I don't know why nobody seems to be even entertaining this idea, Sir Alex is a P.R expert with years and years of experience after all. There's two sides to every story and my assumption would be that both sides are to blame in some way.

We don't know what the offer was and how much Rooney was wanting. We could have offered one hell of a payday, but he wanted some insane amount. Hard to say if 'we haven't done enough'.

Why not? We don't know his reasons for wanting to leave. Fergie said Rooney's agent said he wanted to leave in August, isn't that shortly before the NOTW broke the story about his private life?
