Saha set for bench place

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Louis Saha could be on the bench for Sunday's must-win clash with Tottenham at Old Trafford.

The French striker has not played since the Champions League semi-final defeat to AC Milan on 2 May because of a knee complaint which resulted in surgery over the summer.

Saha has now completed two full weeks' training and is in contention for a spot on the subs' bench this weekend.

"With Louis Saha we’re hoping we can get him on the bench, but it depends on how he comes through training on Friday and Saturday," admitted Sir Alex Ferguson at his pre-match press conference.

"Nevertheless, we are hopeful, he’s done very well in the last two weeks. There is some light at the end of the tunnel there.

"He is an out-and-out front player," added the boss. "He has pace and power and at the start of last season he got close to fifteen goals. If he had continued playing all season he could have hit 30. So that was a big loss for us in the second half of the season.

"We just never got him back on the field with the combination of his hamstring and knee injuries. But he has been doing well in training in the last two weeks and if he does come back then it is a big boost."

Meanwhile, a scan has shown there is no damage to Edwin van der Sar's foot meaning the Dutchman is fit to start Sunday's game. The 36-year-old goalkeeper picked up a knock in training whilst on international duty for Holland earlier this week, but Sir Alex confirmed his No.1 stopper is okay.

There was more good news for the Reds after confirmation that both Owen Hargreaves and Anderson are fit. Hargreaves sat out England's friendly defeat to Germany because of tendonitis, while Anderson missed last weekend's derby loss with a hamstring strain. However, both are available for Sunday, with Hargreaves likely to start.

Gary Neville's bad luck continues with the news that he will be out of action for a further two weeks after picking up a thigh injury in training last week.

The Reds' defender has been missing since the middle of March after initially injuring his ankle. An operation followed in May from which he made a full recovery. But in doing so, he suffered a calf strain, before picking up his latest knock much to his and Sir Alex's frustration.

"Gary trained this week but he got a thigh strain, which will rule him out on Sunday," confirmed the boss. "It’s a kicking strain and I think he’s just overdone it a little bit.

"It’s a frustrating one. He did a bit of extra work after training and picked up a small thigh injury. It will probably keep him out for two weeks. It’s frustrating because he’s been doing so well in training."

Looking gooooood........ I just hope were not rushing Hargreaves back to soon - he needs to be 100% fit.

Ps I told you all we'd be seeing Scholes 'in the hole' this season!!

3-0 Utd. Meaning Jol's future in doubt. Tevez, Nani, and Giggs with the goals.

FERGUSON PREDICTS FIRST WIN

Sir Alex Ferguson has boldly declared Manchester United will gain their first victory of the season against Tottenham.

With two draws and a defeat from their opening three matches, the Premier League champions could find themselves in the relegation zone by the time they face Spurs on Sunday.

While no one expects Ferguson's men to remain in that position for long, the United boss has already claimed his men face an "uphill battle" to retain their title.

Having already fallen five points adrift of new championship favourites Chelsea and seven behind surprise early-season pace-setters Manchester City, Ferguson knows his team cannot afford to falter again.

The Scot recognises Tottenham will be difficult opponents, probably nursing a sense of grievance over the treatment of their manager Martin Jol. Yet Ferguson is convinced United will ultimately emerge victorious.

"We will win the game on Sunday," he said.

"Our performance level will win the game for us.

"There is no question Tottenham will come here with a great determination to help their manager.

"But with the ability in this team, I know the results we have been having will not carry on for long."

Given the performance level United have reached so far this term, Ferguson can barely believe the meagre points tally they have amassed.

Although last weekend's Manchester derby ended in defeat, in every aspect of the game - other than the goals column - the Red Devils were totally dominant.

"City did not even get a corner," Ferguson reflected.

"Has there ever been a derby game in history where the home side did not win one corner?

"I am perfectly aware winning is the name of the game, and we do not like losing. But everyone played with great intensity and commitment, and their passing was excellent. It was just the finishing that let us down.

"You just have to ride along with it. There is no point me deserting players who have proved their ability at the top level of the game.

"So, what is the issue? The issue is that - because we are not winning games - there is a different slant on everything. I understand that."

A win for United would merely pile more pressure on Spurs boss Martin Jol, whose future at White Hart Lane has come under intense scrutiny this week amid reports that Seville coach Juande Ramos had been lined up to take his job.

After coming close to appointing Jol as his assistant three years ago, Ferguson is a confirmed admirer of the Dutchman and sees no reason to point out his many coaching attributes.

But he is a bit startled at the way he looks to have come so close to losing his job just three games into the season.

"The work Martin has done is outstanding, and he does not need me to trumpet his abilities," said Ferguson.

"In a way, his situation is similar to the one I faced when I came to United in 1986.

"Tottenham is a club with a fantastic football history. They produce fantastic players. But they have not won the league for 45 years, which creates an expectation.

"You need time to change round a massive club like that. It is only his second full season. He did a terrific job last year - and he has bought well.

"I am just sad there is such a knee-jerk reaction in football today."

With so many trophies behind him, Ferguson knows he will never be put under such pressure over a couple of bad results.

However, he is keenly aware the demand for victories at Old Trafford means Sunday's clash is now a key game.

Striker Louis Saha is expected to be on the bench, after finally overcoming a long-term knee problem - while Edwin van der Sar is also available after scans on the foot injury he suffered in training with Holland on Tuesday showed nothing major.

Ferguson is set to introduce Brazil international Anderson into his starting line-up for the first time, completing an all-South American attack with Carlos Tevez.

However, there will be no Gary Neville because the Red Devils captain has been ruled out for another two weeks after picking up a thigh strain - which is virtually ends his chances of being involved in England's Euro 2008 double-header with Israel and Russia next month.

"It is a frustrating one for Gary, possibly caused by a bit of over-training," said Ferguson.

"He had done everything right and was looking really good. But he did a bit extra and has picked up a strain that will probably keep him out for a couple of weeks, which is a blow."

That's a pretty damn good team and when you consider the number of injuries we have still being able to field a squad of that strength speaks volumes. Only 2 questions remain:

1. Can they gel
2. Will they shoot

1. Can they gel
This team has played fluently for the opening games so I dont see why not

2. Will they shoot
Thats the question. When we get near the edge of the box we need to shoot more often. Scholes and Giggs in particular have an unselfish habit of making another pass when the goal is in clear sight.

This team looks even stronger from an attacking point of view now that Saha and Anderson are back. Hopefully this will be our time to open the floodgates.

I agree that those two questions are important, particularly the shooting issue. Lately, I think we've been doing too much trickery for our own good. Someone get's into a decent shooting position, but instead of shooting they try a smart pass straight into the box, which almost always ends up blocked.

3-0

i think we'll try and get the job done in the first half so that we dont get overly anxious in the second half.

im gathering saha may be back, if thats the case then im still not sure if he'll start nonetheless we need the win and i cant see us losing this one for the life of me!

I totally agree. Its really important to get that early goal. Then we can settle. Going in at half time either goaless or losing will not be good.

We need that goal so doubt does not enter their minds.

----------VDS---------
Brown--Rio--Vidic--Evra
----Owen---Carrick----
--------Scholes--------
---Nani---------Giggs--
---------Tevez---------

1-1: Bent, Tevez.

6-1.

Anderson to score on his debut after Saha scores a double after missing quite a few sitters. Tevez and Nani to open thier accounts. Scholes or Vidic to open the Scoring.

This is my guess at the team that will play for Spurs tomorrow, given injuries to all 3 of our first choice CBs:

----------- Robinson ---------
Chimbonda - Rocha - Gardner - Lee
---------- Huddlestone -------
Malbranque --- Jenas ---- Bale
------- Berbatov - Defoe

Subs: Cerny, Stalteri, Zokora, Taraabt, Keane

With Taraabt coming on 2nd half to replace Bale, who is probably not yet fit enough for a full 90 mins. Could be Keane to start instead of Defoe.

I hope Bale does play in LM. If so it will be the first time for a long time that we've actually had a decent-looking left flank.

with the renties winning their game, we have got to win ours to keep the gap at 5 points.

I'd take a win of any kind.

as i have been saying before, those feckers are the masters of the 1-0...
We should win this one at home, is a must win game... we need our confidence back and hope for a great Saha come back.

------------VDS------------
Brown-Ferdinand-Vidic-Evra
---------Hargreaves--------
-----Carrick-----Scholes----
Nani------Tevez------Giggs

Hargreaves scores from a free-kick and Tevez marks his home debut with two goals.

3-0

Hopefully :nervous:

I had a dream last night we'll win this 8-1.

If we can get an early goal we will win easily. If we can't it could be another frustrating game

I see the Caf is crazy optimistic today
4-0
8-1
6-1
3-0

Does no one else think this might be a tough game? Even the bookies have Spurs at eight to one.

I'm getting very nervous!

That's the team that started against City. I was really hoping Saha would at least be on the bench. feck I'm even more nervous now:nervous:

The game starts in 3 hours, I doubt its the official line-up. And BTW, I hate Sunday games, and I hate late games. FFS, I cant wait that long.

May the thread starter also include kick off time and the date of the game next time! Do it properly or leave it to the others!

The players today will deliver, and with Saha at least on the bench (if it's not a surprise start) and Anderson coming back, we have some options.

Hi Fergie! Hope we win today. Please buy Berbatov & Ronaldinho. Cheers!
