Manchester United vs. Wigan Athletic, 20/11/10

Bit too early to decide with Internationals etc.....

Park and Hernadez have the week off as far as I'm aware, not sure if Rafael has pulled out, Kuszczak, Anderson, Carrick and DeLaet haven't been called up, but Smalling has. Rafael withdrew from Brazil due to injury which he may still have.

So without international callups...

Van der Sar; Rafael, G. Neville, Brown, Evra; Park, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs; Berbatov, Hernandez

Subs: Kuszczak; DeLaet, Fabio; Obertan, Bébé, Anderson; Macheda/Rooney

In terms of the internationals:

SMALLING, FERDINAND (London) ENGLAND vs. France
O'SHEA, GIBSON (Dublin) REPUBLIC OF IRELAND vs. Norway
J. EVANS (Belfast) NORTHERN IRELAND vs. Morrocco
NANI (Lisbon) PORTUGAL vs. Spain
FLETCHER (Edinburgh) SCOTLAND vs. Faroe Islands
VIDIC (Sofia) Bulgaria vs. SERBIA

However those who hate internationals should realise that Wigan will probably lose the likes of Rodegella for this game.

My guess Nani will be rested for this one.

---------VDS---------
Rafael-Vidic-Rio---Evra
-Fletch-Carrick-Park--
Nani----------Obertan
-----Chicharito-------

van der Sar
Brown Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Nani Carrick Scholes Giggs
Hernandez Berbatov

I can see Neville getting another game at Right Back for this, but I'd prefer Brown (or Rafael if fully fit). Fletcher will probably still start but I wouldn't mind seeing Carrick and Scholes in the middle as they'll be fresh. Giggs will hopefully be fresh but considering he's coming back from injury he could start on the bench, or at least come off after the hour (Park or Obertan are the obvious replacements). I think Rooney will probably start if he makes this one.

Kuszczak; O'Shea, Smalling; Fletcher, Obertan, Park, Macheda is somewhat of a likely bench. But it could be Fletcher starting in favour of Carrick, Park/Obertan in favour of Giggs, and Macheda not making the match day squad if Rooney is involved.

We need a convincing win, Berbatov needs to score again, 4-0.

Excellent post.

SAF will be looking at who has played in friendlies and where they have played as well.

1 striker at home to Wigan? Yeah right

People need to stop placing so much importance on systems, in that team Nani, Park, Obertan and Chicharito all have goals in them, the two full backs are very attacking players and the rest are all tall and a threat at set pieces. Whatever team we put out it should be more than capable of beating Wigan and getting a few goals regardless of whether or not we play 451 or 442.

Include Sir Alex Ferguson in that 'people' bracket then.

We'll definitely start with two strikers.

Macheda may have done enough to displace one of the two strikers that started our last game. Berbatov is getting his usual abuse after a poor game but based on their relative performance I'd say Hernandez is more likely to sit this one out.

Well apart from Vidic everyone plays in the same time zone, Fletcher gets an extra day break and since I posted Darron Gibson has pulled out already because his one year old daughter Evie is ill. Corry Evans has an injury and can't play. Valencia and Hargreaves are all injured of course too.

--------------Van der Sar--------------

Rafael------Ferdinand-----Vidic------Evra

Nani------Scholes-------Carrick-----Giggs

---------Macheda------Hernandez-------

Someone's due a thrashing for the last few games. I'm saying 4-0. Rooney to score a hatrick. Wonder what the media would make of that?

I fancy us to give these a spanking.

VDS
Rafael Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Nani Scholes Carrick Giggs
Macheda Berbatov

Hopefully Rooney will be fit enough to make at least the bench.

He's finally scored a goal after leaving a lot to be desired all season, Rooney & Hernandez have to be the best combination, surely?

Very surprised at all the different striking combinations being proposed.

Surely it will be a priority to give our first choice striking pair some much needed gametime together and the opportunity for both of them in a relatively easy home game to get out of their slump in form.

He has a great record vs Wigan as well. Can see it happen.

I wonder why so many believe Rooney will start, his match fitness is poor. Can't see him getting thrown in from kick-off, he'll probably do a cameo and then start. Having said that, it's Wigan at home, wouldn't surprise me if the kunt started.

I agree.

Starting with one striker against Wigan at home is just silly.

If he is just going to be thrown into a game then surely a game against Wigan would be ideal.

I'd wager Rooney AND Macheda/Hernandez to be on the bench.
With Berbs and Macheda/Hernandez upfront

Nani's getting an Evra-esque long run of games, can United afford to rest him or does anyone think Paulo Bento will give him limited action this week?

Since Fletcher has emerged unscaved from his encounter against the Faroese, Nani's the only concern outside the defenders on duty.

Otherwise, internationally United will have at least four players on centreback duty, and one as a backup centreback. At least Wes Brown's retired from this, Evra's banned and well Rafael's working his way back to fitness.

Is there any news on Rooney? any training pictures? by all accounts he returned from America on saturday and was due to start training with us at carrington this week.

No pressure if he's training against only one senior centreback (Brown). May have to put Berbatackle as a emergency CB in the training games.

The OP on these threads should make the initial post just a '.' or something.

It will probably be affected by the midweek fixtures, so it won't be Macheda. Could be any two from Rooney, Berba and Hernandez.

We played two strikers upfront at home against Liverpool. So I m 100% confident that we are going to play two strikers against Wigan.

This is a game where Berbatov SHOULD start. It is an easy game and this is a sort of game where Berba can score pretty easily and get his confidence back up.

The guy who arranged it is meant to be my friend, I knew I'm over paying but I said I would get to more games this season so I'm not properly fussed.
Travelling up by myself as all of my friends couldn't come for some reason or another.

If fit and available I'd like to see:

- VDS -

- Rafael - Rio - Vidic - Evra -

- Obertan - Scholes - Fletcher - Nani -

- Rooney - Macheda -

I'd be tempted to play Fabio instead of Evra as his form as been way below standard and I think Hernadez and Berbatov didn't do themselves any favors last week so I'd go with a new front two and tell them to go and stake their claim!

This for me except I think I'd play Hernandez because I want to see him and Rooney play together.

Is Rio injured following the England game?
