Manchester United vs Real Madrid

We need to bring back the days of VidaRed with matchhday threads.

I think a lot of it will hinge on Jones' availability.

If Jones can play, SAF will play Rooney as the 3rd midfielder.

If its Carrick/Cleverley, I think SAF might be tempted to throw Giggs in as the 3rd midfielder and move Rooney wide.

-------------DDG

Rafael--Rio---Evans---Evra

-------Carrick---Jones

Nani-------Rooney-----Welbeck

-------------RvP

Or

Same back 5:

------Cleverley----Carrick---Giggs

----Rooney-----------------------Welbeck

--------------------RvP

I love Giggs, he's my favourite player ever, but starting him just off the striker would be weird when we've got Rooney AND Kagawa fit to play this role... better. He'll play his part off the bench though. Having Giggs in behind RVP and Rooney/Kagawa out of position would be totally stupid.

Sir Alex suggested he'd be "involved" in one of the two games. I don't think it's guaranteed that Giggs will start as everyone is making out.

As another poster has said, playing him behind the forward would be a strange decision considering Rooney and Kagawa today, playing him out wide with Di Maria to tame could be somewhat dangerous and playing him in CM against Madrid would frighten me.

Whatever the plan is, I hope it works out for the team but if its a case of sentiment (1000th pro game vs Madrid is as big as it gets), I hope it doesn't come at the expense of helping the team. I'd personally be game for him to come on as a sub in the second half on the wing or possibly start in an out and out 4-3-3 in a midfield trio, but I don't see us lining up like that.

Would it be harsh to drop Kagawa? I think it will be a straight choice between him and Nani on the left.

Fergie said he will look to stop their counter-attacking threat. With that in mind.

De Gea

Evans
Ferdinand
Rafael
Evra

Carrick
Cleverley
Welbeck
Kagawa

Rooney
van Persie

Yeah that would have to be the line up if Jones is not available......Would be interesting to see how Cleverley copes in a game like this if he is playing! He might be on man marking duties!

If Kagawa/Nani is on the left, Welbeck is on the right? I don't think he's played there yet this season.

I can't believe Vidic isn't playing. Then again, I couldn't believe Vidic didn't play the last leg.

We just don't look like conceding with Vidic in the side.

This.

I don't understand why Madrid don't just park Ronaldo on the right wing and fire crosses in from the left. He will be marked by Evra at least once and that's an easy goal for them..

The front 4 is quite flexible. You could even have Rooney take up a wider position and let Welbeck or Kagawa have some freedom in the middle. If you start with Nani, he can play either flank.

I think the players tend to swap a lot anyway, so if Welbeck does start off more to the right, it will unlikely mean he will be there for long periods. It's also a group of players who can effortlessly move into a 4-3-3. Especially if Kagawa does start.

Yeah I'm a bit shocked at Vidic not playing too. I would have thought that he was a certain for the 2nd leg if fit.

I do trust still Rio and Evans to get the job done. They were colossal in the first leg. However, I can't help but fear that Jonny still has the odd mistake in him. :nervous:

I can't imagie a better confidence boost going into this game than 2 straight wins against this Barcelona side.

Fergie on how he's going to stop Ronaldo:
“I’ve got a plan to stop him: it’s called a machete. Plan B is a machine gun!”

I agree, it's not like Vidic hasn't been playing well at CB, and of all our CBs we give up fewer goals with him on the pitch than with any other CB (besides Jones who has only played 3 games at CB).

Barca are nothing like United at Old Trafford though, our playing style couldn't be more different. I'm not saying we're a better team, but we sure as hell are in the better form and it would take some performance from Madrid to beat us at home right now IMO.

You better hope you're players aren't too overconfident after beating Barca twice. You may just get a big wake up call if that's the case.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking aswell.

I don't think Madrid will be overconfident. We played them at their place recently and gave them a game, playing better than Barca have been recently both times.

Too close to call this game. Nervous as hell.

I hope we go with:
De Gea
Rafael
Evans
Rio
Evra
Carrick
Cleverley
Kagawa
Rooney
Nani
Van Persie
Maybe that team isn't as good defensively as others we can put, but it's sexy as hell.

I can see Fergie surprising everyone again by this lineup:

.............DDG...............
Rafael....Vidic...Rio...Evra
............Carrick............
...Cleverley....Anderson..
............Kagawa...........
.......Rooney...RVP.........

----------- DDG -----------
Rafael - Vidic - Evans - Evra
---- Carrick - Cleverley ----
Rooney - Kagawa - Welbeck
----------- RVP -----------

Nani/Anderson/Giggs/Valencia to come on, depending on the game.

Anderson? He doesn't deserve to start a game, especially with the likes of Welbeck, Giggs and Nani in form for us of late.

Rafael gets a severe mugging in that set-up.

Got to attack them.

Lindegaard; Smalling; Anderson, Giggs, Valencia; Welbeck, Hernandez

I wouldn't mind Vidic starting or being on the bench if he can manage it, but if there's any risk we might as well just stick to playing him once a week. He can play against Chelsea instead. Smalling to make the bench if no Vidic, unless Jones is fit then I'd rather him on the bench as he can double as a RB or CM as well as a CB. I think Giggs will come off the bench rather than start, as the crowd will lift not just him, but everyone when he makes that 1000th appearance (I just hope we're not two goals down by then). Valencia may still start on the wing to help deal with Ronaldo, but I wouldn't mind giving Nani a go and subbing on Valencia instead. Welbeck may also start in a wide position but again I think that's a change we should make during the game, not start him.

Going to be too close to call, I can see a 2-1 or 3-2 either way. The worst result I can see is a 2-2 draw, which would just be the most heartbreaking result (and it's quite a likely one IMO). :(

Nervewrecking 90 mins infront of me. Not feeling too confident or too good about it, no idea why really

Our defence will have to be on the ball. 4 cleansheets on the bounce is fantastic so hopefully it'll give the whole team a big confidence boost.

Stop Ronaldo, and we won't concede. Rinse and repeat. Easier said than done of course, but it's possible.

We should have won the first leg. Varane could have potentially been sent off, RVP uncharacteristically missed that 1 on 1 and Giggs could have done better when the ball fell to him in the box. I think we're being underestimated here. It'll be the toughest game of the season yet, but I think we'll do the job.

The season will be too boring if we get knocked out. This squad of players deserve to go further than the last 16 of the CL.
