Manchester United v Arsenal

Pete, also once RVP works his way to full match sharpness, do you see him and Chamakh being a successful partnership?

I get the feeling RVP would love the kind of space Chamakh creates with his movement, and his hold up play would also result in some good opportunities for Van persie to put that left peg into use.

van der Sar, Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, and Nani are sure starters if fit, Rooney as well. Then take your pick from Fletcher, Anderson, Carrick, Scholes, Berbatov, and Park for the rest depending on the formation Sir Alex goes for.

van der Sar
Rafael Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Nani Fletcher Anderson Park
Berbatov Rooney

Fletcher Carrick Anderson
Nani Berbatov Rooney

Fletcher Scholes Anderson
Nani Rooney Park

Some combination of the above and I think it'll be a cracking game, we need to be on the front foot, though. We've usually got the better of Arsenal but generally when we play the three-man midfield and involve Anderson IIRC.

Did Anderson and Park play their way into the team after their performance against Valencia? Did Carrick and Berbatov play themselves out of the side? Or is the improving partnership of Berbatov and Rooney enough to play them both? Will it be in a front two or three?

feck knows.

Oh, and I'm gutted I'm missing this due to work. I wish it was on Sunday instead.

I really fancy us to dominate the CB pairing Arsenal have been using.

It all depends on what we do in midfield, if we can grind them to a standstill, then yes potentially we have a real advantage with our strikers against their CB pairing.

But if we end up chasing shadows all evening...it won't be of much use.

It'll probably be Djourou & Squillaci, who've been a pretty good partnership. Most of the disasters have been Squillaci and Koscielny which doesn't look like a very good pairing.

Damn that's the one I was looking forward to and hoping for.

Koscielny looks so timid, it's like he's petrified to be on the football pitch. Johann Djourou on the other hand looks a good player.

Our midfield has managed very well with Arsenal's slicker trio recently so I'm optimistic that we will acquit ourselves successfully on Monday.

I forgot about Djourou, when Vermaelen returns would you say a partnership between the two is Arsenal's likely long term CB pairing?

Probably, Squillaci's a squad player and I think TV is the aggressive ball winner whereas as Djourou is the physically powerful CB. Djourou looked as if he never kicked a ball when he first came back though so I'm still holding my breath.

Djourou seems a good athlete but hasn't he been pretty much injury plagued? a steady run may finally see him live up to the potential he has.

Rooney's dive. What a proud moment to be a United fan.

Indeed it was.

Beating the invincible but lost to half of europe, United & boro twice brigade was fun, certainly makes up for the battle of the buffet.

Whoever Arsenal play at the back i think Fergie will tell Rooney to bombard them, whoever they play with all due respect arnt very good, thats where i see this game being won, our defence is far better adept at dealing with their attackers than vise versa, A backline including any of Djourou/Squiliaci/Koscienly/Clichy/Fabianski etc is just asking to be attacked, theres a mistake in every one of those.

Thats why i still have a feeling Sir alex will got with both Berbatov and Rooney in this one, theres goals for us here if we put that defence under any pressure consistently.

You won't - you'll play Euro-formation with 3 CMs or a wonky 4231 with a Park or Giggs making 3 in CM.

It'll be 4-5-1. Or if you're into more details, it'll be 4-1-4-1. We'll have to match your team's formation or we'll be outnumbered in midfield.

If you want to be detailed it won't be 4141 nor 451. In domestic games you always play 4231 variants, and have the 2 nominal CMs in tandem, with 3 AMs and a striker. Depending on who you're playing the personnel deployed define how defensive/aggressive you're going to be.

I think we wont. It'll be Fletcher as a sole DM. Anderson, Scholes (hopefully he's fit), Park and Nani will make up the other midfielders. I think Fergie will not play both Carrick and Fletcher.

I didnt mean we'll go 4-4-2 more like we'll have a front 3 of Nani/Berbatov/Rooney and a midfield 3 of Fletcher/Carrick/Anderson, Rooney has been playing some of his best football in a long time deeper in these last few games, plus he was operating from the left side often in the Valencia match, id rather see him and Nani flank Berbatov than use him as a lone striker.

Arsenals strength is clearly their attacking players, the defence in my opinion is a clear weakness, hence target the weakness with a more attack minded selection.

Pete

Who worries you the most from our team?

D you expect us to be harder to beat of we play 4-5-1 like we did last time or 4-4-2 as we are likely to do this time round.

I have no idea who would SAF play nor what the formation will be
I am just glad most are healthy

I don't expect you to play 442 and Rooney is always the problem for me (and Nani as much because Clichy is a defensive liability these days).

Last time we played on the break and it worked - sharp fast breaks when you were attacking.

If Berba plays this time as I suspect we will play differently have more possession and control but play more controlled?

What you think Arsenal find the hardest to play against?

The team will look something like this on Monday (depending on injuries) IMO:

--------------------------- VDS -------------------------------

Rafael --------- Ferdinand ----------- Vidic ---------------- Evra

----------------- Carrick -------- Anderson -------------------

---- Nani ----------------- Rooney ------------------- Park ----

------------------------- Berbatov -----------------------------

Subs:

PIG
O'Shea
Hernandez
Scholes
Giggs
Smalling
Fletcher

It will probably be a 4-5-1 when having to defend and break up Arsenal's possession which easily turns into a 4-4-2 when attacking.

United never stick to a "rigid" formation anyway, we haven't got the FSW in charge remember.

Last time at OT you were largely outplayed and relied on poor reffing from Dean, poor goalkeeping from Almunia and a major dropped bollock from Diaby.

I'd say that the last two league games at OT against Arsenal weren't very good for us performance wise. I remember that we were outplayed in May 2009 and Fabregas hit the post in the last minutes. The game finished 0:0.

It's fair to say that we have found the right formula to play you at the Emirates but not at OT. Probably because it's easier to counter attack you in an away game.

That Wigan game, I think Anderson came on for (of all people) Nemanja Vidic who came off injured, of course, what we saw was John O'Shea who started in midfield going back into the back four, before he himself had to be replaced by Danny Simpson nine minutes later. Carrick, Fletcher, Hargreaves were all injured before the game began.

Anderson's second Premier League game.

Please tell me you looked that up? Remembering that level of detail from a game over 3 years (?) ago is just wierd.

Berbatov and Rooney will both play in this match. I'm pretty sure of that much. I think we could go in for a 442 but with Fletch on right and Nani on left.

VDS
Rafael-Rio-Vidic-Evra(or Fabio, if Pat is injured)
Fletcher-Carrick-Anderson-Nani
Rooney-Berbatov

Can't see that.

Park will play. His covering apart, his form recently has made him a vital player in this type of game.

It will probably be 2 out of Carrick/Anderson and Fletch, with Park and Nani taking up the wide positions initially. Personally I don't think you could drop Anderson at this stage

There is a good chance that we could setup as we did at Spurs last season(We played with Giggs, Scholes, Ando and Fletch) but since Scholes is injured, Carrick instead of him and ofcourse Nani will play.

 Evra has gone off on one again

tomwfootball

Patrice Evra had a pop at Arsenal on Canal+ last night, branding the club a "training centre" and mocking their lack of silverware.

Evra: "Arsenal, a big club like that, have won nothing for five years. For me, it's a crisis, it's ridiculous."

Evra: "People get knocked out by Arsenal's play, but in the end, what is there? There's nothing. No trophies, nothing."

Evra: "We really enjoy playing Arsenal - they don't play with 11 at the back. Difference is that we play football, but we also have power."

He's such a WUM! Should probably wait until after the game before mouthing off though, could come back to bite him (and us) in the arse.
