MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

DiscoMirror #MUFC Fergie: "Wayne had second thoughts. I admire
him for saying sorry to me and the players. This is a big day for Man Utd."

Agreed.

Each to their own, but I can't understand how some people performed a U-Turn - from criticizing him yesterday (and rightly so!) to praising him like he's Jesus. This is the guy who treated the club like shit, why would I approve of that? As far as I am concerned he can leave today. Football is more than just trophies or good spots in the table. I'd rather have some loyal servants like O'Shea and Fletcher in the team who adore the club and know what it is about than some ungrateful spoilt child like Wayne Rooney, even if it meant missing out on a good league spot.

100% in agreement but the trouble is that like it or not Wayne Rooney is representative of a huge percentage of our support.

You think he would have left Everton to join us if we were still floundering in mid table like we were in the 80's?

With players like him, comes along a whole generation of spoilt fans who demand nothing less than 1st place, season after season. That's the real price of success.

The people saying everyone is just accepting him with open arms are fecking idiots and are choosing to ignore the many, many posts that state the exact opposite. Cynical pricks.

Exactly what I was thinking. Most people still think he's a tool.

Terry, Cole or no other player in the Chelsea squad has ever pulled a stunt like this - Drogba likes to moan but is a decent individual off the pitch. When has John Terry ever disrespected Chelsea fans in such a manner, or moaned at England supporters?

Well, some people are full of shit and hypocrites on top of that. Nobody who praises Wayne Rooney has the right to judge Terry, Cole, Drogba or even Tevez. Rooney made them look like saints and instead of showing some dignity some fans are already hailing him like he's Jesus. Which is like a slap in the face of players like Fletcher or O'Shea, who never throw tantrums, are loyal, love the club and are respectful to the fans.

Quoted for efffect. Brilliant, just brilliant.

People need to stop with the whole "double his wages" thing from this, if anything he only(lol I hate saying that in this sense) got a bump of about 20k from the initial offer in August.

And this City deal "being done" shit is very interesting, if that ever ends up being remotely confirmed, and he did a u-turn on what they would of offered, anything from 240k-300k before image rights, he deserves some credit, even if it's very very little, but to take 60k less to stay here is loyalty..........isn't it? It took making Gerrard the highest paid player in England to keep him, then it was the same deal with Lampard..Rooney is what, like 3rd highest paid in Manchester from this? -_-
It would be quite humorous if City came out saying they were upset because they had agreed a deal with Rooney. They'd be outing themselves for tapping up. Don't think it'll happen, but would be funny.

apparently the balaclava wankers from last night have been on the radio claiming he's staying because of them :lol::lol:

fecking hell. Utter retards.

A-fecking-men

THe best post in the whole thread.

Have to agree with both of you. He's trashed the club and disrespected it completely. And from all accounts it seems as though we've 'convinced' him into staying, which is strange, given that he's the one who was out of line. If anyone should have needed to crawl back and plead, it's him.

And I hope this talk of 180K isn't true. He's performing pathetically, he shouldn't rewarded in such a manner for letting his team down on and off the pitch. This really is an odd conclusion to this bizarre saga.

Rooney has apologised after ending a turbulent few days by agreeing a five-year contract with Manchester United.

The announcement was made by the Old Trafford club this lunchtime, ending one of the most amazing weeks in their history, which started with hints at unrest and included Rooney's own concerns about the direction United were heading in.

"Wayne has apologised to me and the players," Ferguson told Key103.

"He will also do so with the supporters."

The statement came at the end of a staggering 24-hour period, which involved meetings between Ferguson, chief executive David Gill, Rooney and his trusted advisor Paul Stretford, plus the Glazer family.

Irate supporters gathered at Rooney's house in Prestbury last night to express their concern, only to discover the 24-year-old is now set to stay at Old Trafford.

"Sometimes, when you're in a club, it can be hard to realise just how big it is and it takes something like the events of the last few days to make you understand," said Sir Ferguson.

"I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is."

It barely seemed credible such a position could be arrived at so quickly.

But the conciliatory nature of a holding statement from United last night suggested rapprochement was in the offing.

And, after consultation with the owners, who allayed his fears about the future direction of United, Rooney agreed to extend his contract, which will now expire in 2015.

"It's been a difficult week, but the intensity of the coverage is what we expect at Manchester United," said Ferguson.

"I said to the boy that the door is always open and I am delighted Wayne has agreed to stay.

"I am pleased he has accepted the challenge to guide the younger players and establish himself as one of United's great players.

"It shows character and belief in what we stand for.

"I am sure everyone involved with the club will now get behind Wayne and show him the support he needs to produce the performances we know he is capable of."

Rooney recognises damage has been done, possibly inside the dressing room and certainly with the fans who have regarded him as one of their own since he first arrived from Everton in 2004.

He also understands the need to improve his form, which has suffered so badly since he sustained an ankle injury against Bayern Munich in March, the last time he scored a goal for his club in open play.

"I am delighted to sign another deal at United," he said.

"In the last couple of days, I have talked to the manager and the owners and they have convinced me this is where I belong.

"I said on Wednesday the manager is a genius and it is his belief and support that have convinced me to stay.

"I am signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history - which is the reason I joined the club in the first place.

"I am sure the fans over the last week have felt let down by what they have read and seen.

"But my position was from concern over the future.

"The fans have been brilliant with me since I arrived and it's up to me through my performances to win them over again."

So much for "trust in Sir Alex"

Why won't any of you learn, wait and see what happens.

A lot of the people here continuing slagging him off without keeping an open mind are just stubborn as you now look rather foolish.

Rooney has hurt EVERY United fan. He has to win us ALL over.

Lets see how it pans out and the ins and outs of this new contract before we start deciding things eh...

I can see your point but in reality all the interview is going to be is a load of cliches, I swear if he says he loves the club Ill fecking scream.

Fergie: "The job now is to get Wayne fit and back to playing the way we know he can. Everyone is on board now, no-one's jumping ship."

Terry, Cole or no other player in the Chelsea squad has ever pulled a stunt like this - Drogba likes to moan but is a decent individual off the pitch. When has John Terry ever disrespected Chelsea fans in such a manner, or moaned at England supporters?

Drogba uttered plenty of times that he wanted to leave Chelsea for a "big club" in Italy or Spain... But everyone has forgotten that... And even though Ashley Cole has not done shit like that at Chelsea, we all know what he did at Arsenal. This is not a one of a kind scenario.

I really could not give a feck, I think the media has blown this out of proportions. Wayne Rooney wanted reassurance that Manchester United were going to be among the top clubs in the world in the future, and I guess Ferguson/Gill/Glazers gave him that. That is reassuring to me as well. :)

As far as I am concerned, all Rooney did was not sign a contract at a given time... English press are cnuts.

I'm willing to bet SAF has had to have a long conversation with Rooney about his personal life too. There is no way this whole episode was just about money. The lads head doesn't seem right from what we've been seeing and hearing...

One of the upsides from this is that the scouser in my office is practically crying through outright bitterness and not having the 'you're best player walked away' stick to beat us with any more.

hehe.

Granted they havent disrespected the club, and to be fair I actually quite like Drogba on and off the pitch, but to deny that Terry is a complete cnut of the highest order is ridiculous

I'd didn't deny it, I said that Terry has never disrepected Chelsea fans and has never done anything like this.

The only example I can think of like this is the Gerrard off/on/off move to Chelsea in 2005.

For those of you accusing people of making u-turns, someone said you should name and shame. YOu really should you know because most of you levelling this accusation are doing it without any proof having decided to blur 100 posters into 1 to substantiate your accusation. For my money, there are two camps:

1 - those that decided he could go

2 - those that cried that he was going

Group 1 is today the unhappy group, feeling like they have been made a mug of by Rooney and his agent.

Group 2 is the euphoric group who don't have any prinicples.

Sorry I don't think the mere belief that Rooney could go, or the anger and resentment shows anything in the way of principle ... belonging to Group 1 myself, it was no skin off my back if he left though admitably if Rooney has made a mug of me, I would say to him that it's him that has lost face about this incident ... he needs to persuade a heck of a lot of co-workers to forgive and forget the incident.

I'm fairly sure a lot of what he meant by lack of ambition was just red mist.

In comparison to real principles I consider it a drop in the water ... real principles really do have to be adamant!

I love how people seem to be implying that Mourinho had some kind of inside knowledge/influence on all this, I can just picture the scene now, Rooney's bedroom, October 21st, 2:46am....

Rooney: zzzzzzzzzzzzz
Jose: *whispering* Wayne, Wayne
Rooney: zzzzzzzzzzzz
Jose: Wayne
Rooney: *half asleep* who is it?
Jose: It's me, the special one
Rooney: Jenny, go away I've not got me wallet on me la
Jose: No it is I Jose Mourinho
Rooney: Oh eh, what you doing 'ere la?
Jose: I've come to tell you you need to stay at Man United
Rooney: Why la? City have offered me 500k a week and a scaletrix set and United have Darron Gibson
Jose: But I'm coming Wayne, and i'm bringing Wesley
Rooney: Oh alright then, pass me my fred the red teddy on your way out please Josie
Jose: it's Jose
Rooney: right Josie zzzzzzzzzzzzz

"I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is."

Think the 180k a week helped.

I can see your point but in reality all the interview is going to be is a load of cliches, I swear if he says he loves the club Ill fecking scream.

I am not going to keep arguing with you all. The quote you posted puts an end to my thoughts on the matter at this moment in time. I am not trying to prove anything, just giving my opinion. Lance and Dan feel idiots and rightly so. They have been transformed into the press' bitches over the last few days.

As long as he plays his heart out, I couldn't give a feck, I'll support him.

Some of you lot in the thread are well weird.
Same here, and I have no doubt he will give everything as Rooney always have done for Manchester United.

Everyone who are thinking of booing him next time at OT are idiots.

Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or off of one season as did Messi, so if I can't use his best season how can I accurately portray how good Rooney actually is? I know he's been a twat, but don't be a jilted lover over this. Rooney is a top class footballer and anyone who thinks otherwise are delusional over the situation.

Wasn't so long ago Rooney was in the running for the prestigious individual awards, alas an injury at Bayern Munich occurred, remember?

I don't remember Drogba, Villa or Xavi being as good as Rooney at 24. Rooney at 28 will be superior to any of them. Also, while they all individually excel at one or two things (at their respective ages) Rooney has everything in his locker, including Xavi-esque passing and creativity.
Rooney was never realistically running for these awards knowing only a world cup winner would be crowned.Only people cut from the real world thought so.

If you want forget the seasons in which Ronaldo and Messi won their respective awards, they still showed they had more than one good season in them. They never go through these long goal droughts after an injury, suspension or whatever.

You're a bit stupid to think that just because Rooney is 24 and at his current level that at 28 he can only improve and become better.Footballers peak differently and we're not psychics to predict the future. We can only debate for certainty about the current real facts. The facts tell you that Rooney is not even close to be among the top 6-7 in the world.

I still think he's a fat, ugly, spoilt, cheating cnut.

But he's our fat, ugly, spoilt, cheating cnut (for now).

I'm meh about it all to be honest.

£180,000 is quite frankly a joke. And if it's true the club has been held to ransom and has caved in. It was always about the $$$$$.

I'm disgusted.

We don't know wage amount or the circumstances though Sam. This could be a deal all down to money, extend Rooneys contract to ensure the club get a real price for Rooney come the summer. Not the bullshit 20m being thrown about in the papers.

He's a cnut in my book. What it does do however is give all the players a big lift for the weekend. Perhaps this is what was required to get our season moving?

I have a feeling the assurances Rooney was seeking is that Sir Alex would be there through the length of his next contract. I believe David Gill could not give him such an assurance, so Rooney wouldn't sign the new contract.
What could have happened now is that Sir Alex has told him that he will be there for atleast another couple of years, and Rooney is given an escape clause to leave once he retires, that way both win as United will sitll be able to command a large fee for him as he will sitll be under contract for another 3 years.

Any thoughts?

I'd didn't deny it, I said that Terry has never disrepected Chelsea fans and has never done anything like this.

The only example I can think of like this is the Gerrard off/on/off move to Chelsea in 2005.

Terry flirting with a move to City (admittedly nowhere near as publicly) wasn't disrespecting the club?

"I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is."

Think the 180k a week helped.

So we werent a great club before ?

A classic case of shut your fecking mouth before you dig a bigger hole

 at the past 5 days. It's bollocks...he's leaving...he's a cnut...we're shit...he's signed a new contract.

He's a huge cnut for pulling this stunt but I'm pleased for the team's sake that this has been put to bed. He's now got to perform at his best and grovel and work hard, it's his penance.

The only other person I believe to have ever got a repreive from Ferguson has been Peter Schmeichel ... this is last warning stuff.

I am not going to keep arguing with you all. The quote you posted puts an end to my thoughts on the matter at this moment in time. I am not trying to prove anything, just giving my opinion. Lance and Dan feel idiots and rightly so. They have been transformed into the press' bitches over the last few days.

Fair enough, been fun arguing with you :)

Rooney: "I spoke with SAF, Gill and the Glazers and they confirmed this club will continue to be successful."

So he even spoke to the Glazers?!

Have they promised him Sneijder?
