Manchester United Vs. Aston Villa

I'm sorry but Evra didn't appear to throw a hissy fit the last final he missed, when Fabio who didn't really have a game played and Evra missed out. Both Evra and Rooney are proffesionals, neither started in the last League Cup final, if they're rested they're rested, "kick in the cnut" or not. I just feel it's better to have Evra come off the bench, rather than have him subbed.

Fabio did not start the league cup final last season. O'Shea did.

Of course he is a professional but it would be a pathetic way to treat him. There have been other, more viable opportunities to rest him. We could have rested him against West Ham, we could rest him against Wolves. Making him play every one of these games and dropping him come final day, what, in order to play Rafael at left back and Fletcher at right back? Insane.

Plus, considering we don't have any natural width on the left right now...it would be tactical suicide.

If we go for a 3 man midfield Scholes will start. The same formation we used against City at OT in the Cup, but with Park and Valencia for Giggs and Nani, and Vidic for Ferdinand.

technically its Aston Villa vs Manchester United. Im sure of it

It's not actually. I checked to see what kit we were wearing and we're wearing the home shirt, so I'm presuming we're mentioned first.

2-0

Looks like I'm going to lose my bet if what you lot are saying is anything to go by.

I just didn't/don't think Rooney will start this and neither should Evra

Prediction:2-1 win. Rooney, Berbatov

We don't need 3 in the middle for this against Villa IMO. Fletch along side either Gibson or Carrick should be able to handle the center. If they can't then we've got some serious re-thinking to do.

Villa are a good squad but, their midfield isn't that solid. Good players in there but, not strong/tough tackling and good at retaining possession.

If Villa play a 4-4-2 as many expect them to then we dont need to play 4-5-1 i dont think, any two from Fletcher/Carrick/Scholes should be more than good enough against Milner and Petrov.

Van Der Sar
Rafael
Brown
Vidic
Evra
Park
Carrick
Fletcher
Valencia
Berbatov
Rooney

Would be the 11 id like to see if we go 4-4-2, Rooney/Berbs and Valencia seem to work really well together id like to see those 3 start in tandem.

way to go, underestimate your opponents in a Cup final.

Milner has been one of the players of the season and Petrov has done alright against us this past few seasons.

This will not be an easy match. I'd like to see us play our strongest team.

Is Fabio injured?

Starting XI: ---------- Van Der Sar ----------------------
Rafael -------- Vidic ---------------- J.Evans -------- Evra
Valencia ----- Carrick --------------- Fletcher ------- Park
-------------- Rooney --------------- Owen -------------

Bench: Foster, Neville, Brown, Gibson, Scholes, Obertan, Berbatov

Is Diouf able to play in the final?
Yea

Not underestimating Villa at all, it will be a very hard game that much is obvious, i was merely backing our own in my opinion superior players to be good enough to deal with theirs if we go 4-4-2.

just like some here backed our players to tonk Burnley 6-0. Look what happened.

Villa players are good players in their own right and anything can happen on the day

Why Aston Villa will win the Carling Cup.....

No team ever retains
Twenty years have passed since Brian Clough and Nottingham Forest became the last manager and team to retain the Carling Cup. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that Manchester United have done the hard work by reaching the final and are now well placed to break the curse in each of the last two seasons, the reigning champions have returned to Wembley to defend the crown only to be disappointed, with Chelsea losing to Tottenham Hotspur in 2008 and Spurs then paying for their inability to score from 12 yards against Manchester United last March.

Martin O'Neill is Mr Carling Cup
Some of O'Neill's career highlights have come in the League Cup, having won it twice as a player with Nottingham Forest and twice as manager of Leicester. At Filbert Street, he ended a 33-year cup drought so, Aston Villa's 14-year wait for some silverware notwithstanding, last year's forgettable Intertoto Cup triumph won't be troubling him. In fact, O'Neill has won knockout competitions almost everywhere that he's been. He led Wycombe to FA Trophy glory twice, claimed two Carling Cups as Leicester boss and then won the Scottish Cup three times and the Scottish League Cup once while north of the border with Scotland.

Aston Villa have the edge in this competition
Aston Villa have won the Carling Cup five times to Manchester United's three, despite the fact that both teams have appeared in the final on seven occasions. The sides have collided at Wembley in the competition before, back in 1994, and on that day, Villa scuppered United's bid for a domestic treble by defeating a team featuring the likes of Steve Bruce, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Eric Cantona and Mark Hughes 3-1. The clubs have also locked horns in the FA Cup Final before, in 1957, and Villa came out on top then as well with a 2-1 victory.

The holders haven't beaten Villa all season
One of O'Neill's greatest achievements with Aston Villa, and it's taken him a while, is finally bringing an end to the days where United were guaranteed six points a season off the Midlanders. Prior to last seasons 0-0 draw at Villa Park, the Red Devils had won 14 straight clashes between the sides. Villa were also hugely unlucky not to leave Old Trafford last year with at least a point when Federico Macheda scored a memorable last-gasp winner. O'Neill then ended their 14-year wait for a league victory over the champions this season with a 1-0 win in Manchester, before they ground out a 1-1 draw in the return fixture last month.

Villa want it more
If the pitch invasion after the semi-final win over Blackburn didn't give it away, Villa are absolutely desperate to win the Carling Cup this season. United, on the other hand, only really got interested in the semi-finals because local pride meant that they wouldn't allow Manchester City to progress at their expense. In the round before, against Tottenham, they weren't taking it too seriously, with the likes of Ritchie De Laet, Darron Gibson and Danny Welbeck starting. Villa have fielded their strongest available team in every match and will do again on Sunday, whereas United will be prioritising tomorrows league game against West Ham, knowing that allowing Chelsea the opportunity to open up a six or seven point lead at the weekend, with just ten matches remaining, would potentially finish their title bid.

I dont really see the issue here i havnt once said it will be an easy game nor have i said Villa are a poor team, what i said was im confident in our central midfield to be able to deal with theirs should we match up in a 4-4-2, what part of that exactly has upset you? should i have said ive no confidence in our midfield whatsoever?

Villa are a good team and it will be a very tight game on sunday decided by the odd goal more than likely, however im confident our team is better and we can win the match, if you want to take that out of context thats up to you.

I'd like to see a strong line-up for this one. It may be the Mickey Mouse Cup, but it is a trophy and we need some revenge for them beating us at Old Trafford...

van der Sar

Rafael - Vidic - Evans - Evra

Valencia - Fletcher - Carrick - Park

Berbatov - Rooney

I think it'll go to extra time and Rooney will score the winner. :D

I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of people ranting and raving when the squad actually gets announced.

I hope so, because that means a weakened team. And that's what i want :)

Well some people consider fielding Park as a weakening the team. People are going to have different opinions on what a strong team is and if we don't play those players or formation, they'll rant away.

There's a difference between Park starting and the likes of Diouf, Gibson, Fabio/DeLaet etc etc getting a game.

I´m sure Carrick will start since he is suspended and after Andersons injury SAF will keep Scholesy as fresh as possible for the Milan game but whether or not that means he´ll be out of this one I don´t know. However my guess of his team-selection:

----------------------------PIG-----------------------------

Rafael----------------Vidic------Brown------------------Evra

Valencia--------------Carrick--------Fletcher-----------Park

---------------------Rooney----------Berba----------------

milan isnt next week
its the week after that .. scholes will get his break during the intl. friendlies

I somehow want this cup!

VDS
Rafael - Vidic - Brown - Evra
Valenica - Carrick - Fletcher - Park
Rooney - Berbatov

Get this cup home again!:devil::devil::devil:

We always play shit at Wembley!

-------------------VDS--------------------

451 if we play a strong team. If we rest some players i think it will be 442

A slight shake up. With the Milan game we could give Valencia a shot in the midfield with a striker dropping deep if we need another body

And diouf because of his pace. I think we need to give villa new things to think about.

I don't think we should experiment, and should play a strong line up with minimal changes. I'm fine with giving a couple of squad players a go as long as the balance is right and no spastic-playing-people-out-of-position stunts are pulled...it's a final ffs against opposition who have had the measure of us recently.

Losing this could really dampen our spirit for the Milan game

its the league cup
its a final
not sure how i feel about this

obviously winning it would be great , but i want to see the younger players get a chance to play in a final

hope fergie plays some fringe/younger players

that said , rooney will kill everyone if he isnt involved

My thoughts:

Play VDS, he needs game time, if not then PIG as a reward for performances earlier.

Rooney and Owen up front, Gives Owen some confidence by playing in a wembley final and Rooney gets the chance again to try and live his dream of lifting a trophy at wembley. Plus rooney can run round making things difficult for villa while owen just hangs are thier defence to try and break it up as they will be strong, especially with players like dunne.

Make the rest up of fringe players with maybe one experienced player in every area of the field so keep everyones heads down.

I was gone during the week and just watched the full W. Ham game. I've got to say Evra looked well off the pace. He really needs a break. Has played way to much and likely will play for France.

Fabio or Da Laet need to come in. It's too bad with Sheasy being out. Our weakest spot in terms of cover and been blessed God has been available all this time.

It's a final, but it's also the Carling Cup and the CL and PL have to be priorities... so I'd like to see something like:

PIG (a reward for his good form and to give Edwin a rest)

Rafael (Neville doesn't have the pace to deal with Young)
Vidic (needs playing time and we need him)
Evans (in the absence of Rio would like a settled CB pairing)
Fabio (Evra badly needs a rest and Milan is more important)

Valencia (deserves to play at Wembley)
Gibson (reward for his part in getting to final)
Fletcher (need some energy and experience in there)
Park (need someone to help combat Villa's pace and work rate)

Rooney (when he's in form you can't drop him)
Berbatov (played well against West Ham and needs to really develop that partnership with Rooney)

Subs: Foster, De Laet, Brown, Carrick, Obertan, Diouf, Owen

Its strange, a cup final that i'm not that excited about. After the semi's, this seems somewhat spent for me. I'm sure on the day i'll start getting the nerves etc, but at the moment it just seems anti climatic. At the moment i'd be happy if we fielded the reserves.

Yeah, I'd go with this. I can't understand people saying it's only the Carling Cup. What about momentum and morale? I'd love us to win this and propel the team on to a strong finish to the season.

If Villa put a 4-4-2 out there, than we should play the same formation. If they go for a 4-3-3, than the same for us.
In any case, we should play the strongest team possible. It's a bloody final. No experiments or youngsters. Hope SAF gets this right
