Might as well post it....
English Premier League
Date: 16/08/10
Venue: Old Trafford
KO: 20:00 BST/GMT
First fixture of the Premier league brings us an old rival who, after a year’s absence, is back among the best 20 teams of English football. Newcastle will want to upgrade their game from last season in which they won the Championship with overwhelming 102 points, and most definitely ruin the season opening for their rival, who want to start season, in which they chase their record 19th title, with a win. Newcastle manager, Chris Hughton, is surely hoping for a similar result from 2008, when likewise in a season opener at Old Trafford, two teams played 1-1. Looking at total score of these two teams in Premiership, Red Devils are a lot more successful – in 32 matches they won 19, and lost only 3, with 10 draws and goal difference of +33 in their favour. One of those matches that could be emphasized is a match played at Old Trafford in season 2007./2008., when the host enjoyed one of their biggest victories in Premier league, thrashing Newcastle 6-0, with all 6 goals scored in the second half (with Cristiano Ronaldo’s first hat-trick In red shirt).
Besides rivalry, two clubs are also connected by players who wore the shirts of both clubs. Most famous of those are surely Andy Cole, and Nicky Butt, who has represented Newcastle two years ago at OT as a captain. As of this summer, he’s no longer the member of the club, but his captain’s armband took another Ex-Manchester United player, Alan Smith. On our side, we have Michael Owen with the famous 7 on his back, who should be in contention for the game. Newcastle’s most famous shirt, the one with number 9, this summer was given to young striker Andy Carroll, who will be biggest threat for our goal. 19 goals scored last season is recommendation enough. On the other hand, we will expect the most from Premier league’s best player, Wayne Rooney, last season’s scorer of 26 league goals, and we won’t certainly mind if another one like this found its way in the net:
Regarding injuries, Manchester United will miss Gary Neville, Owen Hargreaves, Rio Ferdinand and Anderson, while Newcastle won’t be able to count on experienced defender Steven Taylor and ex-Red Danny Simpson. I expect a fierce encounter, maybe with not so many “nice” moves, it IS the first game of the season, but exciting game nonetheless, and as always – Manchester United win!
Expected line-up:
Van der Sar, O’Shea, Vidić, Evans, Fabio, Valencia, Fletcher, Scholes, Nani, Berbatov, Rooney.
