Manchester United vs. FC Oțelul Galați

Cleverley, Giggs and Young all missed training.

From the official website:

10:47 Michael Carrick was among the notable absentees from my list below, but as the open part of the training session ended and we made our way back to our cars, the Reds' number 16 emerged to start limbering up. Sir Alex may be asked to clarify the situation with Carrick, and provide an update on injured players including Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley, at this afternoon's press conference.

So here's the training squad... with the three goalkeepers David De Gea, Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos working separately from the following 22 outfield players: Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Rafael, Fabio, Phil Jones, Nemanja Vidic, Zeki Fryers, Darron Gibson, Paul Pogba, Antonio Valencia, Ji-sung Park, Anderson, Nani, Darren Fletcher, Larnell Cole, Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Javier Hernandez, Michael Owen, Danny Welbeck and Mame Biram Diouf.

Fryers and Cole - do they normally train with the 1st team prior to a European fixture?

As much as it would be nice to continue to show disdain towards Europe's elite competition, we could really do with a good win. We need to kick-start some decent form again.

From the official website:

From that training squad:

David De Gea

Rafael - Phil Jones - Rio Ferdinand - Patrice Evra

Antonio Valencia - Darren Fletcher - Anderson - Nani

Wayne Rooney - Danny Welbeck

Sub: Anders Lindegaard, Jonny Evans , Fabio, Ji-sung Park, Paul Pogba, Dimitar Berbatov, Javier Hernandez

Reasons:

Possibly Lindegaard instead of De Gea.

Rafael should be straight back in.

Vidic is banned.

Although awful against City and out of the Everton game, I think Fergie will want Ferdinand's experience for this one.

It could realistically be any combination of Valencia, Nani or Park on the right or Park or Nani on the left.

Sadly Fletcher and Anderson look to be our only real option in the centre, Gibson would be a schock choice although could be ahead of Pogba for the bench.

Rooney is a must with a 2 man CM in Europe even if it's poor opposition at home, while I think Welbeck is the man of the moment and providing us with great link up play, he passes ball with his foot well.

Berbs and Hernandez offering different options off the bench with Hernandez offering great impact qualities.

14:07 Rio Ferdinand will play in place of the suspended Nemanja Vidic, following the Serbian stopper's red card in Bucharest. (AM)

14:00 Tom Cleverley is out of Saturday's game with Sunderland as well as the Galati encounter. Chris Smalling and Ashley Young are still sidelined but Rafael's back in training. (AM)

TBH I'm glad Vidic is missing here. There's bigger tests than this to come in the league and I don't want him picking up an injury in a game we will prboably win without him (you'd hope)

Larnell Cole and Zeki Fryers have been given Champions League Squad numbers.

Hopefully Fryers makes the bench.
would like to see Cole too, but there are plenty of fit midfielders, so that seems unlikely. we are a bit short on defenders

Flippin 'eck, I was about to start a thread for the Galati game.

Spoons...

didn't you here the huge sigh of relief you did not?

I reckon deep down the punters blamed me for our thrashing.

Worry not, I'll be back for the derby. Lightening can't and won't strike twice.

think if you put proper badges on this time and we do end up winning, we have identified the problem...

I was going for the minimalist look. Next time it's going to proper mental, though.

This game has a carling cup feeling about it.
Hope to see some of the young lads getting some playing time, a clean sheet and a couple of nice goals for us.

God, the group stages are a bore.

We can't afford to take this too lightly:

Not for me it doesn't, the players need to put on a performance at OT after the last display there and we cant afford not to win this match. I expect a strongish team and hopefully at least 4 goals

Not sure what kind of result I want in the Benfica-Basel game, maybe a draw. Want to win the group but the most important thing is to qualify.

Love those Galati fans they just had on Sky Sports News.

I think we'd be ok with more of a second string squad tonight. They've scored only one goal so far in the champions league and after watcing the first tie between us you can see why. They looked clueless in attack. I'd love to see a cameo from the likes of Morrison and Pogba, though it looks as though Pogba is the only one in with a shout as Morrison wasn't involved in the training squad yesterday.

Definitely a draw. A win with at least two goals difference for us would ensure we're top after tonight's game, with two games to play. We can then focus on beating Benfica at home, which would mean a point vs. Basel away from home on the last day would see us top the group. We could even afford a loss and still end up being second (with Basel winning the group if they manage to beat both us and Galati), because by beating Benfica we would've won the direct duel with them regardless.

So, two wins vs. Galati and Benfica and the table will most likely look like this (assuming Benfica and Basel draw today):

Utd 11
Benfica 8
Basel 8

= we're out of Benfica's reach.
