Manchester United vs Arsenal

:lol: Sorry mate but we are going to have to agree to disagree....him going down without any contact sure lessened the impact.

Rooney is one of my fav players and I said MU had got a bargain the day they splashed £25m on him but today he played the ref.

Of course he played the ref, it was a soft pen though not a dive... no contact? I must have missed something, utube somebody?

Or he could of jumped over the top... and missed hte keeper all together, saved any possible injury to himself and Almunia...

If a player takes a crack at goal and a defender tries to block the shot, and hte player who takes the shot then runs into the blocking defender, it is not a penalty... so neither is this.

jumping over when you see the keeper missed the ball and sliding towards you ,and you dont have good continuity on the ball ?

Nah, he gave the ball away far more than that. He's an industrious midfielder - running around putting pressure on the opposition is his forte not passing the ball around like Scholes.

I thought he was the only player on our team that looked like he could pass! Not saying much since Giggs wasnt that good first half and Carrick has lost his confidence in his passing...

So you're implying that the burden falls to Rooney to try and avoid Almunia's rash charge, and thus a penalty?

Nope, im saying whatever happens happens because Rooneys already fecked the ball away with his elephant touch. Like my example with a striker shooting and then running into a block attempt by a defender.

He hardly went looking for Almunia though - next time you're playing football you try running as fast as you can at someone coming at you as fast as they can, and then suddenly stop and avoid contact within the space of less than a foot.

bet you didn't then though
It doesn't mean anything.

If you had of asked me at the time i probably would have said its very unlucky... just how Arsenal were very unlucky, and its a dive, after not even a week of the Eduardo saga and everyone thinks its 'A' OK (not everyone, but most)

eh? ... I must say you're taking this well...

Exactly, or better yet... ignore the fact that he's there and run straight through him.

pity rooney did not twat almunias face in , so you lot dont moan about a dive that did not exist

Christofaux, I know you are looking for some objectivity from United fans right now, but this is definitely not the time for it. Imo, we got a lucky win. I will take it, drink some beer tonight and sleep. Comeback tomorrow and you may here some objective analysis.
Right now I and I am sure a lot of people here don't care.

Yes I suppose he could have kept going at full tilt instead of cushioning for impact. Of course that would have led to Rooney giving Almunia the same treatment that Hunt gave to Cech, and then you'd be on here whining about that.

The whining is inevitable, so i wouldn't bother trying to get me on that :P .

The interviewer on sky sports was an annoying knobhead.

fecking hell arsenal scored 20 seconds after not getting the penalty. Why bring it up? It hardly cost them the game you twat

Rooney's was clear cut. It's the extension of the arms by almunia - he had to win the ball then and he never did. Now we can put the burnley game to bed and say we're doing ok.

You mean Andy "three phones" Burton?! That guy is an absolute clown!

No idea what relaxed his legs means....like Bruce Grobbelaar as the penalties were being taken in '84 v Roma?

Relaxing his legs....please!

Think about it, maybe I'm not very good at explaining these things... It's a dive (ok I said it), but a dive to lesson the impact of a grown bloke clattering you in the legs... The key difference is the eventual contact.

Now that you've gotten me to say that I hope you're doing some kind of retarded victory dance...

Why would I? I'm pleased you won.

Forwards, and especially Rooney, get clattered all game long so contact with the goalie is nothing new for him....IMO the crucial thing which probably convinced the ref to give a pen was that Rooney touched the ball...after he had pushed the ball past the goalie Rooney will have known he no chance whatsoever of getting to the ball again and seeing Almunia coming at him he chose to go down.....it was a little early for my liking.

My first instinct was no penno, as the ball was off the pitch by the time contact was made. What happens if a defender twats someone in the box whilst waiting for a corner to be taken, would that be a pen? I don't know the rules well enough, but Almunia was daft to dive in & once he made contact a pen was on the cards with that ref. I don't think it was a dive though, it looked like Roon was trying to stop to me.

Anyway...shit happens! You win some you lose some - get over it :smirk:

p.s. Fair play to Wenger for his Jesus impersonation in the stands - time for the Paedo chants to stop I reckon.

Its a little bit of a gray area really. A foul in the penalty are is a penalty no matter where the ball is. However, goalkeepers are usually allowed to go to ground and challenge for a ball, which very often involves contact. In all the years I have been watching football today's penalty would be 50:50 just because the ball was unplayable after Rooney's touch.

Rooney didn't dive, he just did what all strikers are trained to do in that situation. He had little chance of winning the ball and beating the GK and defender, so he got a toe to the ball and let the GK take him out. The Ref saw it has a penalty at full speed from his angle, and that is all that matters. He could have deemed the ball unplayable and the contact incidental but is was definitely not a dive.

I am happy as a United fan, and I can see why Gooners are pissed.

I watched the game and have read all the posts and all i can say is, " Football, its a funny old game ".
WE WON 2-1 and we will play a lot better and lose, thats for sure. Game over, we have 3 points, the Arse have 0. If we had lost like that, i would be saying the same things.:)

 Christofaux is always worth a laugh in the football forums.
