Mass shooting at Church in US

Yep. Though we still have a strange dichotomy where people like Che Guevara (who obviously fits all the criteria of a terrorist in definition) are held up as marketable icons.

@Pogue Mahone It's essentially an argument about profiling is it? And how fair/justified it is. You're never going to stop people speculating, and everyone's will be biased to some degree depending on what we associate with these acts. There'd have been a time post-Columbine and pre-9/11 where a mass shooting would've instantly been associated with pale white gothy kids rather than beardy Muslim men.

What it should really be about is media responsibility to not speculate without the facts. Though that's becoming harder and harder in the 24hour news age where TV is already lagging behind the internet in INSTANT!! content.

When I hear of mass shootings in America I tend to think it was some disaffected inadequate with a personal vendetta as that profile seems to make up the vast majority of mass shootings over there. Has America even had a mass shooting perpetrated by Islamic extremists yet?

That's usually the case. Columbine, Virginia Tech etc. Usually one or more disaffected nutters with access to guns doing the damage.

Killing someone for their skin colour or religion (whatever your skin colour or religion) is a hate crime. Killing someone to promote a belief, or attempt to influence policy or coerce behaviour through your actions, is terrorism. IMO.
Correct.

There are some scumbags in the world, RIP to the victims of this awful crime. I hope they find the person that did it, alive and quickly so that he can face justice.

Not sure about this. A quick Google search of 'French gunmen' leads to scores of reports referencing, what you imply would be 'terrorists', in 'foreign media' for the recent attacks in France.

As for Breivik, do you really feel that the 'foreign' press sought to empathise with him in some way? To me he was always portrayed as a deranged psychopath and a bit of a sad act.

@adexkola

To reference the recent shootings in France, surely there was much Western media digging into their motivations and what might have caused that from their past?

I would be surprised if the British press, at least, tried to frame this gunman as a victim.

I think it was lazier than you would expect. Then again, credible sources quickly linked the gunmen to terrorist cells so speculation on that was minimal. I think.

Been identified as this guy, a 21 year old who has been arrested before.

While we debate again the whole terrorism or not thing let me ask what are the chances that as with so many other mass shootings the guy turns out to have a history of mental illness?
Similar to what someone said a bit earlier, that mental illness defense seems to only apply to a certain type of perpetrator?

Seems somebody's a bit bitter about not landing the role of Simon from Misfits.

I find it concerning that a lot of people are more worried over what type of attack it was and about the political correctness of how it might be portrayed in certain media outlets than about the actual fact that 9 people got killed.

He will surely face the death penalty.

Like who?

Yes, SC has the death penalty. He'll probably take a plea deal that sentences him to life imprisonment.

Do wonder how impactful these white militia supremacy groups are . They do thrive online now, we talk about how radical Islamists are able to propagate their hate speech online. Should there be a conversation maybe on seeing how we can weed out these type of guys on forums etc?

Not sure about this guy in particular, but Elliot Rodger was quite prominent online. Its difficult of course with freedom of speech and all that. But is enough of a spotlight on other things like white power types and soverign citizen movement?

People are capable of doing both those things at the same time.

I think its less to do with political correctness, but more challenging the overarching media narrative and terminology around these events which people take issue with. The fact that despite whatever your definition of the word is, it is almost quite literally in practice only applied to muslim jihadist/fundamentalist types.

For fighting terrorism, we have invaded countries, given up civil liberties etc etc. And in part its the way its talked about, the "tone" of the reporting, the experts brought on, the analysis of more than just the suspect but the overall ideology. People demand this much insight for these kinds of incidents too and one way they think that can be done is if we look into differences as to how these things are reported in the aftermath.

Do they care more about this than the tragedy? I doubt it, but they should be allowed to talk about it without having their sincerity questioned over how they feel about the tragedy of the event.

Another thing that grates people's gears is that there is a tendency for white criminals to be contextualized. Let's assume the suspect is caught. You can expect tons of articles on his horrible upbringing in a household rife with child abuse. Depression. How the system failed him. Pictures of him at his baptism, baseball game, with kids...

RIP, terrible, to be killed in Church... let's see how the media play this out. Maybe we should ask all skinny white guys to apologise for his actions. I've already seen a headline saying "Attack on faith". Yeah, 'faith'.
