The team was crying out for a dynamic central midfielder who wouldn't necessarily be physical but would make it possible to maintain a fast tempo and recover possession quickly when lost. This is the role Fletcher performed and the team has been found wanting in central areas since he fell ill. A dynamic midfielder would have also provided us with flexibility in terms of formations, he would be able to function in a 2 or 3 man central midfield. This is why the chase for Herrera made sense but for Fellaini a bit baffling and although it is still too early to pass judgement on Fellaini as a United player, his style of play just doesn't offer what we need.
At this moment in time, the team looks better off with Cleverly rather than Fellaini partnering Carrick. Similarly the forward role Moyes has tried to replicate with Fellaini when chasing the game is also a bit unnatural what we have become accustomed to at United. This also adds to some uneasiness among fans over the seemingly lofty position in the pecking order than Fellaini has at the moment. Is his selection based on merit or the mere fact that he has played for Moyes before?
