Manchester United vs. Rangers

I like it.

If i was making one change. It would be Evra. I don't think there is any harm in dropping him for this one. Just send him a message that nobody is irreplaceable. Keep playing like shit and you will lose your place.

I just don't want to see Gaz, O'shea or Evans in the lineup. Just don't trust them at the moment. I think we need to gives Scholesy and Berba a rest as well, so maybe try Hernandez and Gibson from the start and if we need them bring on the big guns.

Tough, if you're unhappy support Rangers then!

I would not rest Berbatov, he is playing his best football for Utd at the moment, so would like him to continue this good form!

Beattie relishing United trip

James Beattie is relishing the prospect of facing Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League next week.

Rangers travel to Old Trafford this week for their opening game of the group stages.

The 'Battle of Britain' clash - which you can see live on Sky Sports HD2 - is a mouth-watering prospect and Beattie admits that this sort of game is one of the reasons why he opted to move to Ibrox from Stoke this summer.

"The fact Rangers would be playing in the Champions League was obviously pointed out to me when I was signing. It was something that was very important to me," he told the News of the World.

"When the draw was made I was sitting with Vladimir Weiss and there were pots with Real Madrid, Inter, Manchester United and Valencia and we both said we would settle for any of them.

"To be playing Champions League football at my age is very good and it is something I am looking forward to very much.

"I played in the Uefa Cup with Southampton, then played and scored in the Champions League qualifiers with Everton against Villarreal.

"But we were knocked out in the return leg in controversial circumstances when referee Pierluigi Collina disallowed a perfectly good Duncan Ferguson goal.

"But going to Old Trafford in the Champions League will be that extra bit special

"I have played United there nine times now but I still haven't scored at Old Trafford, which has been pointed out to me.

"I've hit the bar a couple of times, once on my birthday, and I hit it again playing for England there - ironically enough against Liechtenstein.

"That England game was the only time I've won at Old Trafford. I played alongside Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen yet we were still drawing 0-0 with Liechtenstein after an hour.

"Fortunately we went on to win 2-0. Scotland discovered for themselves how difficult it can be if teams come and just sit in against you and make themselves hard to break down.

"It's something you probably see a lot at Ibrox and I'm going to experience for myself.

"I even heard a story about a Scottish team coming to play Rangers and setting themselves up in a 4-6-0 formation but I haven't seen that for myself yet!"

Beattie himself was once very strongly linked with a move to United, when in the 2003 season he finished as the top scoring Englishman in the Premier League with Southampton.

"I heard a few years ago, when I was doing well at Southampton, that Sir Alex was maybe having a look at me, but that was about it really," he continued.

"I think they went out and signed Cristiano Ronaldo instead!

"I was only a goal or two away from winning the Premiership's Golden Boot award that year so perhaps there was something in it.

"There was Ruud van Nistelrooy, Thierry Henry and then me all trying to finish as the Premiership's top scorer, so it wasn't bad company to be keeping.

"I went on to sign for Everton but I used to drive past Old Trafford quite a lot because I lived in Manchester, and still have my house there.

"I would always look across to Old Trafford and have a little thought to myself.

"I'm from Blackburn and a Blackburn fan. But when I was a youngster, Manchester United were always the biggest team and the one that you grew up in the playground wanting to play for.

"Then when you're older and have been playing football for a while, you can't help imagining it must be a special place to play your football."

I wouldn't rest berba, he was not involved in Euro 2012 qualifies, but i would certainly rest Scholes to keep him fresh for Sunday's clash,

another thing give the right back spot to da silva

Erm, isn't Rafael da Silva suspended for this for his sending off last season?

And the other da Silva seems injured at the moment.

As a rule, a player who is sent off the field of play is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. For serious offences the punishment can be extended to all UEFA competition categories.

21.02 In case of repeated cautions, a player is suspended for the next competition match:
a) after two cautions in two different qualifying matches, as well as after the fourth caution during the qualifying phase;
b) from the first match in the group stage, after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).
21.03 Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season.
21.04 Exceptionally, single cautions from the qualifying phase that have not resulted in a suspension expire on completion of the qualifying phase in question.
21.05 Cautions and pending yellow-card suspensions from club competition matches expire at the end of the season.

Well done Berlinknives.......hopefully Fergie knows that. :D

I don't have any official news other than that, but if United end up losing the game by default for an ineligible player, it would not only damage the start to the Champion's League season but it would upset morale going into the Liverpool game too.

My experience of watching Drogba getting suspended every time Chelsea fall out of this tournament makes me feel it is the case.

------------------ PIG -----------------------
O'Shea ------- Ferdinand -------------- Vidic -------- Evra
Valencia -------- Gibson -------------- Fletcher ------ Nani
---------------- Rooney --------------- Owen ------------

Bench: Amos, Brown, Evans, Scholes, Park, Macheda, Hernandez

We need Gibson to get playing time. We need him as an option this season, we're weak in central midfield.

I'd start Hernandez over Owen, but I think Fergie will want to give a chance.
I think Giggs and Berbatov will be rested.

There's no need to rest Berba.
He's having his best spell for us right now, scoring goals and always looking a threat. Plus he's just had a 2 week break.

So glad this game is so soon after the Everton one. Can see a much improved response, and hopefully Wayne will have a goal or two.

The biggest decision is Hernandez or Owen, for me. They are our backup strikers but they need games. Thing is, Berba is playing so well and Rooney needs to get playing again.

Going to this match, Rangers are shite.

Come on United.

I hope you guys don't think we run up a cricket score against them, rangers have nothing to lose, we cannot be complacent again.

Berbatov must absolutely not be 'rested' by any means can we end this luncay right now please, hes now quit international football so yesterday was his first game in 2 whole weeks, hes in the best form of his United carear (because of consistent matches ironically enough) and frankly we need him, hes in the peak of his carear age wise so what need exactly is there to rest him? stupid and totally needless idea.

Me and some mates have just made banners to put on the motorway between Wigan and Manchester..

Mine reads "Welcome back you horrible Hun animals"

There's loads more people who've done the same too. Apparently the motorway's going to be lined with Ireland flags as well..

As for the game.. I'm going for 3-1 United.

This has been proved to be the wrong tactic time after time. Get the job done then take off the big guns (although we thought we'd got the job done against Everton).

Owen might be a good pick for a European night, a hatrick from him might wake people up a bit (also if Aston Villa might really be in for him in January, up his value considerably).

Ok. I'd like to see:

Kuszczak
Fabio Ferdinand Evans Evra
Valencia Gibson Giggs Nani
Rooney Hernandez

I am, however, aware that probably only 5 or 6 of those will actually start.

Exactly. He's in the best form of his career here, he's scoring goals (4 in 5 games) and his overall game has been great. It would be madness to drop him. Keep playing him, his confidence is up and it's at the point now where I think he can score anytime he plays.

Even a shit team like rangers would rip through that central midfield.

We need to play our strongest team minus maybe Scholes.

A win against the huns is vitally important for the teams state of mind after dropping two points in the fashion that we did.

Yeh but i'd fancy that front 6 to outscore Rangers.

We'll win 6-3 with that team

Rafael da Silva won't play this game, so prepare to be upset as I don't see Brown and/or Smalling playing.

We probably would, but we'll be sitting so deep to protect our defence that your midfield won't be under much pressure.

Monday's Training squad:

Rio Ferdinand, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney, Ji-sung Park, Paul Scholes, Nemanja Vidic, Ryan Giggs, Dimitar Berbatov, Gary Neville, Javier Hernandez, Darren Fletcher, Darron Gibson, Jonny Evans, Anderson, Kiko Macheda, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Rafael, Fabio, Chris Smalling, Bébé, Antonio Valencia and Nani.

I didn't spot the goalkeepers - think they were working with Eric Steele elsewhere.

Today at Old Trafford - Manchester United Official Web Site

Missing players: Evra, Carrick (injured), Hargreaves (injured + ineligible), Obertan (injured) and De Laet (ineligible).

thats strange about evra - he didn't look injured when he came off after that poor performance at the weekend - i hope this French FA stuff hasn't affected him

i think we can afford to use the squad on wednesday - rangers are going to come and sit back and try and defend

be nice to see fabio and rafael getting starts

macheda deserves to play a part as well - he's been doing well in the reserves

Rafael's banned, but he's payed to train.

If Evra's out too, then we'll see Neville, Brown or O'Shea at rightback and Fabio or O'Shea leftback at a strech Fletcher rightback or Jonny Evans leftback.

what about Smalling?

Hmm, I was hoping that Evra was taken off just because of the mistakes he made and Sir Alex didn't want to risk his confidence being shot in the last few minutes, that could have cost us (albeit we got undone anyway). He must have had some kind of problem, it makes a lot more sense, anyway. I wonder if Sir Alex will start Fabio at Left Back and O'Shea at Right Back, or give Brown a game at Right Back and go with Fabio or O'Shea.. Or will Neville be given another game so soon? Personally, I'm starting to think this, now:

van der Sar
Brown Ferdinand Vidic Fabio
Valencia Fletcher Scholes Nani
Berbatov Rooney

The bench is more difficult..

GK: Kuszczak (Or Amos if Kuszczak starts)
DF: Neville / O'Shea / Evans / Smalling
MF: Anderson / Gibson / Giggs / Obertan
FW: Owen / Hernandez / Macheda

I can see all of these players having a shot at making the bench. I think it'll be a bit too soon for Bebe (but I'm sure he'd make the bench in a Group Stage game against Bursaspor) and I expect Park to be left out basically to start against Liverpool.

Anderson and Gibson are players I want to get on at some point, just to get them game time and to rest Fletcher and Scholes for Liverpool. But we can only do this if we have an established lead. Brown needs a game, so does Fabio, and so does Ferdinand. I don't think any of those weaken our side at all, with Evra possibly out.

In an ideal world I'd like Nani maybe rested, as well as Scholes and Fletcher (and bring Berbatov off...). But this is a game we need to win to kick off the CL in the right way. All the Home games are games we should be winning without too much difficultly but until we reach 10 Points we shouldn't be 'weakening' the side too much, no matter who we're facing in the Premier League the weekend after. The only time I'd like to see us play a weakened side is our last game if we've already won the group and we've got Arsenal in the League on the weekend right after.

I hope we dick the bastards. 4-0+

what about Smalling?

I don't think he'd be played fullback or that United would go 4-3-3, if they need to give him some time, he and Rio could have a half each, or they could play alongside each other and rest Vidic.

An O'Shea/Brown-Vidic-Ferdinand-Smalling combination would be quite funny against Rangers though, particularly in front of a Nani-Anderson-Scholes-Park;Owen-Hernandez forward six.

So much more than just a football game this.. Massively excited to get some revenge on this vile club.

Great to see their fans being penned up in Wigan all day. Penned in like the animals they are. Let's make this as shit a day as possible for them and send them back out of OT to their police escort on the back of a heavy defeat.. Can't wait for this one!
