Manchester City vs. Manchester United

I think Smalling can do the job (especially alongside Ferdinand), but it's such a shame that Evans - if those rumours are true - is likely to miss the most important game of the season and the opportunity to beat City after the 1-6 and red card he got in October.

This game is taking waaaaaaaaaay too long to arrive to. Not a fan of weekends when we play on Monday obviously.

Smalling hasn't started a league game since Stoke at Old Trafford in January. It will be a hammer blow if Evans is ruled out.

feck I really hope Evans makes it. Was hoping we could drop Rafael and bring in Smalling. If Evans' out though we would have to start Rafael. Would be too risky playing Jones (out of form) and Smalling (potentially rusty) in the same back four.

I'd take Raphael/Smalling ahead of Raphael/Jones or Smalling/Jones.

Interesting. I'm not sure on this one. Assuming that the strikers will be Aguero and Tevez, supported by Silva and possibly Nasri - do we really need Evans starting? He seems to have taken the 'big' defender role, going for balls in the air, being more physical and so forth. If anything, his propensity to get too close to attackers that are more mobile show him at his worst.

So maybe, just maybe, a more agile defender like Smalling might suit the match. Smalling is also faster than Evans, and is due a big performance.

We've spoken so much this season about how good Smalling and Jones are - if one or both are forced to play in this match we shouldn't be worried, we should show some faith.

It's Rafael...

I'm looking forward to this game and as we get closer I'm feeling more confident about it. If we really turn up at our very best, I reckon we'll win, regardless of how City play. I'm starting to think this is entirely in our hands, but my god do we have to perform on Monday.

So possibly Nani and Evans out of the game that defines the season - seems fitting with our luck this season :wenger:

Surely this can't be serious! Is that a reliable source?

No idea tbh; I'm new to Twitter (and hate myself for being on there) but this guy seems to have a decent rep, and if it is from the Mirror then it's slightly more credible I suppose. Best to think the worst anyway.

This season? You mean every God damn season.

Not surprised anymore.

Indeed, while fecking City will probably even have Hargreves fit for a farewell appearance come Monday

This is my most important prediction ever. I have thought long and hard about this and I can not come up with who the victor will be so i will settle for a score of 3-2 but alas I do not know the winning side.

Nani and Evans out would be huge blows for this game. I pray they're both fit, we have suitable replacements that 9/10 times wouldn't even weaken the side, but for this game I would be picking Nani and Evans all day long.

Been thinking a lot about the teams and formations for this game, for both sides. I reckon City will line up like this:

Pantilimon; Richards, K.Touré; De Jong, Nasri; Dzeko, Balotelli
--
Hart
Zabaleta Kompany Lescott Clichy
Y.Touré Barry
Milner Tévez Silva
Aguero

There are plenty of other possibilities. Balotelli on the bench I think would just be to try and surprise people, but he could go for Johnson. Richards might be left out entirely, but I can also see him even starting. I just think for a big game like this the security of Zabaleta would be preferred. Nasri might start instead of Milner, but I think if we're starting Nani & Valencia he'll want to be able to at least try and neutralise one of them.

One of my work mates (City fan) thinks Mancini will start De Jong in midfield, sitting alongside Barry, with Yaya Touré pushing up behind Tévez. Aguero and Silva either side of him in a 4213 formation. I'm not sure that Mancini will make three more negative moves in a game that City simply have to win though. So, I expect the above line-up with perhaps Nasri over Milner.

As for us...

Rooney
Nani Young Valencia
Scholes Carrick
Evra Ferdinand Evans Rafael
de Gea
--
Amos; Jones, Smalling; Cleverley, Giggs; Welbeck, Hernández

It really depends on the fitness of Nani, Evans, and Cleverley. But if they're fit I can see all three starting. I can also see Welbeck starting but I'd rather he didn't (or Hernández for that matter). I can see SAF going for the experience here and starting Giggs behind Rooney, but I think Giggs has been a bit poor of late when he's featured. But who would put it past him to have a stormer on Monday night? Especially in a three. I just have an image of Rooney dropping deep and bringing Kompany/Lescott forward, laying it off to Scholes who picks a pass for Nani, Young, and Valencia to attack at once, against the one centreback who is left. Nani's movement has been very good as of late, so I think he could do very well switching with Young or Giggs as the winger/second striker.

But yeah, for me, if everyone's fit, 10/11 pick themselves. Young, Cleverley, Giggs, or Welbeck will be the final piece. This will probably be a draw.

I think if we can put up the BELIEVE sign in the Etihad we might just get a result. Yeah.. like in Moscow.

SAF to spring a major surprise by putting Michael Owen in the starting lineup.

Mancini just won't give up with this United are favorites even if we lose.

I am filled with pure, unbridled dread.

Why did this fixture need to be on a fecking Monday night?

I hope we're going to be able to handle pressure - really not sure. Momentum is vital at this stage, and we have none.

Should have been an early Saturday kick-off ffs Sky. Monday of all bloody days.
