Manchester United vs Real Madrid

So without Jones (If we are) will SAF still try and man mark Ronaldo? Or will he tell the defenders to keep an extra eye overall?

I want Jones starting tbh. Need someone athletic enough to stop them countering and track their diagonal runs towards the center.

Cleverley won't be able to do that. He'll play further forward.

Casillas back in time for this one, typical.

I'd happily take something very similar to the first leg actually, so:

De Gea
Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra
Cleverley, Carrick
Rooney, Kagawa, Welbeck
Van Persie

If Jones had of been fit then I'd of had him in again. Welbeck worked his ass off in the first leg and also scored a goal, think it's possibly a toss up between him and Giggs out on the left, possibly even Young at a real push, though I'd go with Welbeck for his pace and work rate. Cleverley is a must start if Jones is missing and Kagawa is our best player with the ball, so for me it's crucial we get him in there.

Still think we'll do them. I'm going with 2-1. If it goes to penalties I may need a heart transplant.

I thought he didn't train/fitness issues?

He missed the training session in front of the media, but it could be Fergie will be trying to keep Madrid guessing about who is injured or not for the game.

Lopez did a great job for them. Casillas coming back could be good news for us, he's very suspect in corners and hasn't played for a long time.

Casillas won't play against us. Anyway, Lopez is sloppy on corners too and has made some errors including the weekend before the last one.

Even against us he didn't look that solid.

Cuneyt Çakir from Turkey, the referee. Apparently has a reputation of blowing for fouls and booking people. But is reluctance to send off.

Hopefully, he is better than the German plonker first leg.

I have a feeling Vidic will start and the whole managing knee thing was to throw a massive curveball. Why else would we so willingly offer such a display of possible weakness bang in between the two games?

Is there anyone on our team who's a yellow card away from missing the next round? I've had a brain-fart and forgot the rules of suspensions in the CL. I blame it on the fact we went our early last season and so I didn't need to think about it.

Why is Evans not training with the team?

According to Yahoo, Robin van Persie and Rafael will miss the next round if they get a yellow.

For Madrid, Alonso and Ramos are 1 yellow away from missing the next game.

Well the title under the picture says:
Jonny Evans sits out Manchester United's training session this morning

So it got me confused..

Ah right, I thought you had deduced that he wasn't training with the team from the fact he was on the training pitch, in full training kit, sitting amongst some footballs...

RVP, Rafael and Valencia for us, i think. Ramos and Alonso for them.

Thanks! I'd say Rafael will probably miss the next round if we progress then. It's not definite that he'll get a yellow card, but when you're facing Ronaldo, there's a good chance you'll get one

I've tried to google this next question, but surprisingly it doesn't give me solid answers. When do yellow cards in the CL get rescinded? Is it after this round, or after the quarters?

My preferred lineup, all things considered...

-----------------------DDG---------------------
------------------------------------------------
RAFAEL-----FERDINAND------EVANS--------EVRA
------------------------------------------------
---------------------CARRICK-------------------
----------CLEVERLEY---------GIGGS------------
------------------------------------------------
--------KAGAWA------------------ROONEY------
--------------------VAN PERSIE-----------------

Wingbacks to provide the width (in turns), Cleverley to take on a little less attacking role since Jones is out (?).

Who is marking Ronaldo's diagonal's cutting in or from set pieces in that team ?

Carrick and Cleverley to a lesser extent, we don't really need to make explicit plans for anybody imo. We're at home and one of the most dangerous teams in the world, they have a fair few issues to worry about themselves. Rather than assigning a player to Ronaldo, as the manager I would tell everybody to press Ronaldo that bit extra with support.

We are not assigning anyone to mark Ronaldo, but when we attack we need a athelete who can bust a gut to prevent their main threat. Quick counter attacks.

If we can deal with that and the diagonals through the middle then we have removed their main 2 threats. Carrick isn't a athelete while Cleverley likes to play further forward.

See what lack of protection did to Arsenal yesterday against Diagonals from pacy wingers. Plus Jones helps with pressing as well.

And what about Set Pieces ? If they start with Ramos, Pepe and Varane at the back along with Ronaldo and Khedira we need some better headers in the team too as due to the wing threat like us they win corners on the counter.

Jones did extremely well in that department against Ronaldo too.

I am starting to get giddy now, love the feeling of big games! I think we are in for an absolute classic reckon we will have to come from behind but i believe we are going to win.

Old trafford should be rocking, it will be class!

-----------------------David De Gea-------------------------

---Rafael----------Ferdinand-----J.Evans-------------P.Evra--

--------------------M.Carrick---Cleverly-------------------

----------Wellbeck---------Rooney-----------Kagawa-------

------------------R.Van Persie-----------------------------

Subs: Lingaard, Vidic, Hernandez, Giggs,

I'm not sure what we'll do to counter Ronaldo if Jones is out. None of our other midfield options are anywhere near him from a defensive point of view. The only other tactic I can think of is asking Rooney to try and negate him like he did against Walcott in the CL semi finals.

Type of game you need Park from a year or two ago really what with Jones probably missing.

I want to see something like..

------------RVP----------

Rooney---------------Nani

----------Kagawa----------

---Cleverley-----Carrick---

I think that line up is fairly likely.

If we start Giggs tomorrow, he'll only come off if it's a certain we won't go into penalties. We'll need his composure/experience when it comes to that stage, so if the score is 1-0 or 1-1, or 0-1, I can't see him coming off.

I'm well up to see him start. He's committed defensively and you just know that he'll make some chances for us.

Very difficult to predict the line up for this one. RVP is certain. Rooney should be.. despite some article today suggesting he might be left on the bench. Kagawa just scored a hat trick and started the game against Madrid previously so I can't see him being benched. Welbeck was great in the first leg and came off the bench for Norwich, so it seems like he must be starting.

--------RVP------
-Welbeck--Kagawa---Rooney-

Don't know where the three behind RVP will start considering Fergie used Welbeck behind RVP in the second half of the Madrid game.

Will Giggs start? He didn't play against Norwich so maybe. But would that mean he'd start in a 2 man midfield with Carrick? Unless one of the above four are benched.
