Manchester United vs Valencia CF

Valencia actually have a very good balanced team on paper...Why the feck were they so shit for the last two seasons?

Class players such as Silva, Villa, Vicente, Joaquin, Marchena, Albiol, Banega, Manuel, Mata, Miguel, Albeda, etc

They werent shit last season. They had great form (the best ever start for a spanish side in la liga, top of the league for the first 3 months.) Then they had a huge slump, something like 15 games without a clean sheet and were then inconsistant till the end of the season. Playing for no pay didnt help any.

The season before they had Koeman. Dont really need to explain further than that.

Really excited about this one because it's our first real opportunity to see how we're going to approach competitive games imo.

Nani, Berbatov.

I don't know, it's only a few days before the Charity Shield isn't it? I think we'll see a lot of changes between the two games with almost everyone getting a start, much like it has been all pre-season.

I like your starting XI though, would like to see that against Birmingham, but maybe Anderson for Fletcher given the weakness of opposition.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the team that starts against Valencia is pretty much identical to the team that starts against Chelsea, the team that finishes the friendly on Wednesday though will obviously be vastly different.

Nice crest the Valencia one I liked it so much I redone it for my online league teams crest

Its still just a friendly. Valencia havent played Silva, Villa or Mata (or Fernandes, on his way back from injury) in their friendlies so far, including the one yesterday where Cardiff gave them a good match. They are trying out some of the players who might not be there next season and some of the new players they signed.

I'm fairly sure we'll win a penalty at some point though, Valencia dont half have some clumsy defenders.

Really looking forward to this. I know it's just a friendly but will be good to get into the old trafford routine again! Hopefully there will be some goals.

Totally agreed.

I don't think we'll play a full strength side because of the Charity Shield being just a few days later; and we tend to play a strong XI for that, regardless of whether the side actually goes 'full out' in terms of their performance itself. I'm still fairly confident about this, but Valencia do have a decent side (especially if Villa and Silva start), and could cause us some problems, especially as we may be missing a couple of defenders (although they should be fine for the start of the season proper, and the back-up is decent).

3-2: Rooney x2, Owen

Field full strenght, last game before season kicks off. We need to know where we stand.

SIR Alex Ferguson has been told Manchester United no longer frighten their European rivals.

United take on Valencia at Old Trafford tomorrow night and their boss Unai Emery reckons the Premier League champions no longer scare the wits out of their opponents.

Emery believes the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez has taken the fear factor away from facing Ferguson’s men.

He said: “United have lost Ronaldo and Tevez and we’re not scared of any of their players.

“Of course, they are still a strong team and we are respectful towards the likes of Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs. But we are Valencia and can beat anyone.”

What a disrespectful cnut, we have plenty of players to fear.

What did you expect him to say ? I'm having nightmares over facing Rooney and we would be lucky to get a draw ?

I don't think he was being disrespectful, he was just saying what any manager worth his salt would say.

There is plenty of stuff to say, besides insulting the rest of our squad and making us sound like a two-man-team.

This line especially bugs me:

“United have lost Ronaldo and Tevez and we’re not scared of any of their players."

Rooney should be enough to scare them.

I was about to say the same thing !

Nothing beats watching United play at Old Trafford.

We might as well sign Villa whilst he's here

Why should he be scared? Do you think Sir Alex is scared of David Villa?

Probably not, because of our defensive line, but Fergie will definitely be aware that he's a very effective striker. Besides, players don't have to scare you to make them effective.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I think it's very easy to make comments about the opposition not being so great anymore when it's a Friendly, and if Valencia do poorly at OT, he can pass it off as being the nature of pre-season, or his side not being back to full fitness. I think Emery would be taking a very different tone were this a UCL semi-final, or something. Still, the comments will hopefully spur our lads on to show they're every bit as fearful as our big-money sales.

I'm going for 3-1 myself: Rooney x2, Scholes

Well there can be many reasons for Unai Emery's comments.

1 - to add some more needle to the match and make sure its a competative one.

2 - to give confidence to his players, especially the defence which is more than suspect. I'm convinced we'll get a penalty at some point, either Maduro or Alexis will trip someone in a clumsy way. And those are their better central defenders... So if one of the backups or Marchena plays, giving away a penalty will be the last of their worries.

3 - Because he has a point. Not so much with Tevez, but you have to know that if he'd stuck around another season there's no way he'd score as few league goals as he did last season again. But with Ronaldo in specific, we've lost the player who scored most of our goals in the bigger matches. He got 6 which is double anyone else in our team. So of course sides are going to be a lot less scared of us coming forwards. I mean, 2 years ago the "Holy Trinity" scared the hell out of everyone and one of the reasons teams sat back last season against us. Even though, funnily enough, we barely saw the trinity at all. But now we certainly wont with 2 of those 3 players gone. To an opposition manager and/or the fans of an opposition club we look a hell of a lot weaker. And we might be yet. We dont know. All we can do is wait and see and hope that 3 or 4 players have hugely improved seasons.

By the way, he has valid excuses even if Valencia get a whipping. Silva, Villa and Mata may not play - they havent played a single pre-season game yet. So most likely he'll continue to field players who's futures are up in the air and who are playing for their place in the squad. And La Liga kicks off a week after the premier league, so they are behind on their preperations too. He doesnt need to create new excuses.

Jeez, more like Dick Emery

Last friendly of pre-season, and I know it's only a friendly but finally we have a game at Old Trafford again and hopefully it's a good game. A good, emphatic win should set us up nicely for the Renties on Sunday
