MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

Zen, you appear just as Striker logs off! It's like he never left.

people either forget or have not lived through the years when we brought up some of the players that became United legends in the past.

We did not dominate the game almost non-stop as we have been doing for the last 20 years or so. When I look at teh current squad, there is a hell of a lot of potential there.

It's absolutely farcical...The only time we have EVER bought big was the Veron/Ruud era, and that didn't really work, so instead we went for promising youth again, and - you know what? - it worked.

Rooney says "I'm all about winning trophies" apparently, and yet he's won 9 here in his 6 years. Including one last season.

Not to mention that the squad we have now is actually better than it was when he arrived 6 years ago. We had Richardson, Djemba Djemba and Kleberson FFS!. Ronaldo was in his early days and not as good as Nani is right now, so with the exception of Ruud, we even arguably have a much better first team now. And from the point Rooney signed in 2004, until about 2008, we didn't spend big bucks on anyone, apart from Carrick, who wasn't anymore expensive than Valencia was. So where has this sudden desire to spend big come from? And how can he possibly come out with such bollocks that we aren't ambitious enough for him given not just the last 6 years, but the last one!!

And lastly, even if he was telling the truth (which I'd bet my hairy balls he isn't) then to suddenly throw his toys out of the pram and demand a move because he thinks we aren't good enough for him after ONE season of not winning the league or getting to the CL final, when players like Fabregas/Torres/Gerrard would kill to be playing at the level we are now, and have been for six years, shows such startling arrogance, short sightedness and disloyalty that even if everything he said was true, it wouldn't even begin to be a legitimate shield from the hate he's getting...It would only legitimise more!

I'm not trying to pretend we don't have any financial issues...We clearly do. But for Rooney to use them for his own ends to try and legitimise his greed as knee-jerk wankerishness is farcical.

Did you read Fergies' very recent quote about potential?

Yes, but it's not going to randomly change my opinion of the likes of Gibson, Smalling, Anderson etc becoming world stars. He has to defend the club, and he's done it superbly so far in all of this, but it's not going to change the fact there is a hint of truth in what Rooneys "statement" said.

rofl. That's not it AT ALL. I think everyone knows we've never gone after the outright best, but we've gone after who have a special talent that can be fully recognized at Man Utd. Valencia, Obertan, Smalling, Hernandez, Bebe are NOT these type of players.

We bought Keane, Cantona, Stam, Ruud, Veron, Rio, Ronaldo, Rooney.....all players when we were signing we knew we were getting something special, someone who can lead the lead the team in time, sure other players can step up, but no one we have signed post-Ronaldo is remotely the same as those players, good? Sure, some of them, potential to be better? Yes. Potential to be a true character for the team? Not really.

It's kinda like the Keane outburst, there are not enough characters in the team, when he said it, we had the two most talented teenagers in the world pretty much, this time, we don't.

Missing out on Bale AND Ramsey was awful for us, both of these two will be the best British players in their positions in 5 years, if not much sooner, yet instead of us, they chose.....Arsenal and Spurs.

Veron hardly set the world alight after signing, while Ruud was coming back from a serious injury and there was no guarantee he would get back to his best. Cantona had an habit of disrupting teams and he was always in arguments with his club/national coach. Ronaldo was still called a "one trick" pony and an over-rated player by most of the pundits/fans in his first three years.

Besides, only a moron would say that the likes Bebe and Smalling doesn't have that kind of potential. We haven't seen them enough to judge them while Hernandez has settled in quite brilliantly despite coming from a Mexican League.

Valencia- How many of Rooney's goals did he set up last season? He slotted in perfectly in his first season.

Hernandez- so far he's scored in the World Cup, Community Shield, CL and PL. Good start. Kid's got a bright future to him.

Obertan- From what I've heard, he always had the talent at Bordeaux, but his attitude let him down. SAF can rectify that.

Smalling- May turn out to be a fine defender. So far, in the matches he's played, he's looked assured and not gotten much wrong.

Bebe- Again, who knows. The greater the risk, the greater the reward and all that.

Didn't you hear a word Fergie said last night about potential and his own ability to spot potential?

It is probably true that not all of those players will become United greats and some might not even have a future at United but at this stage, we simply do not know.

Was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer "United quality"? Were you pissed off at the time that we had failed to get the big fish (Shearer) and ended up with this sprat from Norway?

If so, do you still hold the same opinion?

The fact of the matter is that a lot of what is happening at the moment is not too far removed from what has happened in the past but we just didn't buy some £30-40million player in the Summer and people are upset at that because that is the kind of thing we've always done... except it isn't.

i have said it before but i would be shocked if any of what the press has said is what rooney really believes. United lacking ambition? did you see SAF expression when that came up? this is a kid who is used to everyone giving into him because of his talents ont he football pitch. At least Ronaldo played out his skin even when the agreement to go to madrid was not finalized. I still think this has to do with the extra ciricullars off the pitch and that he wants out of england. I could be shocked and he goes to city or chelsea but in reality neither of them are really in Barca and soon Reals class. Chelsea is ageing and needs to get younger sooner rather then later and City just dont have the cache that other clubs do No history of winning anything and for many top footballers that still carrys some weight.

If City agree to a term that is so outrages like twice as much as mesi then the FA needs to start reigning in these contracts. FFS the English governent just laid off 500k jobs and this twat (if he is holding out for more money and really nothing else) is whining that he isnt on more then any other player in the world

If we've learnt anything over the past week, its that even though a good portion of the general media do not like United, they respect us and more specifically Sir Alex. Never in my life would I see some of the pundits backing Fergie like they have and effectively calling Wayne a fecking wanker.

Are you 24/7 on twitter mate :p

What is the most probable statement here?

1. He has signed and differences are sorted out?

2. He will be sold in Jan?

3. Nothing really. Focus on the match against Stoke etc.

1 or 2 seem most likely considering Ferguson said it would be sorted tomorrow last night. 2 more likely than 1.

I wouldn't read too much into it. The press love a panto villain! With the poor World Cup, Prostitute scandal and his statement about United, Wayne fits the bill.

Number 2. Still leaves questions as to what we're going to do with him till January so maybe something more definitive like "he'll never play for the club again."

He'll tell us Rooney's going in January and will never play for us again. That puts everything to bed then. We'll know he's off, it'll be a case of to who and for how much.

SSN expect it to say he has been transfer listed

Well, presumably that United have agreed to Rooney's request to be transfer listed.

Put him on the transfer list and you end up paying him for Unfair Dismissal, which hardly seems appropriate in this case!

I can’t see Rooney staying, if only because he will have made an enemy out of all his teammates with his remarks yesterday.

I think there will be more. Just saying "he's leaving in Jan" is nothing new. Everyone knows that. Maybe he'll announce that they've accepted an offer?

The media circus will not end till his next club is not decided.

Whats the chat in Manchester Ralphie, City?

While I obviously agree with that presumption, I don't know if Rooney has asked to be transfer listed. Perhaps he has stated that he is willing to see out his contract, or hasn't stated anything at all. Who takes the first step here?

the statement will say somting along the lines of 'talks were amicable' 'nothing decided on contract but they'll be no transfer before the summer' 'rooney has promised to give his all on the pitch and SAF will continue to consider him for selection' blah blah blah'

and he'll be off in January

Rooney probably won't request that though. Isn't it the case that you lose out on your 'loyalty bonus' (a big chunk of the transfer fee) if you request the transfer?

That won't really put the whole situation to bed though will it?

How ironic if he ends up getting a "loyalty bonus"

Wasn't aware we could accept offers outside of the transfer window.

id be surprised if the club stated anything definate regarding him leaving/never playing again as it considerably weakens any bargaining power they have. imo both parties will agree to drop this all from the public eye they'll tell everyone they've made friends and agreed to work hard on the pitch whilst all the while thrashing out the sale for January
