Manchester United vs. Wigan Athletic

I know Scholes saved our bacon against Southampton but we need to be giving games to Cleverley and Anderson or they simply won't get any better.

Surely a home tie against Wigan is an opportunity to do just that?

with Cleverley getting the start with Carrick and not making the most of it, you would have to think Anderson would get a chance.Fergie usually gives them a start at home so barring Anderson playing for Brazil (cant remember him getting a call up for one of their friendlies) he gets my vote.

I'd like to see someone like Petrucci on the bench.

15th Sept!

How I hate beginning of the season internationals.

FFS! I just realised that the match wasn't tomorrow...

Yeah its crap, the bloody international qualifiers this earlier, what with the friendlies like a week into the season as well. I'm English and want England to do well and still it winds me up.

I hope on the 15th we smash Wigan 6-0 at OT, which we could well do. Punish them for last season.

So is De Gea likely to be back for this? Or did SAF say he'd be dropped for 2 games?

Is it really another week until the match ?? Crap.

He said he'd be back in a couple of weeks so I imagine he'll be playing in this game.

Would like to see Hernandez get a chance in this one. Deserves a start after his performance against Southampton. Kagawa can be benched after what would be a hectic week of travelling.

Not happy with Wigan. Completely uncalled for what they did to us in April. Hopefully Sir Alex has had a word with DW and all will be back to normal for this.

Don't even think we can say they did anything to us. That was quite easily one of the least arsed I have ever seen a United team look.

Wigan away last season demonstrates why Giggs should never be used as a midfielder again.

It feels like ages since we last played a match.

I'd rather Chica start against Galatasaray and maybe come off the bench against Wigan.

vs. Wigan

de Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Carrick Scholes
Valencia Kagawa Nani
van Persie
--
Lindegaard; Evans; Cleverley, Anderson, Giggs; Welbeck, Hernandez

vs. Galatasaray

Lindegaard
Rafael Vidic Evans Buttner
Nani Cleverley Anderson Young
Welbeck Hernandez
--
de Gea; Ferdinand; Carrick, Giggs, Powell, Valencia; van Persie

I don't think I'd mind that... But I kind of hope Fergie goes full strength for both, it's just that we're going to Anfield after this game so I'd like to have Ferdinand, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Scholes, Kagawa, and van Persie fresh with no worry of them getting an injury here.

I reckon Giggs will feature in both the Wigan and Galatasaray games as well, but probably as a sub.

If we start with two wingers on the wings, I reckon we'll smash Wigan four or five. If we start Welbeck, Kagawa, and van Persie together again, I guarantee we will struggle. The games come thick and fast now, I hope Fergie uses our squad properly rather than playing players out of position (I hope that was purely for the attackers to gain match fitness quicker).

I agree with your line-up against Wigan, but I think you're slightly underestimating Galatasaray there.

The Galatasaray match will be a much more difficult game than Wigan, and I would rather the likes of Buttner, Young and Hernandez play against Wigan as I assume they are lacking match fitness. We underestimated our 'easy' group last year and look what happened.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think it'll be a harder game as well, but at the same time, Liverpool will be harder than either, so certain players may be left out. Almost definitely Ferdinand, Scholes, and van Persie anyway. It's not a weak team, but Evra would probably still play, perhaps Carrick and Valencia too. If we're going 442, which I would expect at home, then it'd probably be something like: Lindegaard; Rafael, Vidic, Evans, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Cleverley, Nani; Welbeck, Hernandez. Not a massive difference, but with Buttner likely having little match fitness, and Young coming back from injury, that's where the real difference comes in. Probably players like Giggs, Anderson, Young, Buttner to come off the bench though I guess.

Our schedule is really tough for the next few months though, then Christmas is never easy. So, now is the time to start using the squad, but we definitely need to start the Champions League with a win to lift any pressure there might be. We even got Newcastle in the League Cup, so we'll probably have to field a strong team there unless we want to piss it away early. Jones and Smalling can't come back soon enough.

That is why i hate international football with the September break topping my list. One waits 3 months of summer break to watch proper football, then they give it back to you for three bloody weeks and take it away for 2.

feck International Football!

This.

Indeed, I still keep clicking this thread every time I visit the site hoping the game comes sooner..

It doesn't, by the way.

I think we might see:

De Gea
Rafael---Vidic---Ferdinand---Evra
Valencia---Carrick---Scholes---Giggs
RVP---Welbeck

... as Scholes and Giggs are on the verge of landmark appearances, so I think Sir Alex will want them to achieve those from the start at home. I also think he'll play Welbeck from the start regardless of other options, and maybe rest Kagawa depending on the travelling he'll be doing. Also a chance Young plays if fit, and I'm starting to believe Nani is in the doghouse :(

But I'd prefer:

De Gea
Rafael---Vidic---Ferdinand---Evra
Valencia---Carrick---Cleverley---Nani
Kagawa
RVP

... then go for the same team against Galatasaray - feck rotation, all our players get injured anyway so we may as well go strong.

Think we'll go with scholes/carrick vs Liverpool so that in mind I think Anderson/scholes v wigan, carrick/cleverley v galatasaray with carrick coming off in the second half to keep him fresh.

Scholes needs games and a longer break while clev/carrick on international break and going with experience at anfield. Atleast there's an (failed) attempt at reasoning :D

Keep him fresh? We only just started the season and he's just had 2 weeks off!

Scholes & Carrick have been awful recently at anfield.

In a midfield two I wouldnt like to see them.
If we go with Kagawa in front of them then alright (although I'd rather see Clev or Ando paired with either of them)

Didn't they completely dominate last season after Scholes returned? We lost but we didn't deserve it, well that's what I remember, could be wrong. In previous seasons they have struggled though, but then if Kagawa plays just ahead it will help with that as he'll even the numbers. Would go with Clev though.

Reckon Scholes will play against Wigan, he played well against Southampton, had had a rest and it's a home game. Can see Ando partner him if he's fit, then again doesn't look like Carrick will start for England. Reckon giggs will start in europe so will be a sub.

I think we'll do it the other way around, if we're changing the starting line-ups that much. After last year, I'm sure SAF will put his strongest team available for the CL opener, just so that we can have all 3 points and a good start. Invariably I think we'll shoot for max 12 points after the first 4 games, and give games to youngster after that if he feels inclined.

Agree with what you suggest but I think we will see that come in to play in later league matches. As this one is followed by a trip to Liverpool, I think Fergie's only option is to rest a few more than is ideal in midweek.

Scholes & Carrick have been awful recently at anfield.

Scholes was quite possibly our best player the last time we've met over there. What we needed was a Kagawa who would link the play up between cm and Welbeck (was it?) He controlled the play and I wouldn't go there without the only United cm in recent years who has been comfortable on the ball at Anfield.
