if my English isn't to your liking. Please check who I support before asking for me to be banned.

One doesn't say, "It's bad to say this, but I hope they (City) get some important players injured." and then people claim its worded wrong

There's video as well so there's no possibility of misinterpretation. Not sure I've ever heard a professional athlete readily admit they hoped for others to get injured, beggars belief

Another team playing a back 10 and time wasting since the first minute. Really hope we hammer these antifootball cnuts to prove a point.

He can be banned for being overly aggressive though. Just because Redmond wants to gets tapped up doesn’t mean Peps behaviour was acceptable. What if he does it again with a less compliant player?

And what point would that be?

West Ham are never gonna take you on football wise. They're here to get a point and it'll be a huge surprise if they do. It's on your lot to break that down because there's no law against it and it's a valid approach.

They just got hammered by Everton. What did you expect? Playing to their strenght otherwise it would be suicide. They will get crushed with any approach anyways.

To be fair Sterling was looking to dive from the first minute so both sides can be accused of antifootball.

I don't mind the bus parking, I do have issue with time wasting in the first few minutes. They actually seem to be showing a bit of intent now.
