Manchester City 17/18 discussion | "If you're here for the Champions clap your hands" (#6505)

There's literally a City fan calling Sanchez a mercenary for daring to accept United's offer over City's

He's chosen United because they offered more money. The likes of the BBC and Maks Cardenas both reported he'd prefer to move to City. They're as reliable as it gets in general and in terms of the Chile national team. The amount of City players I've seen called mercenaries on here, from Silva to Aguero, yet look at the umbrage as soon as it's suggested a player's gone to United with the primary motive being financial.

City's football is out of this world. It's like reliving Mozart and Beethoven only in football.

They do play good football, but they are being exposed in defence quite a bit in the last month. Few cracks starting to appear.

With Kompany being finished they will probably go spend a sly £100m to fix the problem, they've already spent £130m on fullbacks so another hundred won't hurt.

Not too surprising in my opinion. Stones was out injured for a while and is finding his feet again, and we lost Delph (who isn't even a left back) and are playing a young winger there.

How honourable. Hypothetically of course.

Pep has now said he was worried about Sanchez upsetting the balance of his team. He must have had an epiphany in January, sometime between bidding £20m and getting snubbed.
He personally was not snubbed in any way. The dealmakers lost out because a fully costed offer which suited our pay structure as a whole was rejected by the Chileans and TBH I don't blame them for doing so.
I previously posted that City come out of this with no credit so don't imagine that I'm 100% backing their stance. I understand why each party did what they did.
Just bizness, is all.

Spot on. Sad part is people lap it up, so press and doing great job.

Also if you didn't know football, you would have thought City players played for 3 meals a day, not for big wages they pay.
Big wages yes. Biggest wages no.
Not that it really matters too much given that FFP will always give you the most flexibility and Abu Dhabi will always be more willing to spend the max until they achieve their aims.

You're a good poster but very deluded if you think Pep decided not to bother with the deal. That was only reported after a City media brief following it becoming blatantly obvious the player had chosen United. It was a veiled attempt to save face.

You still seem to be ignoring the fact your alleged deal with Sanchez was illegal in the first place and clearly upset Arsenal and Wenger (hence the scathing comments about City the other day).

You tried a sly and underhand deal and then have the audacity to complain when you get gazumped at the last minute by United.

With regards to quotes from staff obviously there are none but you're not silly and are fully aware City have been briefing the media relentlessly about Sanchez since the summer. Funny how when you had lost the deal the media were briefed that Pep pulled the plug, the deal was too expensive and the player always wanted city as his number one choice.

Very childish.

Again not true buddy. We agreed the deal with arsenals consent in the summer, they pulled out. I haven't read anything about a deal in this window. Other then we thought he'd come for the same money and he wouldn't.

Wenger's crying is over the veiled court threats (which were silly by city) but Wenger has spouted shit about city since our first title. See his "petrol and ideas" comment not a month ago. Guy is a bitter wanker of namco like proportions with regards city because we use them as a feeder club (Clichy, sagna, nasri) etc..

Thought we were excellent today going forward but poor with what little we had to deal with defensively. Ederson has looked a lot more shaky recently and I think went down a bit early for the goal. Dunno if the Liverpool game is in his head a bit.

Thought KDB clone was excellent at LB (but switched off for the goal), interesting he started there over Danilo but he was excellent on the ball. Believe he only had 3 less successful passes than Newcastle today, I'd like to see him get a go further forward but given the Delph and Mendy injuries he'll likely be LB in the home games and games against weaker teams till Delph's back. Danilo will probably play the big ones ahead of him.

Apparently according to FCBarca City didn't want him last summer
True, we wanted him the summer before, paid his buyout and offered him a contract and everything but he backed out at the end. This was all before we went for Stones. I think the original idea was for him to be the future first team lcb partnering Stones.

Yup, meant 2016. City were furious apparently as he had agreed to join.

I've been saying for months that we needed another defender sooner than a forward. Hopefully we can squeeze Laporte over the line.

Fred, I'm less concerned about. It's between him and a winger we need after we sort the defensive shortages out.

I'd argue Fred is far more important as we don't have a straight Dinho backup.

I quite admired Laporte's stance then, I think he was holding out for a move to Barca which never came. Take him in a heartbeat over Evans.

Fred or someone Fred like is more important too I agree. Fernandinho is starting to tire.

It's true that we don't but we can cope with Gundogan slotting in, Danilo and Delph can play there as well. We need DM cover but we don't need it as desperately as we do CB/LB cover.

How much has Guardiola spent on defenders since he arrived? For such an attacking team, he loves signing a defender too!

We've signed four defenders since he arrived. Stones, Walker, Danilo and Mendy, to add to Kompany, Otamendi and Mangala. Mendy and Kompany aren't fit, which leaves us with five defenders to cover for four positions. Laporte just gives us an extra option.

£50m on each of Stones of Walker, £45m on Mendy (I think?) and £25m on Danilo.

I'm not really sure why spending money on four defenders means we can't spend money on a fifth, especially when we've had two midfielders at left-back since September.

To be fair Silva and Aguero had zero reason to join City other than money.

It's hard to say that there is no reason to join United other than money.

It's absolutely fine if you want to throw more money around, it's just a good job you don't have a cheque book manager and oil money funding your operation otherwise people might accuse you of being something other than the immaculately run football club that you are.

Ouch :D

What did City have to offer when signing Aguero and Silva really?

The transfer world is now crazy, as we all know, and who knows where it will end. Chelsea changed things then City took it the next level, so that now price inflation on transfer fees and salaries has rocketed. Fifty million isn't considered out of the ordinary now.

Not sure if you've ever heard the story behind us signing Silva and Yaya Toure. We were locked in negotiations with both of them but we needed something extra to get them across the line, so Garry Cook (the er, genius that he was) lied to both of them. He told Yaya we'd already signed Silva, and he told Silva we'd already acquired Yaya. They both signed and the rest is history.
