Manchester United vs. Fulham

Fortress Old Trafford to the rescue.

De Gea
Rafael Carrick Vidic Evra
Valencia Cleverley Anderson Nani
Rooney Hernandez

Subs Kagawa for Cleverley, and RVP for Rooney 60 minutes.

No thanks. A win is vital here, no point in messing about not starting our best player vs Everton or the top scorer last year. I want to see:

DDG
Rafael-Carrick-Vidic-Evra
Cleverley-Anderson
Valencia-Rooney-Kagawa
RVP

Valencia in a fixed position on the right wing, with the other three swapping around. We'll have no LW to hug the touchline, but Evra can provide the width while Kagawa/Rooney cuts in from the left.

Why the feck are we playing Carrick at centre back when we have fit players who were on the tour who play in that natural position?

It's fecking utter madness.

I suspect that the young lads aren't quite ready for first team football just yet. Tour or no tour, we know Fergie is patient with young players and you can't rush kids in too quickly.

No Kagawa to start with, he was superb on Monday!

So you'd drop our best outfield player from Monday night? You'd make a shite gaffer.

De Gea
Rafael Vidič Carrick Evra
Valencia Cleverley Kagawa Nani
Van Persie Rooney

I'd like to put in Evans and subsequently move Carrick to CM, and Kagawa to LW, but that ain't gonna happen.

Plenty quite keen to drop Rooney. Interesting.

If Carrick is in defence again I suspect we will see Cleverley, Kagawa and Andesron/Scholes in a midfield three.

Then Nani, RvP and Rooney up front. Nani and Rooney need to make amends for their performances on Monday and it's too harsh to drop them off the back of one performance. In my opinion.

Generally Rooney needs games to get up to speed. As much as his performance on Monday was awful, that would just delay him getting match fit and finding a bit of form.

Definately. He hasn't had that much of a pre season, had only appeared in 3 matches, so its no surprise he's not quite up to speed. Same applies for Nani actually. The 2 of them should start imo

So the whole team should just "suffer" until a player who only improves with games, not training sessions, is back to himself? Why can't e.g. Rooney improve from cameos?

I'd like to see:

----------------De Gea-------------
Valencia----Vidic------Evans------Evra
----------Carrick----Cleverley--------
----Nani-------Rooney-----Kagawa----
-----------------RVP-----------------

Kagawa might start on the wing to accommodate Rooney & RVP, but I hope he is given the freedom to drift in-field and play to his strengths like Silva does for City. I hope we don't try to convert him into a winger. Evra can provide the width down the left.

If we go with the above team I'd like to see the front-4 swapping positions and providing more movement with our attacks. In recent years we've become predictable and static with our attacks (eg. just give it to Valencia and let him cross it). The 4 attackers above should be given the freedom to interchange positions whilst Carrick & Clev sit back and protect the back whilst dictating the tempo of the game.

DDG

Rafael Vidic Evans Evra

Valencia Carrick Kagawa Nani

RVP Rooney

Agreed, if it doesnt work or Kagawa is needed further up then sub Nani for Cleverley and convert to 4231.

This.

Why drop Rooney? He needs to keep playing to get back his sharpness. The more he plays, the better he will be, we all know that. He's probably the last person in the team to get complacent and take his place for granted

What exactly makes you say that?

Indeed. I can understand being dropped through a perceived lack of effort, which is where Nani could be at risk. However, we all know that Rooney always gives 100% and it's just a case of getting his touch and sharpness back.

There's no doubt about it, SAFs solution to Rooney being out of form is to keep playing him till it stops.

it WAS the solution. that was because a poor rooney was still a better option than we had. with kagawa and rvp that is no longer the case.

--------------De Gea-----------------
Rafael-----Vidic----Evans-------Evra
---------Cleverley----Carrick--------
-Nani-----------Kagawa--------Rooney
-----------------Van Persie-----------

Kagawa needs to play in a position which can influence the game the most. We looked bereft of any sort of ideas and Kagawa is key to our success in the final third.

I'm not really saying that, am I? The point is that Rooney has never been the sort of player who comes back into form immediately after missing games. If we decide to make a point and drop him it might well work, but it will also likely delay the inevitable and stop him from getting the games he needs to get match sharp and develop a rapport with RvP. It's early in the season. A couple of games will make a big difference. Being at home will help too.

I would drop Nani before dropping Rooney -- but I'd also be fine with him starting. Personally, I'd prefer to see this:

de Gea
Rafael Vidic Evans Evra
Carrick Cleverley
Valencia Rooney Kagawa
van Persie

We might as well see how Rooney and van Persie goes, but dropping basically the only player who performed to a good level against Everton (bar de Gea) is madness. Kagawa should probably be the first attacking player on the team sheet for this.

It's so tough to decide our bench these days though, even with 3-4 defenders out!

Lindegaard
Buttner / M.Keane / Wootton
Scholes / Giggs
Anderson / Powell
Nani / Young
Welbeck
Hernandez / Berbatov

Probably something like that.

If Evans isn't fit, Carrick to CB and probably Scholes or Giggs to start. Although I'd rather see M.Keane thrown into it.

Nani and Valencia on the wings please.

Rafael at RB.

Carrick back in midfield.

Not too bothered about the rest.

De Gea
Rafael - Vidic - Evans/Wooton - Evra
Valencia - Carrick - Cleverley - Young
Kagawa
Van Persie

Hope we pick based on form. Or at least, not lack of form.

Then again, I actually think Rooney will play well if he's picked (as stated in the Rooney thread). But I don't know if Sir Alex would trust my estimations.

------------De Gea----------

Rafael-----Vidic---Evans------Evra

------------Carrick---Ando--------

Valencia-------Kagawa--------Rooney

-----------------RVP--------------------

Thought:

We need to shield the defense as much as we can without hindering our finishing touch. Valencia, Rooney, Carrick and Ando can all track back and win the ball while Rooney, Kagawa and RVP can all score goals.

Yep, I like this. I would always trust Rooney, even if he plays shit, to score (yes, obviously not on Monday)...
I do not have the same faith about Nani.
I think having Kagawa and Rooney behind RVP means they can roam wherever they want. We must stop this notion of the 2nd strikers having to stay in the middle or the left. Clearly Valencia will stay right (good) and Evra will augment the left hand-side.
It's a good team, and if Evans makes the game, I will be delighted. He's a very intelligent defender and for me should be ahead of Smalling and Jones when all are fit.

Cleverley can do just that, he gets about the pitch just as well if not better than any of our midfielders, gets his foot stuck and uses it better than most. Be harsh to drop him after he had a decent game last Monday.

The rest I agree with.

I'm sort of leaning towards trying one of the young players like Thorpe or Wooton at centreback. It's a home game where we should be dominating the ball and with Carrick being able to go back in the middle as a shield it should give us enough protection. If they look shaky then we can take them off. Suppose there's always the worry they'll do something stupid and get red carded, but fergie regularly takes that risk with scholes.

It's not ideal but these guys are a part of the team and sometimes you need to involve and give them a chance. Not much point talking about them or bringing them on tour if, when you have a crisis you won't even give them a go. If not then suppose Evra could go there, done it before, and maybe rafael to left back if the other guy isn't ready. Although be a pretty small back four and Fulham have some strong players.

Although it didn't exactly work for us, I can see pretty much the same as Monday night just replacing Welbeck for RVP.

Think it's a search for a river for me tomorrow.
