Manchester City v Manchester United

I don't remember Gibson or wellbeck having a single good game.

Wellbeck just constantly runs into defender every time he gets the ball, then proceeds to whinge when hebloses the ball, immediate casing point being beckfords goal, and there are many cases of him doing this in good positions and not just when he is out wide but up top too.

Gibson doesn't have any noticable talent other than that he has a rocket of a shot, which isn't enough to make it at united to put it simply.
They're both shit would sum it up...

I expect to see:
VDS

Rafael Brown Evans Evra

Valencia Carrick Fletcher Anderson Park

Rooney
:boring:

Fergie has already said that Gibson will start so I don't know where all these lineups without him are coming from. He said he wanted to stick with the young lads, but I think he only mentioned Gibson and Rafael.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is in line for a dramatic comeback tomorrow night for the Carling Cup semi against Manchester City.

The Daily Star says United’s much-missed centre-back will be joined for the crucial clash by Nemanja Vidic, who has been out for the past two weeks.

Sir Alex Ferguson aims to restore his first-choice defensive pairing for the first leg at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Ferdinand has not played since October 25, when United lost at Liverpool, as a persistent back problem forced a prolonged lay-off. United have lost five times in all competitions since.

From Daily Star.. I for one hope that this isn't true, Rio and Vidic both some need match fitness(esp. Rio), It will be far too risky to play them in a big match straightaway and People who are writing off the likes of Welbeck at the age of 19 on the basis that he has played poorly in 2-3 matches on the left wing position are clueless

and Fabio aswell, personally I am excited to see the twins on opposite flanks, it has only happened once I think

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has vowed to exact revenge against Manchester United, when the two sides face each other in the Carling Cup tomorrow night. Over the weekend Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was quoted claiming he had no issue with Tevez playing for Manchester City and that his decision to sign for their bitter City rivals was in the past, yet Tevez suggests he wants revenge against his former club.

The diminutive Argentine admits Manchester City are still reeling from their 4-3 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier in the season, and claimed he and his teammates want to knock Sir Alex Ferguson’s side out of the competition over the two legs in a bid to win their first major trophy since 1976.

Tevez moved from Manchester United to Manchester City in the summer in a highly controversial move that initially looked ill-advised. Despite his meagre goal return at the beginning of the season, not helped by injury problems, the former West Ham star has plundered eleven goals in nine games, while Sir Alex Ferguson’s side continue to look indifferent.

The Manchester City striker told the Daily Mirror: “What happened at Old Trafford earlier this season is still in our heads and this is the moment for revenge,”

“I want to play in this match for many reasons. It's a semi-final, a derby and there's a bitter rivalry between the two clubs.

“I believe this is a good moment for us to play a local rival like United, who never normally give anything to their opponents.

“In a semi-final over two matches and in a derby, anything is possible.”

“But I think the key will be the return game at Old Trafford and we must ensure we get a good result at home.”

The Argentina international believes the club are on the right track in their bid to break the top four, and the 25-year-old urged his teammates to seize their golden opportunity to win silverware this season. The forward intimated the whole club were working well with Roberto Mancini.

Tevez added: “Slowly we have improved our level, the squad is confident, morale is high and if we get a victory over United it will be sensational.

“With Roberto Mancini, things are progressing. The coach has built a good understanding with the players.”

“I still believe that City can win a trophy this season and the Carling Cup could be our first.”

Both yourself and Phelans Shorts seem to have neglected Gibson's performance in the leg against Spurs

I expect Gibson to start

I just hope that Fletcher starts beside him

i agree with you there pogue, gibson needs a more experienced man beside him.

I think SAF will be very cagey with his line up and given that there is no FA cup 4th round to contend with we might see a very strong line up

I will snap if they get passed us.

I think Anderson will start. He deserves it after playing very well against Burnley.

If it's just him and Gibson in midfield we're FUBAR'd IMO.

Gibson, Anderson and Carrick or Fletcher would work for me.

I have no idea what kind of side SAF will put out for this one.

Undoubtedly there will be a few selections which surprise everyone.

I know its the carling cup and there will be alterations but for a change it would be really good to see more or less the the same side line up for two games in a row. This is the most excited ive been for a carling cup game in ages, and thats including the final.

I don't expect Carrick to play, I think Fergie was a bit angry with him after letting Eagles run down the pitch for the Nugent chance, and that's why he ... instead of Scholes ... was substituted.

Then again if he does play it may be a side with a few more fringe players than some people are expecting.

Didn't that midfeild work well against Spurs?

Might expect 4-4-2 with Fletcher on the right. That's just me.

I was a bit surprised at that subby at that delicate stage of the game tbh, didnt think carrick was playing that poorly and if anything scholes might have been sacrificed due to his weary old legs. What you say would go someway to explaining it if true, but also was carrick not the one who steamed back to put pressure on fletcher for his chance?

Yep they did ok that game, but its not the midfield i would like to see.

I really hope not, seems like a total waste of fletcher out there. If we need industry on the right flank we have valencia or park that will get up and down all day.

Giggsy must be a shoe in to start with him being rested you would think?

I would rather see Giggs play against Hull City, but that's just me, he is still recovering from something so he isn't a shoe in necessarily, particularly with the squad United have you can't gaurantee anything here.

I don't think playing Fletcher on the right is necessarily a waste, Rafael does need protection and would provide industry, I just feel that away from home I think United are more likely to be productive with two upfront than one.

The one thing you get from Fletcher that you wont necessarily get from Park and Valencia is that Fletch could drift in and make up the central midfield numbers if City play a 4-3-3 ... they are leaning away from it a bit. Park may do a job on the other flank, if Fabio plays.

I do think City's left back area is weak, but I think the greater priority is to keep a foothold in midfield and have a bit of punch upfront. To expect Owen to capitalise on City's forward line on his own is too much of a gamble.

Reds wait on Berba and Giggs

Dimitar Berbatov and Ryan Giggs are United's main fitness concerns ahead of the Carling Cup semi-final visit to Eastlands, for which Sir Alex Ferguson has pledged to pick "a strongish team, with some young players".

Berbatov, who has had problems with a knee injury recently, picked up a dead leg during an impressive display on Saturday in which he scored in the 3-0 win over Burnley. But Sir Alex is hoping the Bulgarian front man will make the short trip to the City of Manchester Stadium.

"I thought Dimitar had got a knock on the knee," the United boss said on Monday lunchtime. "It turned out it was a dead leg. We are having a look at that at the moment. I am hoping he will be all right but we will see what he is like in the morning.

"He is one doubt. Ryan is another because he missed Saturday's game. We have to give him time to recover a bit. All the rest are fit."

After the successful return of Edwin van der Sar on Saturday, there is further good news defensively for the Reds with the news that Rio Ferdinand is "training quite well now". "He's not in contention for Tuesday night, but he is closer though," said the boss.

The manager has a number of considerations to make with regards to his team selection; that includes selecting a team that merits a semi-final against a local rival whilst maintaining loyalty to the young men who got the Reds to this stage.

"I have got to think about getting a mix in terms of the programme we have got and also the fact I have given young players a game in the past," said the boss. "I will have a strongish team but there will be some young players."

Musts for me:

The best available defence plays.
Fletch plays.
Rooney is at least on the bench.
If we're playing shite by HT, Rooney on straight away (none of this waiting until 65-70 mins shite).
A 4-4-2 system.

Berba could miss out as could Giggs. No mention it seems about Vidic and SAF says Rio isn't in contention (though we've heard him say that before, he likes the old mind games, does the boss :D).

I can see Gibson starting in midfield (I just hope it's not alongside Anderson as they don't do very well together) and I can see Owen & Diouf up front/

Both yourself and Phelans Shorts seem to have neglected Gibson's performance in the leg against Spurs
He has a good shot on him, but the rest of his midfield play is so poor.

I don't expect Carrick to play, I think Fergie was a bit angry with him after letting Eagles run down the pitch for the Nugent chance, and that's why he ... instead of Scholes ... was substituted.

Then again if he does play it may be a side with a few more fringe players than some people are expecting.
My guess is Carrick was taken off for a rest as he will play against City?

I do love your reasoning though as to why you think he was substituted. It amazes me how Gary Neville lasted the 90 minutes, seeing as he was a liability that game, surely Fergie should have been angry with Neville and substituted him too?

Agreed. Carrick was decent against Burnley. I think he was taken off to rest him for City match - same goes for Rooney. I expect a Carrick-Fletcher midfield against City with perhaps Anderson in there as well if we go for a 3 man central midfield.

Then either you have a very poor memory or you haven't watched many of his first team appearances. Welbeck has produced some super football this season (very much like Berbatov, Rooney, Owen and indeed Macheda - no-one has been totally convincing, all have had good moments, some more than others, and all have looked poor at times) and links very well with Macheda when the two of them feature in the first team together.

wellbeck super football  he's done nothing of the sorts at all never mind just this season, and macheda has had a poor season aswell, with the exception of CSKA at home, so this link up play you mention is non existant

They're both shit would sum it up...

was basically my first comment in this thread

he hardly played well, scoring two goals doesn't necessarily mean he played well now does it.

Looking forward to this game. I personally think naming our team is going to be too hard. Fergie has stated he is going to include some youngsters but its also going to be a strong team. I hope he plays a strong team, this isn't going to be an easy game.

cant wait for this one...

tra la la, we all cityyyyyyyyy, tra la la la la la la la

Well fair enough, I just thought the Carrick substitution coming much earlier than the Rooney and Berbatov's one was a reactionary one. Surely proper reasoning would suggest that Berbatov (being injured well before the Carrick sub was made) would've been better player taken off first. Ferguson seemed to take Carrick off with a sense of urgency.

I just think Fergie thought he was having a bad game on the day, he looked disappointed in himself coming off. I'm not saying he didn't have good spells, Nani sometimes has good spells in games he gets taken off before half time.

I don't see any reason why Carrick would be needed in this game when Fletcher's coming back from suspension and Gibson and Anderson avaliable. I could see him on bench warming duty before coming back in for the game against Hull.

I'll be very surprised if he starts.

Would seriously prefer Park to Welbeck in this team, I think Vidic and Rio will be back too.

This game is huge. It is more than just a Carling Cup Semi Final.

There has been nothing but doom and gloom surrounding the club over the past week or two. This is a must win. We must show that United is still only club in Manchester despite our dire financial situation and City's embarrassment of riches.

I honestly hope not too many youngsters play.

I'd go with this team but who knows what Fergie will do.

There. Enough to rest some key players (Evra, Valencia) and put some youth in there to mix with some of our first teamers.
