Manchester United vs. Bayern Munich

I think Fergie will see this situation as United just needing a 1-0 win. So keep things tight, and only bring on Macheda if we have not scored by the second half.

Personally, I think we need Macheda to stretch Bayern from the start. They'll be hard to break down if we let them settle early on by just playing Berbatov up front on his own.

Right, I think Scholes has been as poor as Carrick lately, if not poorer. Start Carrick with Fletcher as I think it's our most mobile midfield and will keep pressure off our defence more. Since we need to score, Valencia and Nani should both start IMO. Berbatov is an obvious starter, so the final position is the only one that needs to be debated. Who plays just behind Berbatov? Park, Giggs, or Scholes? I honestly can't see Macheda starting against Bayern. As for starting, I think Park will provide more pressure than Giggs or Scholes, so he should start. Probably Rafael over Neville as he's played so many games in a row now and if there's any hint of him becoming tired he needs to be on the bench, as Robben / Ribéry will just do him for pace.

I know we can do it, but I've got a niggly feeling that Bayern will sneak a somewhat undeserved draw in this match and go through - I just hope that's wrong. I want Vidic to get booked as well I think, so he misses the home leg against the French and is back for the away leg...

Going to go for an edgy 1-0, with Berbatov scoring.

At least there's goals and youth in that side, if were going to go out I'd rather we went out swinging.

My exact team. Hard running and skilful.

 You got precisely halfway there, why not finish?

Bastian likes it halfway.

He won't; Altintop will replace Robben, if the Dutchman fails to be fit on time.

Schweinsteiger's been playing central anyway, but they'll probably use Prajnic and Van Bommel in the centre to keep their lead so it's between Schweinsteiger and Altintop for the flank.

We can't sit back and counter attack. We have to grasp the match by the throat and attack right from the whistle.

This is what they will be expecting us to do. All we need is a 1-0 win. We cant go all out on the attack. We have to patient for the opening say half hour or so. We first need possession of the ball and control of the game. I dont think they are going to attack as much as they did back home. They will definitely get caught on the counter because Ribery and Robben dont track back well enough and Lahm also goes forward quite often.

I'm half glad i'm working as we need a big performance. We can do it! But not if we play like strangers. I hope we start bright and positive and Kiko will score. With what part of his body..well, it's hard to tell :)

I think 1 nil United

I agree, they'll be after the away goal to secure the tie, need the defence to be more alert and improved from recent weeks.

Bit to brave for SAF these days, maybe a few years ago....scrap nani and he'll play park

can you imagine the tension in the last 5-10 minutes if we were 1-0 up
It will be similar to the home leg semi against Barca in 2008 where even though we defended like Trojans, you were always wary of one flying in from 30 yards:nervous:...Squeaky bum time indeed but I'm confident we can hold out as we did then.

Where is all the confidence coming from???

20 odd years of success?

Not quite sure what to think about our midfield this game. Pretty surprised to see the number of times Macheda has been suggested to start. Sure the lad has scored a few important goals for us, but to put him in a starting line up in a do or die game against a tough opposition... It's asking a bit much from him.. But maybe that's just me. All I know is that Berba needs to perform well tonight, cos if he doesn't, people will definitely be calling for his head.

Manchester United v Bayern Munich: Wayne Rooney misses training; John O'Shea returns.
By Mark Ogden
Published: 11:20AM BST 06 Apr 2010

Wayne Rooney remains a major doubt for Manchester United’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich on Wednesday after missing an open training session at Carrington this morning.

But the Premier League champions were boosted by Irish midfielder John O’Shea training ahead of a possible first-team return – almost five months after sustaining a thigh injury while playing for Ireland against France.

United must overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit against the Germans at Old Trafford to seal a Champions League semi-final date against either Lyon or Bordeaux.

I expect Manchester United to beat Bayern Munich – but only just And Rooney, who suffered minor ankle ligament damage in the Allianz Arena last Tuesday, is battling to make a surprise comeback tomorrow night.

Although the 24 year-old was ruled out for ‘two to three' weeks’ by Sir Alex Ferguson just last Friday, his progress over the last few days has raised the possibility of Rooney making the bench against Bayern.

He has already spent time on the exercise bikes and water treadmill at Carrington since suffering the injury.

But although Ferguson is prepared to wait until the last minute for Rooney to prove his fitness, the player’s failure to participate in the 15-minute session in front of the TV cameras today suggests that he is still some way from being fit to play.

Ferguson has made it clear he will not jeopardise Rooney’s long-term fitness by risking him against Bayern unless he is convinced that the 34-goal forward is fit to be involved.

The injury sustained by the player following a challenge by Bayern’s Mario Gomez is not as serious as United first feared and, although the club are publicly insisting that the Manchester derby on Apr 17 is his likeliest return date, there remains a chance, however slight, that he could play some part against Bayern.

Ferguson is likely to give an injury update on Rooney when he holds his pre-match press conference at Old Trafford at 1pm today.

From the official site though:
Sir Alex says there's "no chance" Wayne Rooney will be fit to face Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Rooney won't be risked
06/04/2010 12:04, Report by Nick Coppack

Sir Alex says there's "no chance" Wayne Rooney will be fit to face Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

The Reds striker injured his ankle in last week's quarter-final first leg at the Allianz Arena and sat out United's Barclays Premier League clash against Chelsea on the weekend. Media reports had suggested he may make a quicker-than-expected recovery and run out against the Germans at Old Trafford, but Sir Alex quashed those rumours at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

The boss admitted Rooney had made "good progress" and praised the medical staff's "fantastic" work, but said he was not prepared to risk the 24-year-old so soon after he had suffered ligament damage. The soonest United fans can expect to see Wayne in action again is against Blackburn Rovers this Sunday. However, Sir Alex said even if that happens it will be as a substitute.

The Reds' top scorer may have been ruled out of Wednesday's clash, but the boss still expects goals.

"There could be a few," he admitted. "But a better performance than the one in Munich is vital. A good performance would get the fans and the players going."

Teenage forward Federico Macheda may be called upon to partner Dimitar Berbatov up front. If so, Sir Alex is confident he'll do a good job.

"He's a fantastic talent. We looked better with him on the pitch against Chelsea."

More to follow...

Just read this thread. F*** me there are some proper eejits on here. Crumpsall Red is right saying this is what the 80s were like (and the 70s as well). Those of you too young to remember have been spoilt rotten over the last two decades. Two poor games and you're all jumping ship! We've an away goal and we're at home. Have some faith.

Let's forget the players, tactically we need our wingers to cut to the center more like what Ronaldo used to do, lure the full backs to the centre and let our Full backs pop up in attack more. We were certainly lacking width in that first game and the Chelsea game as they closed our flanks too easily.

Latest news from the official site... same story.

Sir Alex Ferguson says he will not risk Wayne Rooney against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, despite admitting that the striker would be at his most pursuasive for a place on the bench.

Rooney injured his ankle in last week's quarter-final first leg defeat at the Allianz Arena and sat out United's Barclays Premier League clash against Chelsea on the weekend. Media reports suggested he may make a quicker-than-expected recovery and run out against the Germans at Old Trafford, or at least be named on the bench, but Sir Alex quashed those rumours at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Rooney has made "good progress" and the boss praised the medical staff's "fantastic" work, but he said he would not risk the 24-year-old so soon after suffering ligament damage. The soonest fans can expect to see Wayne in action again is likely to be against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, perhaps as a substitute.

Asked if Rooney had a chance of being involved on Wednesday, he said: "No. We have made some good progress with the lad. The medical team have done some fantastic work, but I'm not prepared to take a risk on a player that's not 100 per cent fit. We're looking more at the Manchester City game, or maybe Blackburn as a sub. The boy is making good progress, but it's an ankle injury. It's no different to any other ankle injury. I can't take a risk."

However, having ruled it out altogether, Sir Alex seemingly left the door slightly ajar when asked if Rooney even possibly make the bench. "I don't think so, no," he said. "He'll maybe talk me into it. But, no, it's a difficult one." That remark may well be analysed in the press, but it seems that if progress to the semi-finals is to be achieved then the Reds will have to do it without the prolific no.10.

Rafael ahead of Neville and Im happy. Neville is nowhere near fit enough to be competing against the quickest wingers in world football.

Agree with that team - I think it will be that or very similar to that.

Schweinsteiger played in the centre with Van Bommel at Schalke on Saturday and had a very good game, so I'm expecting that partnership tomorrow.

Good stuff, that would be a more open midfield without Pranjic, could be counter productive.
