Memphis Depay vs Anthony Martial

Memphis = Ronaldo
Martial = Rooney

Prob will end up that way too...

I think, if Van Gaal allows Martial to play his natural game - as a centre forward who drifts to the left, we could be looking at recreating Arsena;s famous left-side before too long. They will form a great partnership down that side I think, and backed up by Shaw - they will be an extremely fast, powerful, skilful - and ultimately, unstoppable force.

Considering Martial only just broke into the Monaco first team (if I'm correct?), then not him. Infact, unless he's truly worth the £36m+, I think we've signed him a bit early. 11 goals in 49 apps for Monaco over two seasons isn't particularly exciting, but there's no doubt he'd have become a great player in a couple years time after regular game time for Monaco.

Prove me wrong Martial! Memphis for this season, though.

Nah from what I gather Martial's been working his way into the team and tail end of last season was pretty much a first teamer.
I get the impression that we went for Martial because he's on the verge of a breakout and didn't want to pay more in the future

That's what I said, isn't it? That he's only just fully broken into the first team... which being an established first teamer only at the tail end of last season confirms.

That's a completely valid reason, but the figure is perhaps a bit too high.

Jesus! I hate to think how much more we could have paid for him

Depay. United are going to look like Liverpool did when they signed Caroll if this Martian turns out to be dogshite. Hopefully not like.
didn't they get Suarez for around 25 mil that season as well though? hint-a-dee-hint-hint

happy to see I'm not the only one that made the connection due to the surrounding circumstances...and neither of them are spanish, brazilian, or portugese so the chances of them jerking off to Real/Barca are also significantly smaller.

Memphis for now. Martial for future. But could be very close.

I thought its more about the case of getting him now rather than losing him to other big clubs fighting for his signature next summer.

I know nothing about Martial and how he plays. Excited about them both.

Whoever works the hardest. Memphis might just edge it for now with his experience, but Martial looks like a great prospect as well. Hopefully LvG will take the shackles off and let the players play some attacking football.
That's the key isn't it! The most difficult thing to predict is not whether the lads are talented or good enough. It's more about whether they are allowed to express themselves without the straight jackets placed upon them and being taught how to play football. They are young enough to be constantly learning but it's important they are not training hard to confine themselves. None attacking football is really hard to watch. Keeping possession without scoring is plain stupid.

Martial.

Played well against Arsenal
Chelsea and Barca(allegedly) wanted him
He is in the French NT with one prestigious cap
Looks good on YouTube....so far.
Will be worth a hell of a lot more in a few years....

....that's really all I need to know

Memphis will be better for for a few years, but i see martial being the better player eventually (fingers crossed)

Bit of a premature question considering he hasn't played for us yet. We don't even where they'll play.

I'm going to say Depay as he's the only one we've seen across a few games and I think his cutting in will get him a fair chunk of goals this season.

Really think we will see a massive return on our summer investment in the two of them. We may not be the force we can be for a season or two while they come to the boil, but in terms of talent, I can certainly see some parallels to the Rooney/Ronaldo infant partnership. Both players have the talent,a nd importantly, both will physically be able to cope with the PL. By the time they are 22/23, they could have us back at the pinnacle.

Watching them the next few seasons will be both frustrating and joyous, almost like watching your kids grow. I hope that Andreas can be integrated into the occasion more too. There are so many variables with young players - but those three certainly have the talent to develop into a wonderful attacking trio for us. Adnan and Wilson may also come into the frame, although you would think Woodward would manage to land a whale soon enough.

As a club, I know we have to move on, but it is a shame to see them take these steps without the security of Sir Alex.

why does everybody see it like this? Memphis himself has top potential whereas very few people have seen Martial play. The pricetag is ridiculous IMO and shouldn't affect people's decision making. I think Memphis will become beasty player, can't say really who will become better now. Pretty daft asking this question this early if you asked me..

Of course its daft, the vast majority of threads on this forum are daft. I've never seen martial play, all i have to go on is the impression the club has given out due to the overall price tag and the fact they have been scouting him for years (so they say) under this assumption im getting behind our new signing and i refuse to think he will bust, therefore i trust the club's thinking in which he will be a top player and worth every penny.

I think Memphis will perform better and he's the much better player which means Martial will have the better season.

The thing i want to see from depay is what i see from robben. Cut in and shoot.

Martial however could be a special player if he learns how to drift out to the right compared to his natural tendencies to drift to the left.

This means from a central position; he could overlap whichever sided winger is cutting in at the time.

I would have waited at least couple of games to launch this thread.. more than eighty percent of people judge him only by pricetag and youtube. I also think that you can make as good highlights of Januzaj's breakthrough season if nto better than Martial where he seems nothing special for me.. that's why I wait with the judgement..

That would make sense because Mata cuts inside more than anyone else.

Not even worth comparing at this time. But, crazier thing has happened in football. And Depay has yet to light the bpl on fire dispite how talented he is. Martial could suit our attack and ease into Van Gaal philosophy much better than I would expect, so their is a possibility that Martial could have a better season, but it is still hard to imagine.

If what we've seen so far is any indication, I think it's gonna take some time for Memphis to really make a big impact. He played very well in the two matches against Brugge, who are a team with the type of quality more like what he saw in the Dutch league...but in all of the EPL matches so far he has been knocked down and dispossessed quite a bit.

read somewhere that 8 were in his last 9 last season.

if that's true, a darn sight more impressive!

Similar to Rooney's record at Everton which was around 15 in 67. So I wouldn't take that statistic alone and say it's unexciting. Teenagers rarely have a record of a goal every other game.

But yeah, as of now logically one would have to go with Memphis. I'll probably post again on this once I see Martial's first few performances.

Memphis has been underwhelming so far but he deserves two seasons before we start worrying.

Martial's raw skills look better than Depay's. He also seems a lot more willing to get involved in the build-up. Depay's been a bit of a passenger so far. Long term, I'm gonna guess that Martial will be the better player. Obviously, this whole post is couched in the usual warnings.

If Memphis will correct his decision making a bit he'll be out of reach for most talented attacking wingers in Europe. It's a matter of time since it's probably his only visible detriment right now.

On the other hand if Martial will have cracking debut games that will change United's game then everyone may really start using Henry's comparison. He may easily become United's and in general a football legend. He just needs a good start here and he may have a chance to surpass Memphis by the size of the impact but right now Dutchman is ahead a little with his last season after very promising World Cup and goals galore performances in Eredivisie.
