A lack of good scripts/screenwriters i guess

I watched Top Gun: Maverick the other day, it was well made, acted and so on but it was just a clone of the original, you could predict pretty much 10 mins before what was going to happen before it actually happened

There seems to be very little willingness to create something original these days, certainly in the mainstream. Hence all the remakes and refreshes. See Star Wars where even a supposed sequel was pretty much a redo of the first film. The trend is leaking into the world of gaming too.

Exactly, and movies like this have always been around. Just look at pre-superhero stuff like M:I 2, it was a silly, big budget action movie as well.

I don't mind them being popular there's a lot of trashy dumb things that are very popular whether films TV or music.

It's the people that seem to think these films are works of art and ranking them as best films of all time l which makes me laugh.

They are basically the film version of the only way is Essex or Geordie shore.

Spit-balling here but I reckon Hollywood's biggest issue is less about quality of writing and more because they can't figure out a decent way to market new products towards the 18-40 y/o demographic.

It seems like a generation who are quite reluctant to part with cash to watch something that they might end up disliking. The proliferation of streaming services - which I guess you could say is the modus operandi of this age group - sort of emphasises how quickly and easily you can discard something if you don't like it; whereas if you actually to the cinema then you're pretty much stuck either watching the movie or leaving early.

Psychologically I guess it requires people to have a greater belief that what they watch is worth their time. It then becomes easier to make remakes/reboots ad nauseum until it becomes simply unprofitable.

Good observation and I don't think it's a coincidence either considering the overlap between those audiences. People gravitate towards what they already know and like.

True - mind you I've never seen a Star Wars film and my gaming is basically Civ 6!

I've played Civ since version 2, missed the first one, I can't handle anything that requires quick fingers and thumbs, Railroad Tycoon was fab as well until the last version which was terrible - Sid Meier knows how do do games!

2 was my first as well, used to pretend I was I’ll to get off school and spend the day on it :lol: . Struggle to find the time to play the most recent ones although I’ve eyed them up a few times lately.

Didn't have computers when I was school, Pong was in it's heyday then!

I tend to play in streaks, every day for a week and then nothing for a month, I only play 6 these days though, because every version you have to play differently and I can't remember that much!
 
So basically cinema is original if it’s acting, new story etc etc , give it take an amazing follow up (kill bill, original Star Wars etc) is acceptable, but as soon as it becomes a spin off or a 20 year later follow on (Indiana jones and the crystal meth) it isn’t.

happy with that, but…..

what is the difference between water park (aka avatar 2) and other computer graphic movies - which is what a lot of marvel is

Tbh I haven't seen them but yeah it wouldn't be surprising. Most of the mission impossible films are shite, we went from Brian De Palma and John Woo to JJ Abrams(The only good thing about 3 is Philip Seymour Hoffman brilliant villain performance). And apart from Casino Royale the same can be said of the recent Bond film(Everyone is still trying to copy The Bourne Identity), imo the best recent spy film has been Atomic Blonde.

I'm quite lucky in the sense we have an awesome 4-screen cinema in the heart of my city that shows everything, from the latest Marvel movies to art-house darlings. It's a great crowd and makes me want to visit more often (as a member it only costs £7 a ticket).

I'm not quite sure what it's like over there in the states but I get an impression that it's very multiplex orientated?
