Manchester United - Fulham

Charlton 1 - 4 WBA

We've had 18 fecking corners

ooooooooo Smith chips from the centre circle, just tipped over by van der sar.

feck! Nearly 1-1 again

Jesus Christ, any touch on that ball at the end and it would have been 1-1

FT 1-0

Phew we always do it the difficult kind!

Anywho i´m cool with the 3 points, and great saves by Tim in the end :)

We should have been 4-0 up, and could have ended up drawing that game.

Ball crossed in, if he had got any sort of touch it would have been 1-1, but he completely missed it.

Who said our defence is good enough? It's alright, slightly better than Real Madrid's who had conceded the least goals in la liga up to a month ago, so those statistics of how many goals we have conceded (or how many times we've gotten lucky and opponents miss chances against us) tells me nothing. A solid CB complimenting rio is close to being as important as a new CM if we are serious about challenging the likes of chelsea and challenging for europe (watertight defences a la chelsea/juve/milan win you that cup).

sounds like a classic "united nearly fecks up at the end but get away with the points"
game.

So the attacking player was left unmarked by the defense?

Was Tim out of position or just in no man's land?

Wasn't Tims fault. Tim was a late contender for MOTM, he made 3 vital saves.

I think that's a bit unfair. The defence have been solid all season since Rios return.

smith looked better than rvn in the short time, ronaldo very dangerous, but sometimes his end product was terrible, although beeing in a perfect position. scholes was bad today, lost so many balls, hardly a good pass. rio was good, and howard made one excellent save to keep us in the game. but we should have ended the game much earlier with 2-3 goals!

we have the second best defensive record in the league, don't we? And I thought things like luck even out during the course of a long season.

A win's a win I guess.
How was Ruud in terms of overall contribution and movement?

Yes we do.

Our defence has been great all season.

He is still pretty rusty, but he does take away alot of attention from the defenders to open up space for his team mates but still not the best game from him.

Feck, I missed the last 5. Damn the feckers who makes the rules so that the beer sale closes 6 (local time).

Did anything worth mentioning happen in the last 5? (Rumours says that Smith almost scored from the half way line?

yup and got a bollocking from Keano for it since 2 or 3 united players was virtually unmarked and smith could just pass to them and they are throught on goal.

I an absolutely steaming. Does anyone else find the keyboard feels treally wierd when they're pissed??? Cant believe we nearly dropped more points to Fulham. Ah well, job doe I spose. Nutha beer? oh go on then (how many typos before I got this ickle message even slightly readble?!?)

Have fun folks....

Was it a good effort from Smithy though?

yes, unfortunately VDS got back and after that Fulham nearly score but luckily Radzinki could not get the touch or else it would have been 1-1:nervous:

but we could have just killed off the game in the 2nd half. Our build up was excellent but the final ball was bad.

Manchester United 1 Fulham 0

MANCHESTER United survived a heart-stopping late scare to clinch victory over Fulham at Old Trafford, only to find they are almost certainly battling for nothing more than second place.

Cristiano Ronaldo's thunderous first-half effort proved enough to give United one of those single-goal victories on which Chelsea's charge to the championship has been built.

But, in a worrying repeat of the previous meeting between the sides at Craven Cottage in December, Fulham emerged from an almost constant bombardment to come within inches of preserving Chris Coleman's unbeaten record against United as Lee Clark struck a post and former Red Devils favourite Andy Cole saw his shot flick wide off Tim Howard's heel.

In the end, Sir Alex Ferguson and his team were able to celebrate a 19th Premiership game without defeat, a run made all the more remarkable given they still trail Chelsea by 11 points with only eight matches of the campaign remaining.

Few who filled the stands at kick-off were seriously contemplating a tilt at the title, with even Ferguson accepting a miracle is now required to overturn Chelsea's mammoth lead.

Yet even without a championship charge, the demand for entertainment remains and Ronaldo for one is rising to the challenge.

The Portugal winger attracts as much criticism as praise for his skills, with even some of his team-mates driven to distraction by his refusal to play a simple ball.

And judging by their initial reactions when Ronaldo strode on to Roy Keane's astute pass midway through the opening period, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney would have been lining up a verbal rocket if the attack had not ended in a goal.

The strike pair were totally unmarked - and totally ignored - as Ronaldo cut inside Liam Rosenior.

But, just as they were ready to turn in red-faced fury, Van Nistelrooy and Rooney had their mouths well and truly shut as they watched the youngster's 20-yard shot flash past them, and Edwin van der Sar, and fly straight into the top corner.

It was Ronaldo's eighth goal of the campaign, leaving him just two away from winning a private, pre-season bet with his manager over his goal tally for the campaign.

Victorious

On this evidence, even a born winner such as Ferguson will not be tempted to leave Ronaldo out of his side just to ensure he ends up victorious in that specific duel.

His close control was certainly too much for the overworked Fulham defence and one moment of sublime skill stood out as he brought down Gabriel Heinze's long ball inside the penalty area with one perfect touch despite the close attentions of Zat Knight, only for the former Sporting Lisbon flyer to take the edge off his good work with a weak finish.

The incident more or less summed up United's entire performance.

In total control throughout, the Red Devils served up some slick approach play, with Ruud van Nistelrooy linking up well in his most productive display since returning from an Achilles injury five matches ago but, when Fulham defenders did not get in the way, the hosts were let down by a failure to hit the target.

Unusually, Paul Scholes was one of the worst culprits, although little blame could be attached to Gabriel Heinze, whose stinging 25-yard volley dipped just over with Van der Sar beaten after the Fulham defence had failed to adequately clear a United corner.

Though Fulham were slightly more ambitious after the break, they never remotely threatened a repeat of their win in the corresponding fixture last season.

What the Londoners were capable of though, as Ferguson was acutely aware, was the kind of last-gasp leveller that snatched three points off the Red Devils at Craven Cottage.

Ronaldo only increased the anxiety when he showed his more profligate side, drilling an excellent chance wide of the far post after being set up by Scholes' square ball.

Ferguson must have known Fulham would get a chance, and it duly arrived six minutes from the end when Lee Clark smashed a shot against the post.

In the ensuing melee, Carlos Bocanegra was twice presented with opportunities to level. Howard blocked the first, the second blasted into Steed Malbranque inside the United six-yard box.

It proved just to be the start of the dramatic latter stages which saw Cole's fierce drive flick wide off Howard's heel, Van der Sar save brilliantly from John O'Shea, then Alan Smith force the giant Dutchman into a hasty retreat to keep out an audacious shot from inside his own half which brought back memories of David Beckham's more successful effort at Wimbledon all those years ago.

Fergie fury at risky Reds

SIR Alex Ferguson has threatened to swing the FA Cup axe on his Manchester United team unless they make a dramatic improvement on the 1-0 win over Fulham.

United's failure to see off the Cottagers led to a frantic final 10 minutes at Old Trafford in which Tim Howard had to make two stupendous saves just to keep the Red Devils in front.

With Lee Clark also hitting a post and Carlos Bocanegra smashing a goalbound effort into team-mate Steed Malbranque, Ferguson was a relieved man at the final whistle.

But the Scot could not conceal his anger at his side's failure to finish Fulham off and warned their places are at risk for the semi-final clash with Newcastle at the Millennium Stadium on April 17.

"It was farcical at times, laughable," growled Ferguson. "We totally lacked a killer instinct.

"We have an FA Cup semi-final coming up and if our form doesn't match up to our expectations, I will make changes.

"If it doesn't get any better than that level of performance, it is something I will have to think about.

"We have fresh players like Alan Smith, John O'Shea and Phil Neville ready to come into the team, so we will see what happens."

Blast

Ferguson's blast was unexpected given his side had dominated virtually the entire contest and had stretched an unbeaten Premiership record to 19 games.

His mood probably was not helped by learning Chelsea had also won to maintain a seemingly impregnable 11-point lead, two of which United lost at Fulham in December when the Cottagers mounted a more successful comeback operation after being as badly outplayed as they were today.

"Chelsea keep winning, so we have to give them credit," he said. "It looks like it is an unassailable lead.

"But at the very worst, we have to finish second. This club should be qualifying automatically for the Champions League and that is what we intend to do."

The one outfield player exempt from Ferguson's criticism was match-winner Cristiano Ronaldo, whose eighth goal of the season leaves him just two away from winning a private, pre-season bet with his manager.

"Cristiano was the one player who kept his level of performance up," said Ferguson.

"Without question he was our star player. He was a real danger for us and now it looks as though I will have to pay up."
