Manchester United - Fulham

Who cares what he said, his first name is practically Colin. This in itself is an insult to us all.

Maybe

Reminds me. My brother does a great footballer impression. He just looks kind of grimly at you and says 'who's this?'

'It's Stern John!'

His name is John, you see, which is the joke.

All people called Colin should be shot. People called Colin with a beard... don't get me started.

Sorry, did he actually say anything at all?

I started reading the article, and then it was like cool air was being pushed through my head from left ear to right ear, I had a feint memory of embarrassment from my childhood, then I flinched back into a full, but shifted consciousness, where Fulham was actually called Hamful and Legwin Silvainski and Papa Smurf formed their midfield.

Giggs misses out

18/03/2005 - 12:59:35

Ryan Giggs will remain on the sidelines for Manchester United’s Barclays Premiership clash with Fulham at Old Trafford tomorrow.

Giggs had his nose reset on Monday after his clash with Milan’s Gennaro Gattuso during the Red Devils’ Champions League exit 11 days ago and Sir Alex Ferguson has decided it is still too sore for the Welshman to be risked even though he is fit enough to play.

Darren Fletcher and Louis Saha (both knee) are still missing but Brazilian World Cup winner Kleberson is back in the squad, as is Gary Neville, who has missed the last three games with an ankle injury.

Provisional squad: Carroll, Howard, G Neville, P Neville, Ferdinand, Brown, Silvestre, Heinze, O’Shea, Spector, Kleberson, Fortune, Ronaldo, Keane, Scholes, Miller, van Nistelrooy, Smith, Rooney, Bellion, Rossi.

Spector in the squad :) Kleberson back :) Didn't Fergie say last week that Louis will be back for this one?

Preview: Man Utd v Fulham

RYAN Giggs is back training after breaking his nose against AC Milan in San Siro but is unlikely to face Fulham at Old Trafford.

The winger is sporting two black eyes and the Cottagers clash will probably come too soon for him.

Fulham old boy Louis Saha won't make it against his former colleagues.

Having booked in to have fluid drained off his knee, the swelling went down on its own, but the French striker is not ready for a comeback and has pulled out of the France squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Israel.

Gary Neville returns for the Reds after recovering from a bruised leg, so Wes Brown is likely to drop to the bench.

Fulham are likely to rely on the squad that lost two of their last three games fir the daunting trip to United as midfielder Mark Pembridge (calf) and centre-half Ian Pearce (back) are still not fit.

Manager Chris Coleman is considering recalling German full back Moritz Volz as a starter to give the impressive Liam Rosenior a break, while Collins John may stay in the line-up, with Tomasz Radzinski ready to cover Andy Cole who faces his former club.

Manchester United (from): Howard, Carroll, G Neville, Brown, Ferdinand, Silvestre, O' Shea, P Neville, Heinze, Scholes, Keane, Ronaldo, Fortune, Rooney, Van Nistelrooy, Smith, Bellion.

Fulham (from): Van der Sar, Volz, Goma, Knight, Bocanegra, Clark, Malbranque, Rosenior, Diop, Boa Morte, Jensen, John, Cole, Radzinski, McBride, Rehman, Crossley.

Cole still has point to prove
Stuart Brennan

AS is the tradition at Old Trafford, Andy Cole will be afforded a warm welcome when he returns with Fulham.

Manchester United fans have a long tradition of welcoming back former players - providing they have not blotted their copybook by words or actions since, as Paul Ince did.

Denis Law even signed for City and scored a goal that could have banished the Reds to the Second Division in 1974 - although United would have gone down anyway - and they erected a statue of him at the Stretford End!

Cole returns in good form, having scored 11 goals in 32 appearances for Fulham this season and established himself at the age of 33 as first-choice striker in a 4-5-1 formation.

Since leaving United, the impressive scoring rate of 121 goals in 275 games - the 15th best in United history - has only slightly slowed.

He netted 37 goals in 100 games for Blackburn and is averaging just over one in three games for Fulham as well.

Contrast that with his erstwhile United strike partner Dwight Yorke, three weeks his junior, who is seemingly on his way from Birmingham City to Australia to play out his days with Sydney FC.

Yorke, arguably the more naturally talented of the two, has managed 21 goals in 90 games for both Blackburn and current club Birmingham.

Paul Parker, who represented United and Fulham in his career, feels Cole will pull out the stops to prove a few points tomorrow.

He was edged out at Old Trafford by the arrival of Ruud van Nistelrooy, and found his way back to Craven Cottage via Blackburn, where his ego was always going to have an uneasy existence alongside then manager Graeme Souness' irascible temper.

Lifted

After a couple of spats, Cole left for Fulham, the club where he scored his first league goal while on loan from Arsenal in 1991.

Parker said: "I imagine his game will be lifted just by being back at Old Trafford. He'll want to prove to people that he should've been there a little bit longer.

"He'll love nothing better than to score against United."

Cole has already done that since leaving Old Trafford, bagging a Blackburn goal in a United win at Ewood Park in the 2003 League Cup semi-final.

But don't expect raptures for Cole from Reds fans tomorrow. When they come to update the roll-call of United greats, the Nottingham-born star is unlikely to make the cut.

And that is despite a goal ratio better than legends such as Eric Cantona, George Best, Mark Hughes, Sir Bobby Charlton and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Scoring bagfuls of goals is not always enough to elevate you to the pantheon of top United stars.

And it is plain that the lesser goalscorers named above all had something which Cole lacked - Cantona's charisma, Best's genius, Hughes' ferocity, Charlton's longevity or Solskjaer's loyalty.

Cole's honours list from his time at United speaks for itself - five Premiership titles, two FA Cups and a European Cup.

His partnership with Dwight Yorke electrified Europe in that fabulous Treble season, when between them they netted 53 goals.

And yet, until that season, Cole had been doubted by United fans. He could clearly find the back of the net, and his all-round game improved immeasurably after his £6m transfer from Newcastle in 1995. But there remained a suspicion that Cole was not a big-match man, and that most of his goals were not decisive.

Feats such as his five-goal spree - still a Premiership record - in the 9-0 defeat of Ipswich served to reinforce that belief.

But Cole shattered the myths in 1999. In the memorable Turin semi-final second leg, Cole snapped up the rebound from Dwight Yorke's effort to secure a 3-2 win over Juventus, and a place in the final.

And on the last day of the league season, and with victory needed to ensure the title, he squeezed a beautiful lob over Spurs keeper Ian Walker for the winner.

Approach

Cole has never helped his case by his apparent aloofness - he shuns interviews, and often appears uncommunicative.

Fulham boss Chris Coleman believes that disinterested approach to the media has brought him some unfair treatment.

When Lee Clark reclaimed the Fulham captaincy from Cole recently after returning from injury, some newspapers claimed Cole had been angry at being "stripped" of the armband.

Coleman said: "People like to get at Andy because he keeps himself to himself, but he's the second-highest scorer in the history of the Premiership and he's got 11 goals for us this season - what do people want from him?"

At United, Cole famously failed to get on with co-striker Teddy Sheringham - and yet the two struck up an understanding on the pitch.

It made Cole something of an enigmatic figure, in contrast to Yorke, whose private life was splashed across the front pages.

There was, and is, a deeper side to Cole. After a visit to Zimbabwe in 1999 he set up the Andy Cole Children's Foundation to help AIDS victims and orphans in southern Africa.

He will be welcomed back, but not lauded by the United faithful.

I can't understand why some poster want kleberson in the starting line-up?

I think he should get a chance in our current formation.

hmm...and looks like Fergie's got some big plans for him, too. :)

"Our form is good and the team is looking strong. Lads like Alan Smith and Ruud van Nistelrooy are fresh, Kleberson is back too, so we have enough ammunition to launch a really big charge."

Howard

Gaz Rio Heinze Mickey

Keano

Ronaldo Giggsy (if fit) otherwise Kleb

Would like to see this Rossi-lad since everybody speaks so highly of him. Also want Smithy to play, but upfront, not on the fecking wing. Scholesy & Rooney to be rested
