Minute by Minute: Villarreal CF vs. Manchester United

Pires wins the corner off Carrick.

Rossi nearly got a touch.

Carzola with a cross down the right but it eludes both Rossi and Capdevila.

Rooney somehow finds himself clear in the box from a long ball from Carrick. But his his snap shot is saved smartly by the keeper.

Terrific ball from Carrick and great movement by Rooney.

Rooney gets in behind with some great movement and Rooney gets a good shot in.

Diego Lopez showing how good a keeper he is with another good save.
 
Nice interplay by United switching flanks. Rooeny is drifting out wide finds O'Shea but the Irishman's pass is too strong for Fletcher and it goes straight to the keeper.
 
Poor game overall up until now.

Very few chances for either side.

A flash of brilliance from either side could reinvigorate this match.
 
Great tackle from O'Shea on Rossi cuts off a very threatening counter-attack for Villareal.

United try to counter by Anderson's final ball to Ronaldo is too strong.
 
The games starting to open up with some probing passes from United and some very swift counter-attacking from Villareal.
 
Tevez looks set to come on. Possibly Nani will be taken off, he has been rather ineffective at times this half.

Nani runs at the defence and picks out Rooney's brilliant run.

Rooney has been superb with his movement as Nani finds him running into the box. However his cross for Anderson goes into Lopez's arms.
 
Some very tidy play from Villareal nearly leads to a chance for Fernandez. Ferdinand clears.

Both teams again sloppy in posession with both teams starting to push a bit more.

Rooney with a nice piece of skill works an opening and his cross is deflectd and then headed just over the bar.

Carrick with a great tackle on Fernandez. Anderson finds Rooney who runs at the Villareal defence. He crosses but the fullback tips it over the bar after a deflection.

Again some edgy defending from Rio and TK eventually clears.

This game could go either way, or it could end up a draw.

Capdevila sent off for a high tackle on Ronaldo. Too much rolling around from Ronaldo for me.
 
Ronaldo swans past one player and then is scythed down by Capedevila who is sent off.

Straight red as Ronaldo lies in agony.

Harsh on Capedevila, probably should have been just a yellow. Ronaldo is taking this a bit too far.
 
Least this game has a bit of bite in it. Park looks about to come on and he does for Nani who has had a poor game.

Good performance by United, solid performance by Villareal.

United didn't create enough clear cut chances and so really Villareal deserved a draw.

No doub United were the team on top for most of the match though.
 
Both Villareal and United qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.
