Manchester United vs. Ajax

The average age of our first 11 was 24... The oldest players on the pitch were Park, Young and Berbatov. What do you expect? It seems as though the fans expect us to win because we're Manchester United, regardless of the team we put out more than the players think that.

that should be the expectation.

Any team we put out should get the job done. Fergie does not send out a team that he does not expect to get the result.

We don't expect to win every single game, no club wins every single game.

But nobody can deny we've been very average in Europe this season. If we're to progress, we need to pull our socks up. Simple really.

Of course I don't expect to win because we are Manchester United, but I do expect them to care.

I don't buy this "job done, move on"; they switched off, let themselves down and surely must be aware of it, but it is becoming all too frequent that we just take that as part of the "learning curve". I have a lot of time for these players but that was very very sloppy.

It's not just about being young its sloppyness. Players giving the ball away needlessly. Between them all the players rushed for no reason, even the older players. I think it showed again the problem of fletched being out. We only have carrick who can be relied upon to provide proper defensive protection. I thought we should have brought in someone to address that but that's obviously not an option now. I'm not a fan on a midfield 3 but I think in situations where carrick isn't gonna play we should consider it more.

Average age for Ajax was 22. Only player older than 24 was their keeper who's 26.

of course United supporters dont expect we win every game. But we were sloppy with passing.

We don't expect to lose at home to anyone.

but lets also give credit to Ajax for coming at us

I think it is all about attitude. 1-0 up and they thought they were there. First half was pretty good. Second half they sat back. They got what they deserved. Nani was bloody awful. People try to compare him with Ronaldo, you can't. Ronaldp can pass the ball, he can run with the ball, he score goals, he can hit free kicks and he can damn well cross the ball. I wish he still played for us.

nothing wrong with sitting back..though I dont like to see it. But you need to have the discipline to do that.

tbf to Nani, he is coming back. He will never be Ronaldo, who is the best player we have had since Best.

Nani will get back to his normal good form soon enough.

that does scare me..us being so dependent on Carrick. Fortunately Cleverley and Scholes are available and Anderson is not too far away.

But the problem with all of them is that none of them are particularly strong defensively. They might work hard and be willing to track people etc but they don't know how to do it properly, well scholes does but he doesn't have the legs for it, we have to just hope we can keep Carrick fit and in form.

Carrick currently is the best DM in the league imo.

Ok, no doubt about that. But regardless my point was that none of our other midfielders bar fletcher are defensively strong so if we lose him as well then we have a problem.

The interview with de Boer suggests that he had the league more on his mind before the match. He said to Eriksen before the game that he'll only play him for 45-60min.
Some 19 year old came on at half time as well at left back.

If Ajax would have given their all in this match they just might have won it. Their play obviously suffered when Eriksen was subbed.

Thank god they didn't take the game seriously.

yep 24 - not 17. Anyone would think a player isn't ready for first team action until he's 28. Norman Whiteside starred in a World Cup at 16 or maybe 17. Michael Owen scored that goal vs Argies in 98 at what, 17? Of course you can't have a team full of youngsters but too much bollox about players being too young.

On a different note, or different era, it's amazing to think what the pre-Munich side would've done with two titles under their belt at an average age of 22.
