MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

Here's the disconnect.

If he leaves, we've got Berbatov who looks to have "arrived" as a United player now. Maybe he'll thrive on the top billing that he had at Spurs. We've also got Chicharito. Those two together intuitively feels like it would be a good partnership, given time. We've got Macheda and Welbeck in the mixer too. And you can bet your bottom dollar we'll be bringing in a versatile frontman to replace him...

If we can use City's interest to hike the price up, then we should also have money in the bank to finally solve the central midfield puzzle...

What a difference 2 years makes :(

  How great we could have been!!! Where did it all go wrong?

Sky Sports News claims that SAF has said.. "I was in the office on 14th August and David phoned me to say he wasn't signing a contract.

"I was dumbfounded. Only months before he was saying he was at the greatest club in the world.

"I asked to have a meeting with the boy. He reiterated what his agent said, that he wanted to go."

I suppose this would explain the way the season has gone for WAyne and the lack of game time, plus the up surge in Berbatov's play knowing he had to stand up to the plate and Chicarito being partenered with him so much!! At least it all fits together now!!

I just don't believe what's written in the papers and said in the press at the moment.

Look at the pictures of him in training, doesn't look like a player that wants to leave.

You do know there was a press conference earlier? At which Fergie explained that Wayne has told him he wants to leave.

Agreed. Bigger and better players have left in the past. The only concern I have is that if he is sold in January, we'll need immediate and significant investment, but will that happen whilst the fecking yanks own the club?

If they would want to make any profit, and keep this club successfull, they have to.

.We know what Wayne can do as a player, so are you personally disappointed at the moment? A. Yes, I'm disappointed, very disappointed, I can't believe it. When you manage Manchester United, there is always something you have to deal with. We've had to deal with these situations over the years. There is a disappointment a lot of the time when you have to deal with modern-day players. It's not as easy as it was many, many years ago when you were negotiating a contract because then the player had to depend and trust on the manager he worked for. And as a manager, you had more contact with the parents then as well. Yesterday I said to Edwin who made that mistake on Saturday, 'Well, how are you feeling?' He said the first phone call he'd received was from his father. I said, 'Well listen to him, he's the one you should listen to.' But that's gone now. We're dealing with agents who live in the pockets of players. We live in a different world now and we have to deal with it in a different way. It's a pity but it's there and we have to deal with it.

Perhaps I'm clinging to false hope, but a chance we're trying to force Rooneys hand?

Doesn't really sound like that at all.

fecking joke of a situation. If this is indicative of the way things are going to be under the Glazers, the next few years will see us sell all our stars, lose all our ambition and become a perennial mid-table club.

How the feck is this any of the Glazer's fault?

Rather we not play him, bad apple in the team could be a bad influence in the side. Important he stays fit so we can get as much money as we can for him.

Okay Jaap, we have some pictures of Rooney smiling in training, then a press conference from Fergie saying he is adamant to leave.....

Fergie said hard to match by most clubs. City isn't most clubs.

Of course. David’s prepared to offer the best terms possible for any player in the country. We realise and recognise the quality of the player, that’s why negotiations were started early summer, two years before his contract was up, to extend that contract. And also extend at the behest of the player itself. He said he wanted to stay for life. We were honouring that request from Wayne to stay at the club, at the club he loved. He said the best thing he’d ever done was to sign for Manchester United. So David was prepared, with the discussions with our owners, to offer Wayne the best contract that anyone could have in the country.

We would have bettered anything they currently pay

I'm having trouble getting my head around all this. Manchester United is supposed to be one of the peaks of the footballing world...you just don't decide to leave all of a sudden without a really good reason.

For some reason I'm not overly bothered, he's never been one of the players I've immensely liked despite all the great things he's done.

people should remember he can change his mind and the club have made that known. We just have to wait and see because ironically enough he's injured

At least Ronaldo was and still is classy..

Dont think many people would want him running around in the number 10 shirt if he can't be arsed. Explains why he's been so ordinary lately..

Just came back from training, needs to get his sleep in and conserve energy (according to him)

How much energy does a guy need to play a games console? (You can be sure he hasn't got a shite Wii).

I'm shocked to be honest.

It hasn't really sunk in yet.

When that is said, nobody knows Rooney's true reasons for doing this. If it's to escape the English media, I can kinda understand him He leaves under a pressure no one on here can even begin to imagine.

Just think it's a bit sad to see everybody get on his back immediately without knowing what the feck is going on. But that's football supporters to you I suppose...

Took the words right out of my mouth, although I was also going to make the point that Rooney's first touch is worse than Dirk Kuyt's.

 Have you just woken up?

Put sky sports news on or something? Or go on any football website..

Rooney will move either to Inter or Barcelona. Valdano has already come out saying there's no room for Wayne and I don't think he'll want to leave Manchester (and perhaps England) altogether.

had a meeting with the boy and he reiterated what his agent had said. He wanted to go. I said to him, 'Just remember one thing: respect this club.' I don't want any nonsense from you, respect your club. What we're seeing now in the media is disappointing because we've done everything we can for Wayne Rooney, since the minute he's come to the club. We've always been there as a harbour for him. Any time he's been in trouble, the advice we've given him – I've even been prepared to give him financial advice, many times. But you do that for your players, not just Wayne Rooney. That's Manchester United. This is a club which bases all its history and its tradition on the loyalty and trust between managers and players and the club. That goes back to the days of Sir Matt. That's what it's founded on. Wayne's been a beneficiary of this help, just as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and all the players have been. That's what we're there for.

There's been no falling out. That's why we need to clarify the situation now for our fans. Because what we saw on Saturday was unacceptable. When we were at 2-2 and the fans were chanting for Wayne Rooney, it put pressure on the players and it didn't do any good for the team. So we've got to clarify the situation and try to do it right. There's no [specific] offer on the table for Wayne [at the moment]

'Once a scouser always a scouser'.

That should be on a banner in the Stetford End

Why do we all think that kissing the badge really signifies anything? Cmon, these players are all in for the money and rarely give a shit about the club for any longer than the time during which they are successful and adored like fecking popstars.

I know. Which is why this strikes deeper, because the cnut went out of his way to con the fans. Like he did with Everton..."Once a blue"

Just be a fecking man and say you're a greedy bitch and want money. We'll hate you, but at least you'll be honest. Much respect to Ronaldo and even Tevez. Both wanted out, but they were men about it.

I hope not but the fact SAF has still played him after he knew all this in August would suggest he will pull on the jersey again.

I'd personally, let him rot and leave him out of shape for his new club.

Yeah, like we had money in the bank when we sold Ronaldo to solve the midfield puzzle ... right?

The Irony - of Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez, Tevez was the one who tried hardest to stay and who was then branded as a money grabbing whore.

For some reason I'm not overly bothered, he's never been one of the players I've immensely liked despite all the great things he's done.

Same, he's never been my favorite, but I always appreciated what he brought to the club. The shock for me is the way in which he's leaving.

How could Rio have only found out via Sky? Surely he must've known.

Apparently he said he wanted out in August. Presumably United asked him not to say anything publically.

It's pretty obvious he expected big signings in the transfer window. That didn't happen so he reversed his decision to sign a new contract. Do I blame him, yes to a degree but is the current squad going to win anything major without huge investment (which we don't have), no. Comes down to his ambition to win trophies, same reason he left everton.

I hope I'm wrong but maybe there is some irony in once a blue always a blue...

I await the away fans signing about Wayne.........all I know is where he goes and we play against him, it will be electric.

Rio on twitter saying he didn't know about it till he saw it on the news.. how does that work?

Do you come from fecking Mars?

City are giving YaYa Toure something like 187k a week, soon to be over 200k due to tax rules.

Jesus...why are you refusing to accept the reality of this?

Pull your fecking head in Jason. We're not that skint. We'll match any offer and club can give him. Thats whats weird about the whole thing. Rooney could name his price.

I rated him as our main player, liked him more then any current United player (apart from Giggs and Scholes, they are in their own 'league') and never though he would leave United. But now don't feel neither angry or sick or whatever,it's his loss not Uniteds. Club wasn't founded the day he was born, neither will extinct the day he leaves. To think he turned down offer for a new contract and played all the 'I wasn't injured' saga as Fergies fault is unacceptable and shows his lack of respect for both club and manager.

Is Rooney cup tied in the CL?

Am I correct in saying he can still play for another team in the second stage of the CL
