Manchester United vs. Benfica

I thought we were good for a 20min period post break, but that's it. I think the younger players are costing us due to a lack of experience...whereas VDS, Rio and Vidic didn't make many mistakes last season.

So far this season, even against City and Liverpool, it was the senior players that didn't play the best of their games. The young players if anything have been exceptional this season.

We'll qualify.
Not really bothered.
Played some nice football. Carrick looked really good.
Head-to-head we are inferior to Benfica, who will beat Otelul at home in the final match. Even if we overcome the tricky trip to Basel, we will come second in the group.

Knockout-round meetings v Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern loom.

Thought we played well today but just switched off two times and allowed Benfica a foothold in the game. Not overly worried if we finish 2nd in the group, obviously it's not ideal considering the group we have and the teams we might draw but I'd rather be playing the Barca's and Real's in a two-legged tie early on in the draw. This is Europe, you'll have to beat them eventually. Today we have the attacking cohesiveness that had been missing admits all the recent defensive solidarity but that solidarity vanished today, hopefully we can mesh the two facets of our game together and start steamrollering some teams. feck me haven't we made a right old pickle of this group, oh well onwards and upwards!

Can anyone post the teams that are top of their respective groups right now so we know who we're likely to face should we qualify?

Thanks.

If we qualify it's either Barca, Real, Bayern, Inter or Zenit/APOEL/Porto.

(Assuming Benfica beat one of the worst teams ever in the CL)

key is to qualify.

we will do that.

not tooconcerned who we get.

we struggled to qualify in 99 too.

silly mistakes cost us today.

thought we did play well overall.

..and this Young's first game back.

stay positive lads.

And in 2008 we won five and drew one against Roma, Sporting and Dynamo Kiev, who are all better than Benfica, Basel and Otelul Galati. I don't see the relevance of our performance in the '99 CL to be honest.

And another battering in the process if we continue to play poor in Europe

Dont mind if we do. Realistically, we are not a yet a developed enough team to get to the final, let alone beat Barcelona just yet.

Bring em on for a 2 stage 2nd round game, give it our all, lose gracefully and CONCENTRATE on winning the league. The CL is a lottery winning bonus this season!

This side is SAFs last team and its being built in front of us. We cannot have dramatic success every year. Its impossible. Im loving see this new team develop, it brings me much joy to see DG, Jones, Smalling, Fabio, Welbeck, Young, Hernandez et al merging with more settled squad members.

If you know anything about team building, be it a football team or even in an office, building a new one takes time. There are so many new faces who all have thier own playing style peculiarities and styles AND we lost so much dressing room experience in the last summer ..... so the very character and nature of our side is fundamentally different from the squad that got to 3 of the last 4 finals.

I want PL no 20 (and an FA cup would be fun). We can then mount a serious attack for the CL next year.

Yeah I agree mate. Finishing second is annoying but as you said eventually we'll have to play the better teams. As you said the attack was pretty good after the team got settled, just some inexperience in defence that cost us.

I have a funny feeling we will win in Basel.. but Benfica will lose against Galati too?

You must be on smack!!

We might pull off a 0-1 in basle but benfica will twat galati on home soil!

We might well be going out of the CL early this year! If we do beat basle I don't see us beating Bayern barca Real! Fingers crossed we avoid them

ugh. Would have been nice to finish top but certainly don't see benefica losing their last game. We might just get a chance to play Barca over 2 legs. Is that a bad thing?

It's the pairing we had. Jones goes forward a lot, leaving a big void in his wake and Ferdinand is not as fast as he once was. I don't think Rio can be played with anyone but Smalling and/or Vidic because Jones just leaves too much for him to do and when Fergie brought Smalling on, I'd have switched him round with Jones to give Jones a bit more freedom to go forward without having to worry about a counter attack.

We have the better goal difference, why aren't we top?

Because it's done on head to heads on the two teams level on points. Benfica have scored two away goals against us in contrast to our one against them.

Let's hope we get Apoel Nocisia but based on this groups performance, I reckon we'd struggle against them too

We will draw in Switzerland, we will end up with Real Madrid in the next round, and lose 6-3 on aggregate. Ronaldo will score 4. You can blame me if this becomes reality.

Yeah Jones can leave his partner exposed, he's still got a lot to learn at cb. Def agree about putting him at rb and smalling in the middle. But I think the bigger issue today was the younger players at the back making poor decisions particularly with their passing at the back and some poor touches, that put pressure on us and cost us the second goal.
