The tactic is to have him hold the ball up and release welbeck.
Persie hasn't been anywhere near great. He's had some nice touches and held it up well tonight, but certainly not at his best. Same in the first leg, him at his best he'd of had a goal that night. In fairness, he has done a job defensively on corners. Not putting him down, he's been good, just not at his best. World class though, so he's capable of a moment of magic at any stage.

Well that was quite encouraging. We've stuck to our gameplan superbly. But we really need to find a way to score first in the second half. It will swing things massively our way. Giggs, Nani and Welbeck have looked quite threatening going forward. Van Persie needs more service to shine.
What a Half. Completely went the way we wanted. Madrid not looking threatening at all. We've clearly had the better chances. Rooney coming on for welbeck around the 60' mark will only cause more headache to them. We have a decent grip on the game. Half the job done. Cmon!
