European Champions League Group Stage Match
Old Trafford
KO - 19:45

Tight game, 1-0, maybe 2-0. ;)

You missed the date of the match, poor effort ;)

I hope to see Carrick and Hargreves partnership,i no its cheesy but scholes didn't play agasint roma in the 7-1 thrashing and hargreves instead of flecther is a better choice.Scholes is more of sitting and dictating the play midfielder type and agasint roma we'll need mid's willing to run with the ball a few yards instead of going backwards.I'd also like to see Anderson get a try at Left midfield with rooney and saha upfront.

Roma injury worries for Old Trafford Sunday 30 September, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alberto Aquilani and Simone Perrotta are injury doubts for Roma’s trip to Manchester United, while Edwin van der Sar is out of action.

The Old Trafford grudge match on Tuesday evening is the first time these two teams have met since last season’s 7-1 result and the Giallorossi have been hit with a series of blows in the lead-up.

With just two points from their last three Serie A games, they were drubbed 4-1 by leaders Inter at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday after Ludovic Giuly’s dismissal.

To make matters worse, Perrotta pulled up with an injury during the final minutes and Aquilani was unable to step on to the field at all.

“Alberto needs to be evaluated. He still has some very sharp pain and could not even go on the bench,” explained Coach Luciano Spalletti.

“With Perrotta we need to see if it was just cramp or a muscular problem. We will look into the situation.”

It would be a bitter setback for Perrotta, who was born in Ashton – just outside Manchester – but also missed last season’s visit.

The Giallorossi are already without Rodrigo Taddei, Marco Cassetti and Marco Andreolli.

Manchester United also have injury worries, as goalkeeper van der Sar is sidelined with a toe problem he picked up during the 1-0 Premier League win over Birmingham.

The former Juventus shot-stopper will be replaced by Poland’s Tomasz Kuszczak, making his first Champions League start.

"It is very hard for him behind a player as good as Edwin and he has had to wait for his opportunity, but we are very confident in his ability and we have no worries,” insisted assistant manager Carlos Queiroz

2-0 Tevez and Rooney

PIG
Wes, Rio, Vida, Paddy,
Ron, Hargreaves, Carrick, Giggs,
Tevez, Rooney,

Subs Heaton, Saha, Scholes, O'Shea,
Pique, Eagles, Simpson,

3-0 Utd, Rooney, Tevez & Saha with the goals, all set up by Giggs.

I just hope Hargreaves is fit, as I think we'll need his energy in what will be a packed midfield.

This is the team i'd LIKE to see..

Very unlikely to see that team, but i reckon that team is our future, and is the most balanced we can field in terms of defence and attack. Any substitute with the front 4 would weaken our attack i feel, that's our best 4 attacking players, and with the midfield 2, i went for Carrick and Hargreaves to accomodate for the attckers ahead of them ad keep it shored up in the middle.

Fergie probably won't go out to attck as he's scared of European teams, but at Old Trafford, it's a possibility.

My Favorite team would be

-------------Kuzczak---------------

--Brown-----Rio------Vidic------Evra---

---------Hargreaves--Carrick------------

--Anderson------Rooney---------Tevez---

----------------Saha----------------------

Unlikely it'll happen..... although Ronaldo has been our main threat,i'd like to see united play like a team with everybody working for eachother, running into spaces, quick movement and fast passing....

The important question this season will be has Fergie got the BALLS to play the united way or is he too scared of losing ???

VDS is a big miss. We need to be at it defensively as PIG could be a weaklink. Sure he did well against Birmingham, but this is a different kettle of fish and he has not always convinced. The backline in general needs to be more decisive and rid themselves of the dithering that was almost costly on Saturday.

I think SAF will set the midfield up in the same way as he did when we beat them last time. Of course, we can consider Hargreaves an upgrade on Fletcher and hopefully we will see Scholes released as a result. Talk of dropping the Ginger Prince is trivial as he (more than anyone) has the precision needed to open up top defenses.

Giggs likes the European stage and his experience should see him get the nod. Expect fluidity amongst the front three with Tevez and Saha ready to come off the bench if needed.

Their appetite for revenge and the fact that they are probably a better outfit this season makes it a tough game. A draw would not be a disaster, but to set a marker a win would be nice.

I would LOOOOOOVE to see that line up and IMO a perfect balance between defence and attack - with Roon, Ron and Carlito chopping and changing we should tear Roma a new arsehole!!!

Giggs looks like he could do with a bit of a breather and so having him and Scholes on the bench would be no bad thing - by all means bring them on if we need some wise heads out on the pitch.

Where is Anderson? Where is Nani? Scholes will start.

Must admit I got a bit bored when I got to the subs & forgot Nani & Anderson:wenger: I'd replace Simpson with Nani & Eagles with Anderson. I wouldn't normally leave Scholes out, but Carrick played a blinder against these last year when Scholes was banned & I think we'll need Hargreaves energy.

feck feck feck i'm shitting my pants when I think about all the good feelings these CL qualifiers give during the autumn. HOLY SHIT, WE'RE GONNA BEAT THEM ONCE AGAIN!

soulblight3r, Jacob,

Each to their own as far as presentation goes eh. ;)

So, realistically, how do we all rate Hargreaves' chances starting on Tuesday? If not for his v.good performance in our early matches despite having no real pre-season and time to gel with the team on the pitch, i would have said the likelihood would be slim, but now...you never know.

And i am as frustrated by our over cautious measured approach away from home in Europe as anybody, however at OT we leave our fears or nerves or whatever they are behind. Our traditions and footballing values come to the fore, so whatever be the outcome, we'll see some intensity and attacking spirit from us.

2-0 Tevez and Rooney

I think thats how we'll line up but don't know about the scoreline.

I predict another 1-0 which will be nerve racking to watch again.

And onto the trash-talking...

Defender Christian Panucci said: "The first match generated so much controversy and United then profited from these circumstances by doing all they could to create a totally unjust atmosphere against us.

"United deserved to win, but some of their players abused this superiority. We see this as an opportunity to exact revenge. I have never suffered on the field like I did that day last season."

Totti, 31, revealed that since the two teams were paired in the same group the Italians have been thinking of their return to the Theatre of Dreams. He said: “We want a great and beautiful revenge. We have all been thinking of the game after what happened last year at Old Trafford. It was a complete disaster.”

Totti admitted Roma’s capitulation at Old Trafford took him a long time to get over.

He admitted the cocksure Italians were complacent after dominating the first leg when United were lucky to escape with a 2-1 defeat.

Yet Roma were so thoroughly outclassed by Fergie’s side in the return leg they were fortunate to go back to Italy without a double-figure scoreline against them.

United wasted scores of chances to make the win even bigger. Totti added: “I felt gutted and depressed.

"Losing in the way we did was hard to take. We were convinced we would go through to the semi-finals.”

This time around Totti reckons it will be a different story as Roma will be at Old Trafford as one of the favourites to win the Champions League.

He insisted: “Now Roma is a cynical team, a very competitive one, a very strong side that could go all the way. We are among the favourites and rightly so.”Roma’s new Brazilian star Cicinho confirmed last season’s result was still having a major effect on the Italian side.

Defender Cicinho — who joined from Real Madrid — said: “Obviously, the name Manchester United chokes in everyone’s throat here.

“Roma should have beaten United by a large margin in the first leg but paid for it by having the worst night possible in the second leg.”

Despite their strong start to the season Roma come to Manchester after a 4-1 mauling by Serie A champions Inter.

Though they played with 10 men for most of the game Roma showed the defensive weaknesses they had last year. But that result was dismissed by midfielder Simone Perotta.

He said: “Of course we’re not afraid of United. We have a very strong side.

“This is a new year, we know what to expect and we have to show we are capable of competing. The result against Inter was a bad one but we were a man down so it was difficult.

“We are going to Manchester and I am certain we will play with the confidence of the great team we are.

“Of course we know what we have to do different and we have to be fully concentrated as United have great players.”

i can't fecking wait!!!!

Whoever plays on the left, I hope he burns that Real reject Sissyho for the crap defender that he is.

Yup in an ideal world.. There's no doubt with scholes we'll be more solid and efficient but Anderson provides that extra spark and dizzle which will be more entertaining, note that i said in an ideal world.

Hopefully it will be the rest of Europe soon. We have a good enough team.

Anderson hasn't looked nearly ready to step up to the first team yet he still doesn't look match fit.
Dropping Scholes for Anderson would be a crazy move

Though form and logic will suggest that 11, I believe Fergie will pick Scholes ahead of Carrick for his experience, especially seeing our other experience CL campaigners - Giggs & Gary are both unlikely to start (or feature in Gary's case). The other possibility is Scholes in place of Saha for a midfield trio, with Rooney upfront alone.

Those of you leaving the best midfielder in the world out of your team for tomorrow (Scholes obviously) need yer heads examined !!!! VDS is deffo out and while I'd like to see this :

I saw Roma vs. Juve which was probably the most entertaining game I've seen this season.

Juve went all out with three attackers, Del Piero, Trezeguet and Iaquinta which caused Roma a massive trouble at the back.
However Juve's midfield and more importantly their defense is weak so Roma had no trouble in attack either.

I believe we have the midfield and defense to match Roma's attack so a three men frontline would be great to see.

Therefore...

PIG
Brown-Rio-Vidic-Evra
Carrick-Hargreaves-Scholes
Ronaldo-Tevez/Saha*-Rooney

In case Hargreaves is not fit, O'Shea could do the job.

Roma doesn't possess great threat in width but with Evra going forward a lot it, of course, could be a weak spot.

Its all about tactics. Considering that we are playing against a physical side who would relish to see one of our players see red then Id rather have 2 hardworking midfielders that can actually tackle rather then play with brilliant midfielder who wont give a good tackle even if his life depended on it.

I hear you, but I don't agree. Any tactic that sees our best player sitting it out ain't a clever tactic IMO
