Even If we only talking about the recent month, he already scored an injury time winner for us against Villarreal, scored last min equalizer and injury time winner for Portugal against Ireland, then in his last game for Juventus, had a last minute winner denied as marginally offside from VAR.

Ronaldo is certainly off to a good start. At least in terms of goals. I don't quite remember this back and forth going on when they were both in their prime though, at least not that one was better than the other everytime one of them scored a goal. Ronaldo is definitely going to keep going untill he's 40 though I think.
Messi is a GOAT too and you all can keep supporting and praising who you want but there's no way in hell I'll let your opinions change what I so strongly believe in. If a player is playing for MY team and scoring goals that are of utmost importance, he'll always be the GOAT and a United legend in my books. I don't give a flying feck who Messi scores for or against. He's not playing for United. I don't care if he's hiding if he's not hiding, if he scores when it's needed or when it's not. I'll keep rating the big guy, who scored when it's needed for United to give us an important win, over him any day.

I mean is this even a question? I don’t believe in simply the greatest of all time due too many factors but if we’re talking about this generation it’s obviously Messi. One of the biggest reason Ronaldo is in this convo is because he’s played for multiple big clubs so there fanbase are going to back there boy. Ronaldo is one of the best of this generation and all time and by far the greatest goal scorer of all time but Messi edges him as the best of this generation without a doubt.

All the stats I’m stating are facts.
The biggest competition in the world is the UEFA Champions league which he is the undisputed best at.
National team competitions aren’t what they used to be and even then he has won a Euro which is the second biggest international competition.
Based on Portugals history then winning a World Cup would be like Leicester winning the EPL slim to none chances.
Portugal barely qualified for international competitions before Ronaldo and never won a major trophy but that changed once Ronaldo stepped into the mold.
Watching Barca this season has made me think Messi getting the most MOTM in all top leagues, most goals and assists in La Liga last season is one of his biggest achievements. That Barca team is garbage

To be fair since 2014 you could see the dominance start to shift and since 2016 Ronaldo has been the best player of the two.
Well Messi being better is debatable. But he is declining faster. It doesn't necessarily mean he's worse, it might just mean his peak was higher. Or we've all come to expect so much from him/ he's set the bar so high. Ronaldo is closer to where he was at his peak, thanks to his excellent fitness management that's also true
Yeah this is spot on. The problem for both before this year is Ronaldo/Messi played for the worst Juve and Barca teams in years when both are in decline and need better teams around them.
Both are still the best but neither are good enough to carry teams

I think this is the difference between now and their primes.
In their primes they alone could almost propel their team to a win every game. At this stage in their career they need some help now but if put in the position it’s still Ronaldo and Messi above every player in the world today.
Imagine Ronaldo in Bayern. Superior finisher and player so imagine the goals he would score in that well oiled machine.
2016 was the start of the 3 peat and when he won euro and began to pull away so I think that’s a fair start date.
Maybe its an unpopular opinion, but i think Ronaldo was closer to Messi when he was in his prime than he is now.
Ronaldo had more variety to his game than now, he was a monster at the counter attack, a big threat in the box(still is), and he also had a wicked long shot, there was no "setting up" against him, you just had to prey he had a bad day.
Now? Of course he it still as difficult to contain in the box as anyone, world class at that, but he doesnt have as many strings to play on anymore, so its easier to neutralize him imo.
Yeah they are still above but are only a hair above the rest of the best players in the world.
It really does show how incredible they were at there peak when they still are considered the best at 34 and 36. They made 60+ goals a season seem normal for multiple years
You say that but 2014/15 Messi is the greatest player of all time IMO and 2018/19 Messi was streets ahead of everyone including Ronaldo. Ronaldo has certainly had better seasons than Messi but he hasn't clearly set himself apart from Messi even in his dominant 3 peat years. Messi on a few occassions has been in a league of his own.
And then 2019 to the present Messi is better
I think post 2015 overall it’s slightly Ronaldo but I agree that Messi overall is better now due to his creativity and overall game.
Ronaldo will probably score more as he is mostly just a goalscorer now but I feel Messi offers more
It’s a debate for sure, Ronaldo was still winning trophies and performing in a very mediocre side. His first 2 years in Juve I would still edge Ronaldo but this past season I agree I believe Messi was better
Not really sure I agree with Messi declining faster. Messi won his last Ballon D'or at 32 years old, and has been playing in a medicore Barcelona side untill recently while being la liga topscorer every year and breaking the La liga assist record for a single season. Was player of the tournament at the Copa. We don't know how this season will pan out for Messi or Ronaldo yet, despite Ronaldo starting strongly, but I'll still maintain that more presurre is put on Messi to be more than a goalscorer. Ronaldo became a poacher by the time he was 30 (perhaps the best in the world) while there is massive creative burden on Messi to a playmaker and goalscorer. And of course to be a great dribbler. As long as Ronaldo gets his goal, he's done his job, but Messi is expected to do more than just score goals(even though goals is what he'll be jugded on by caflike online fans).

The World Cup is the biggest tournament in football. Always has been, always will be, no matter how much you may cry about the Champions League. Mainly football fans watch the CL. EVERYONE watches the World Cup, even people that have no interest in football. Even Americans watch it FFS. It’s the biggest stage in the sport by far and the most coveted prize. There’s a reason why the trophy is gold and all the other major ones are mostly silver. These things matter.
Some argue that you cannot be the GOAT of this sport without winning the World Cup. I’m not sure if that’s true but you’ve certainly got to at least make some kind of mark in it, like a Cruyff did or a Puskas did.
And on the biggest stage, his record is distinctly average. 7 goals in 17 games and 0 G/A in the KO rounds. Far from the ‘mentality monster’ picture that you are trying to paint. These are the facts. To quote a moronic short American, ‘facts don’t care about your feelings.’

If you argument between the two is national team then you just lost the argument because Ronaldo has a superior Record for his national team then Messi does for his. Not to mention Ronaldo has this while having played for a dar inferior national team for a majority of his career.
Since were on facts don’t care about your feelings Ronaldo has 2 trophies to Messi won granted I don’t usually count the second because they Euro is a far greater achievement then the Copa based on the fact either Brazil or Argentina make them final in almost every iteration.
So Ronaldo has Two major international trophies and is the all time scorer for national teams (and in general) as well as having better and more historic national team performances then Messi has for Argentina.
World Cup had a lot more prestige in the 50s, 60s, 70s etc. It doesn't hold that type of sway anymore. Generally, the standard of football is poorer, and luck plays a much bigger part.
The Champions League and domestic league competitiveness is a better indication these days.
I'm not discounting the influence of the World Cup, just that it doesn't hold the same prestige it once did.
Any player in the world would choose a World Cup over a CL though.
I never actually said anything about Messi. I was talking about the World Cup in response to crazed comments about Ronaldo ‘having the best mentality of anyone who’s ever played professional sport’ (and other such heady statements) because he scored a goal in a CL group game.
Ronaldo has mostly been poor on the biggest stage. It’s a blot on his record, no matter how hard you try to wish it away. Messi has been better (golden ball, final etc.), but he has not produced his absolute best at the World Cup either so the same argument can be levelled at him to some degree. Got to the final, fell short.
The GOAT candidates that it cannot be levelled at are Pele and Maradona. They brought their best stuff to the biggest stage, when the pressure was at its greatest, their nations were relying on them and the whole world was watching. The World Cup final is the most watched event not just in football but sport. It’s bigger than the Olympics, bigger than the Super Bowl, bigger than everything.
Except the talent is not evenly dispersed and it’s a lottery. Not many strong nations like in the past.
