Manchester United vs. West Bromwich Albion

I was speaking with my friend who is a season ticket holder at West Brom.

He reckons Lukaku is a bag of shit, even though he seems to have a good record so far this season, he reckons that we only see his highlights on match of the day but in reality he is actually pretty shit :wenger:

That is absolute dross from your friend, Lukaku is our top scorer in the league having been rotated a lot (prior to yesterday's match he was something like 3rd or 4th in the goals per minute played rankings). He's not polished and still raw (as you would expect from any 19 year old) but he's clearly got a lot of talent. He get's some things wrong but he gets a lot of things right and can give any defender in the league an extremely tough time.

With that said, given the rotation involved in the forwards this season, it'll almost certainly be Long who starts with Lukaku coming on later.

What are the chances of us not actually going behind in this game. Would be nice if we can complete a nice comfortable win this time, while getting a cleansheet

Very less. WBA pose more of a challenge than what Newcastle does (or did before the match last night). They are a lot more organised than Newcastle since Clarke took over. In my opinion, it is going to be more of a difficult match than NU.

But that said, hopefully Cleverley will be back and Scholes and Giggs might not start making the team in a much better shape.

They rested Long and Odemwingie for the game against us I believe. I'm in absolutely no doubt they'll score. Any United game is a dead cert for any Goals Galore coupon.

This is a really difficult game, West Brom are a class team. Will do well to get a win here with our recent injuries + the Newcastle game will have taken out a lot of us I imagine.

Whilst I know WBA are doing very well, I haven't really seen that much of them - so rather than set-up to counter them, this is what I'd like (assuming we remain fecked with injuries which is a fair bet):

---------------------------------De Gea (feck unnecessary rotation)
Smalling---Vidic---Evans---Evra
Cleverley---Carrick---Fletcher
Valencia---Hernandez---Welbeck

RVP has to rest at some point, we can't really risk keeping starting him over the Xmas programme with Liverpool and Spurs coming up. Welbeck I'm hoping will return from illness/hang-over by then.

Am sure we'll start with VP, but might be able to get him off if things are going well.

If Welbeck's been ill, might be optimistic to get him starting a few days later.

Is Kagawa even close? Does anyone really know?

So Kagawa and Nani to return at Wigan (Game after)
Rooney not back for a few yet
And rafa/ Welbeck should be available for this game

Seems to be the general consensus

West Brom are a strong well disciplined teams, but after that mini wobble a few weeks ago, they've been very fortunate to get back to wining ways. I certainly think there is a fragility about them.

Their midfield is very impressive.

Nevertheless West Brom aren't a "class" team. Odemwingie is alright when he can be bothered, and Long is a useful bastard but we've got to hope we can put in a shift here. Especially with so many players having a rest compared to West Brom's very thin squad.

Jonas Olsson might not make this game as he has a a slight injury. Would be good - he is a big threat from set-pieces

------------------------------de gea-----------------------

---Rafael------------vidic-----------j.Evans ---buttner---

----Valencia---------carrick------cleverly--------giggs--

-------------------------------------van Persie ----------

----------------------------Hernandez--------------------

Kagawa, welbeck, nani on bench as backup firepower

Saturday's bench should have a lot more attacking options than yesterday's bench!

That was surely the least attacking bench we've fielded in living memory.

Would like to see this team:

De Gea, Rafael/Smalling, Vidic, Evans, Evra, Young, Carrick, Cleverley, Fletcher, van Persie, Hernandez/Welbeck.

Would also like to see Kagawa get some minutes from the bench, if he is available.

Need to be strong and hard working in midfield.

Scholes should be no where near the team.

I'd start Vidic or Smalling alongside Evans our best defence against Lukaku's ariel threat. If Rafa's back him at right back. If not, Jones.

If we're not at the races at the back, especially in wide areas, West Brom are good enough defensively to stem our free scoring. This could be a real banana skin.

I'd be very surprised if Cleverly didn't start this one. He's gotten his rest, and as always made such a difference on Wednesday.

Young, Rafael and Welbeck will hopefully make a return to the squad. I'm sick of building myself up for a Kagawa return, so I'll just wait and see in that regard.

Jones? Would much rather have him at RB than Smalling if Rafa doesn't make it.

That's an away game. Won't happen.

Agree. Actually, tomorrow is far more likely to be the game for Fergie to rest him. If Welbeck's illness didn't take too much out of him, he'd be a shout for a start tomorrow, I reckon.

I'd love to see more of Danny and Hernandez. I think the two of them would make a good duo with a bit of time together.

I'm starting to think Fergie will throw caution to the wind and play him against WBA and Wigan then give him a break in the FA Cup.

With Valencia looking awful, Young incinsistant and a doubt, Welbeck being ill and Nani being out I wouldn't fancy relying on Hernandez against one of the better performing sides in the league.

no way we should rest van persie, especially with rooney out now.

the fa cup tie is probably the best opportunity to give him a bit of a break.

Why does the fact that it's an away game change the fact Wigan are a far worse team than West Brom?

I think Ricky-Romeo hit the nail on the head there. I am fairly sure it will be the FA Cup tie if van Persie is rested, as Rooney also has an outside chance of making that game too.

Start the best possible team, get the game won first then rest players. Hopefully we can have a comfortable lead after an hour. The way we are making it difficult for ourselves at the moment though.....

I'm really hoping Kagawa is fit enough to start

If only it was that easy.

WBA are having a blinding season. It won't be an easy win and we'll have to score at least twice.

Then why are people talking about resting players?

Because Fergie confirmed there would be rotation over the festive period. He does it every year.

You can't expect the same team to play 4 games in 10 days.

Why does the fact that it's an away game change the fact Wigan are a far worse team than West Brom?

It doesn't. But it's an established fact that home advantage has a very high influence on the outcome of any game; our odds of winning the West Brom game will be shorter than for the Wigan one.

DDG

Jones - Vidic - Smalling - Evans

Valencia - Carrick - Cleverley - Young

Hernandez - Welbeck

Van Persie off the Bench.

Hmmm

It'll never happen but with that in mind I'd rather we played:

Much as I agree that it would be wise to rest RVP, it would be a mistake to have neither him nor Rooney playing. Our other strikers are great, but there'd still be a serious vacuum up front without either of them. RVP's just going to have to suck it up untilt the FA Cup match.

I'd like to see the rest of the team absolutely busting a gut for the first hour or so to try and establish a comfortable lead, for once. Then we could take him off nice and early. Also, I'd like to see them absolutely busting a gut anyway, because there've been far too many lazy, casual performances all round this season, and it's time to pull the fecking finger out.
